BMW and Porsche are working on a 3 minute EV charger.

German sports car makers seek electric charging that's as quick as a petrol fill.

BMW AG and Porsche unveiled a charging station that can jolt electric vehicles with enough power to drive 100 kilometers (62 miles) in less than three minutes, pushing ahead of Tesla Inc. in the race to make battery-powered cars more convenient.

The ultra-fast prototype charger has capacity of 450 kilowatts, more than triple Tesla’s Superchargers. Test vehicles developed to take that much power were recharged to 80 percent capacity in 15 minutes. Tesla’s stations need about 30 minutes for a similar charge, according to its website.

The super-powered charging point was developed by a consortium comprising the two German car brands, engineering giant Siemens AG and charging specialists Allego GmbH and Phoenix Contact E-Mobility GmbH, the station in Bavaria was opened to the public on Wednesday. It’s free to use for existing models, BMW said Thursday in a statement.

There’s a Siemens energy supply system that can handle up to 920 volts (what researchers reckon future EVs will have), and cooled high power charging cables from Pheonix. That, and a no doubt brain-meltingly complicated system that integrates high-power electronics and vehicle communication. Which basically means any type of EV can use the same charger.

3 minute charging will be a real desirable feature and brings the recharging duration at par with refueling!

By the way who is Tesla partnering with?

That's incredible. I'm pretty sure I spend more than 5 minutes on a fill-up + checking engine oil (not required in an EV). A 100 km jump is more than enough.

They will eventually. Tesla had a first-mover advantage and made the most of it, but the big guys have R&D budgets that are 10 times greater than Tesla's.

Why do I feel that Tesla already has this tech and they will simply unlock/OTA it at opportune time?

In scientific magazines, there are numerous lab developments that are being published. Some have breakthrough in using metal-oxide, some have a few minutes of charging. All of these have an auto company sponsoring the research.
Hopefully, in the next 2 or 3 years, there will be something cheaper, denser and faster charging that we can all use.
