Rumour: Mercedes evaluating EQC electric SUV for India

Mod Note: Our Mercedes EQC Review has been taken live at this link. Please continue the discussion over on the new thread. Thanks!

According to a media report, Mercedes-Benz is considering the EQC electric SUV for India. If the plan goes through, the EQC could be launched by end-2019. It is likely to be imported as a completely built unit (CBU).

Rumour: Mercedes evaluating EQC electric SUV for India-eqc.jpg

The EQC made its public debut at the Paris Motor Show in September 2018. It is a 5-door electric SUV that is based on a modified version of the GLC's platform. It measures 4,761 mm in length, 1,884 mm in width, 1,624 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,873 mm.

The EQC is powered by two electric motors placed on each axle. Together, they deliver a combined output of 402 BHP and 765 Nm of torque. It comes with a 80 kWh lithium-ion battery that is claimed to offer a range of 450 km (NEDC cycle). Mercedes-Benz claims that the EQC will accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 5.1 seconds and has a top speed of 180 km/h.

In the international market, the Mercedes-Benz EQC will compete with the Jaguar I-Pace and Audi e-tron.

Mercedes Benz looking at local assembly of its all-electric EQC in India

Quote:

One of the main reasons for this is the reduction in import duties on the components for electric vehicles brought in as a completely knocked-down unit (CKD) or semi-knocked down (SKD). These range from between 15 to 30 percent for CKDs to between 10 and 15 percent for SKDs.

What also helps is that Merc’s all-electric series production car is built on the same platform and production line as the Mercedes-Benz GLC – an SUV the carmaker already assembles here. So, adapting the EQC for local assembly could technically be feasible without too much investment.

The big question here is how much will local assembly affect the price of Merc’s first all-electric? In international markets, the EQC will go on sale later this year and is expected to be priced starting at around £67,500 (Rs 62 lakh).

Re: Rumour: Mercedes evaluating EQC electric SUV for India

This is just PR from Mercedes. They have the pushed the launch in the main market - US - to 2021, but are talking of launching it here in a few months!
They are facing significant production related problems as per media reports - selling a paltry 55 units till date in Germany. Infact, some are already calling it a flop.

I've been in the car. It was a part of the Laver Cup event in Geneva in September. It's not a special car, and it does not look very attractive. I saw the car for the first time and I didn't even want to click pictures.
I still took 2.

The I-Pace on the other hand is a head turner. The GLC looks great too. This one just.. doesn't work. It does not come across as a serious attempt from Mercedes.

I commend Mercedes Benz globally and in India to take a bold decision to launch this in India at this time within such a short interval. This is the kind of leadership required from a mature sensible automaker. Now just hoping they price it sensibly too. I am personally hoping the price doesn't exceed 60-65 lacs. Let's see, I'm reading a crore but crore is not worth for a car based on the GLC. Fingers crossed.

According to a media report, Mercedes has pushed the launch of the EQC electric SUV in India to the second half of 2020. The car was initially scheduled to be launched this month.

Rumour: Mercedes evaluating EQC electric SUV for India-eqc.jpg

The EQC was also part of Mercedes' 2020 Auto Expo line up. It is based on a modified GLC platform and offers seating for 5 people.

The EQC features a gloss black grille with wraparound headlights and a strip of LED daytime running lights that stretches across the front of the car on the upper edge of the grille. At the rear, the car has wraparound LED tail lights with an LED light bar in the centre.

On the inside, the EQC gets a freestanding digital display for the instrument cluster and an MBUX infotainment system. It has a 3-spoke multi-function steering wheel.

The EQC is powered by two electric motors placed on each axle. Together, they deliver a combined output of 402 BHP and 760 Nm of torque. It comes with a 80 kWh lithium-ion battery that is claimed to offer a range of 445-471 km (NEDC cycle). Mercedes-Benz claims that the EQC will accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 5.1 seconds and touch a top speed of 180 km/h.

Autocar has estimated price at launch to be 1.5 cr. In my opinion that is being dead on arrival. No point in launching it even as a halo product, as it is not an S class or an S class replacement. With that logic the EQS will launch at 3 cr. Ridiculous. Let's hope before launch they fix their "GLC EV" price to a more GLC - esque pricing.

At that price, they shouldn't even bother getting it over. Not even one will sell. Also this car doesn't have great reviews in the EU. It has a whole load of issues and very poor range.

One sales executive from Mercedes has confirmed that the price is going to be approximately 1.65cr on road. That is just far too expensive!

It might have a market in India given the people who will be able to afford it will have a proper parking place and therefore could install a charging plug if they wanted to.

Re: Rumour: Mercedes evaluating EQC electric SUV for India

Saw a couple of EQC 400s this morning right outside the Mercedes Benz Global Star dealership in Green Park, New Delhi. One of these cars had the Edition 1886 badging.

I was really getting late for work so just clicked a few pictures of both the cars in a haste, but failed to get an idea on the pricing.

The launch seems around the corner now !
