This is the main primary reason why the electric F150 is affordable I think. Ford can afford to sell the F150 at a lower price or even at a loss given just how popular at this and then perhaps hope that the volumes brings down the cost of producing the vehicle further. Even with the small margins, this thing will sell, hence bringing profits for Ford even in the short-term!

Also, what the F150 will do is bring the concept of the electric vehicle to rural America and places which are somewhat conservative and suspicious of electric cars. People will buy the F150 not because it’s green but because of its utility. Just like the F150 hybrid, Ford has been smart in highlighting its utility and how it can used as one giant battery such as during the blackout recently in Texas where Ford dealerships dispatched their hybrid F150s to light houses. Also, it accelerates faster than a Raptor!

As it turns out Tesla wasn’t the answer to bring electric motoring to the masses in America (though it was the case in Europe), it was the 100 year old Ford!

Re: Ford to make all-electric F150

Ford says it got 20,000 F-150 Lightning reservations after big reveal in just 12 hours.

Detroitnews

Quote:
In the hours after Ford Motor Co. revealed the electric version of its best-selling pickup truck Wednesday night to much fanfare, the Dearborn automaker clocked some 20,000 reservations for the F-150 Lightning.
Ford sells around 80,000 F150 units per month.

Ford looks to be on the right track with some massively impressive marquee products. Prior to the unveil even the President (a complete car guy) was there for a preview of the next generation of America’s bestselling vehicle.

Re: Ford to make all-electric F150

Starting at $40k i.e. Rs.30 lakhs in US. If they launch it here, do not use the high tax CBU type routes (presumably doable), maybe detune a bit i.e. reduce top speed to get more range if possible, and it comes 'on road' for say 50 lakhs, it could probably get good traction. They may not have to 'exit' the market after all!!!

There is some 2500 units allowance also to import without heavy taxation right?

I'm assuming a lot of people who own Fortuners/Endeavours/Land Cruisers/Range Rovers can afford and do have more than 1 vehicle.

Might I add the free publicity for what already seems to be a product destined for product success (fingers crossed)!

Re: Ford to make all-electric F150

A recent thread talked about EV v. IC engine car pricing. Ford just priced a mainstream EV at par with its IC engine counterpart! Lower, if tax credits are included!

With upcoming improvements in battery technology, cheaper pricing could be a reality much earlier than most people would imagine.

Re: Ford to make all-electric F150

Ford seems to have done the impossible with this, and hence putting a direct question mark on the logic of 'exorbitant price of batteries'!

I have never seen the

S U C C E S S

written as big, throughout the world; in the auto industry.

Elon must be thinking for sure that a serious blow has been delivered, particularly when it's an actual truck on offer instead of an obtuse angled isosceles triangle with wheels!

Seems like an idea of the marketing team. No wonder, the President of United States is not allowed to drive, but they can simply call out the script provided by the marketing team to reveal the 0-60 figures. No auto pilot, this truck seems to get the dual driver mode, the biggest launch of the year came coupled with probably the biggest goof up too, had they kept the cameras 6 inches lower, and it was all good

Re: Ford to make all-electric F150

Given the huge number of trucks sold in the US, this vehicle might single handedly make a huge impact reducing emissions. It is also a nice experiment for outsiders to see how the potential sudden increase in power load is handled by the grid.

We’ll be lucky if they launch the smaller Ranger in India. The F150 is too big for our roads and garages.

US Presidents are not allowed to drive on public roads. This does not seem to be one. Also, this rule is not a law.

A lot of technical specifications, but no mention of vehicle weight. Or did I miss it?

I don’t think they want to hide. The second driver was always there and you can see the steering otherwise too. Am sure everyone who were there, can notice.

Everyone knows this President is a Car guy, so whosoever convinced President to agree for this, deserves a credit. Good job

Re: Ford to make all-electric F150

This is a masterstroke from Ford. They went and electrified the best selling car in their stable and priced it at par with the ICE counterpart. Talk about strategy!!!
I see SUCCESS written all over this even if Ford is able to convert even 20% of their regular F150 customers into this.

.
I too think this is the key..pricing on par with the ICE couterpart. Imagine, even in India, if the Nexon EV is priced at the same price as the ICE models?Or Hyundai Kona priced at Creta levels?
This looks like a turning point in the evolution of the EVs, not just in US but the world over.

The two main barriers to EV entry are the initial purchase cost and the charging times. Looks like Ford as blown open the first barrier with this.

Ford received almost 45,000 F-150 Lightning pre-orders in under 48 hours.
