Delhi setting up more EV charging stations

According to a media report, state-run Energy Efficiency Services (EESL) plans to set up 84 fast-charging stations for electric vehicles (EVs) in Delhi by end of March 2019. These fast-charging stations will be set up at public parking spaces and high-visibility areas including Khan Market, Yashwant Place and other locations in the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) area.

Users will be able to book a slot and charge their vehicles using the ElectriFi smartphone app. A top-up of fifteen minutes is expected to be enough for a range of 22 km and is expected to cost around Rs. 30. A full charge is expected to take 90 minutes.

Initially, the government plans to set up 15 kW Bharat DC-001 chargers that are compatible with Tata and Mahindra EVs as well as electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers. Later, these are expected to be updated to European CCS and Japan's CHAdeMO standards.

Re: Delhi to get 84 fast-charging EV stations by March 2019

The optimists will say that is a great beginning and a step in the right direction. The cynics will say such a small number is not enough for Delhi by a factor of 30X. Both are right. But it is a sign of the times. EVs and Plug-In Hybrids are coming and they will put their stamp faster than we think. Electric vehicles, smaller vehicles, electric scooters, battery assisted bicycles and public transport is the way of the future. I am an optimist to my button holes.

A good strategy to set-up at posh locations (or high-visibility locations) in Delhi, in order to spread the EV revolution.
Just like the Toyota "started" the hybrid revolution by marketing the Prius to the uber-rich (due to the fact that they could afford it), this strategy could be a good impetus for manufacturers to bring in their global vehicles.

This is not a good thing at all. In fact, this will harm the image of EVs. A 15 kW charger would charge a Hyundai Kona in over 4 hours. Public charging stations need to be 50 kW or more so that they are actually fast.

For perspective:
Tesla Superchargers = 120 kW currently, upgrading soon.
Ionity, Fastned, Electrify America = 150 kW (on 400 volt vehicles) and 350 kW (on 800 volt vehicles).

15 kW is a joke. This charge speed is barely more than you can pull at home.

I don't want to be cynical, but this will perhaps only be useful for bikes that can realistically get some usable range quickly. The whole point is to stop for shopping or eating and get a decent charge by the time you leave. A Tesla Model 3 will gain about 350 km range in a 30 minute charge cycle.

Re: Delhi to get 84 fast-charging EV stations by March 2019

22km top up? Well thats sad. Sooo sad especially knowing that this is a traffic"less" conservative driving style estimate. We all know how fast a Range of 22 km can drop to 10 km in peak traffic hours. Atleast thats for gasoline powered cars, not sure if same applies to EV's.

And we should take utmost care of this knowing that traffic is just going to get worse in years to come. Either we need more charging time (realistically not possible), or faster chargers (most definitely possible). By the way, a full charge of what in 90 mins? I know they said that you can charge a TATA Tigor in 90 mins with a "Quick" charger. Ermm now I know quick was just 15kW I guess? Don't know what you'll call a Tesla supercharger then.

I know this is finally a welcome move but IMO why not take a little more time, get the charging infrastructure straight and then offer a finished more devoloped charging system instead of jumping the gun. The mass market will take atleast 5 years to catch up with mass use of EV's, hopefully all the infrastructure should be sorted out by then. This should specially be kept in mind considering that we all know how much time predated things take (in this case the 15kw charger) to get an upgrade (maybe 100kw?) in our country.

It beats me why we come up with our own stupid standard? CCS is taking over the world (with exception of US, China and Japan). Why not specify CCS and be done with? We have a blessing in disguise to choose the best standard there is since we are late by a good 5-6 years. Let's not ruin it.

But the real question is are EV and Plug ins going to have the same charging plug and socket ? Has it been standardized ? Also won't charging times vary with battery capacity ?

Even here in the US, CCS is taking over. Teslas for Europe are getting CCS, meanwhile nearly every other EV, except Nissan Leaf, is a CCS vehicle.

This "Bharat" standard seems to be an exercise in vanity. As per usual with our government.

Are they 'universal'. My guess is that only the connector may be different but the basics are the same. Otherwise they have to be specific to a brand, or may be customizable.

This is critical information and may be vital to the choice of power packs in the vehicle.

Delhi govt to setup another 100 EV charging stations

The Delhi government has floated a fresh tender for setting up another 100 charging stations for electric vehicles across the city.

The move comes under its ongoing 'Switch Delhi', an electric vehicle mass awareness campaign to sensitize citizens about the benefits of switching to e-vehicles.

Quote:
Sources said that in an effort to install adequate number of EV charging stations across the national capital in the coming days, the government has been mulling to set up a station after every kilometre, in the next two years.

"Currently, 70 e-charging stations are operational at different parts of the city and the tender for another 70 stations has been floated," said a source in the Delhi government.

Earlier, it had floated a tender to set up 500 EV charging points at 100 locations in the next two years. These stations will be installed at the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) premises, DTC bus depots and markets among others.

To promote electric vehicles on roads, Kejriwal government begun had the eight-month long campaign, involving various departments and also offering subsidy up to Rs 30,000 on purchase of electric-run two wheelers in the city.

Re: Delhi govt to setup another 100 EV charging stations

Thank you for posting. Unfortunately, I am not able to find any other details on these charging stations. Will these be DCFC, 3-phase AC, free etc.?

That said, putting these at DMRC stations is a great idea. Leave the EV to charge at the station and get on the metro. The government should also encourage/subsidize office complexes to install charging stations. While most of the drivers are at work for eight+ hours, the EV can charge at a cheap 240V charging station.

I think the biggest impediment to EV adoption will be the lack of dedicated charging infrastructure for the people who live in flats, as most people do in big cities. Perhaps an enterprising company can buy parking bays in high rises and install charging ports that they can then rent to people who own EVs.
