MG Motor has unveiled the eZS electric SUV. It is expected to be launched in the Indian market by December 2019. The company is hoping to benefit from the government's FAME II scheme.

While MG hasn't revealed any technical details about the eZS, the EV appears to be based on the MG ZS. It has a similar grille as the ZS and the same set of sweptback headlamp clusters. It has a coupe-like roofline with roof rails, blacked-out B and C-pillars and ORVMs with integrated turn signals. The eZS rides on 5-spoke dual-tone alloy wheels. The car seen here is finished in a blue paint.

The MG eZS is expected to get similar interiors to the standard ZS. The car will feature MG's iSMART Next-Gen connectivity features that will debut on the upcoming MG Hector.

The SUV was revealed back in November, wonder why is this being brought up out of nowhere.

Because this has now been revealed in India for the first time and MG is doing a damn good bloody job at marketing and advertising.

Everyone is talking about MG now. Relatives, colleagues all asking me how will it be and should they wait.

They must be spending a silly amount of money and marketing, advertising, brand building online and offline.

The Chinese version revealed last year had impressive specs, as claimed -

Hope the same makes it to the Indian market. Also, what would be the expected pricing? 35 lakhs approx?

428 km range based on NEDC estimate and it’s overly optimistic and far from real world range. EPA system (US method) is closest to real world EV range. EPA range is approximately 0.7 of NEDC range. So in this case it’s ~300 kms (428 * 0.7).

There is only one variant is revealed till now, so it will most likely be same variant across the world including India. Also it’s rumoured to be CBU.

Rajeev Chaba mentioned in ET interview that they are not expecting it to be eligible for FAME II subsidy as there is Rs 15 lakh cap for cars under FAME II.

I see eZs as part of brand building and it’s very good decision. EVs will bring more positivity to the Chinese brands than all other ad spends. Chinese petrol/diesel models will struggle in Indian markets unless aggressively priced. But their EVs will be very successful. Success of SAIC will bring other major Chinese companies like Great Wall motors, Chery, BYD, etc.. to India. BYD already making huge strides in EV bus market in India.

Thank you. 300kms is still a very useable number for many people, unlike the ~100kms number that most of us are used to hearing from EVs.

One contradiction though - the official MG press release mentions that Rajeev Chaba is indeed counting on FAME II subsidies. The material quotes Chaba as saying -

Quote:

"We hope by the time we launch the vehicle; the government would have announced the much-needed subsidies and incentives for the EVs under the recently announced FAME II scheme so that the people are encouraged to by the environmentally friendly mobility solutions. More details about the specifications and features of the eZS will be announced at a later stage"

The well-funded brand is definitely pushing all the hot buttons. In this hyper-competitive market, any new launch needs a differentiator and there's no better one than an electric product.

But doesn't anyone think that the eZS looks.....OLD? Even in these press-prepared pictures, it looks more like a 2013 car to my eyes than a 2019 model. Will look even more ordinary in real life. And will age quickly too. Park the Harrier next to this one & the MG looks 10 years older!

The first thought that crossed my mind was this only. This surely looks half a decade old, already!

Anyways, MG is banking on the specs rather than looks. If you look at the Indian EV car scene, there are literally zero vehicles that offer a 300km kind of range. They will have a big first-mover advantage. The volumes may not be high but it will be good brand building.

Interesting times ahead with the eZS, Kona, and Leaf in the radar. A lot of people will be willing to buy these cars, just for the exclusivity factor.

It does look like an outdated design. Reminds me of the 1st gen S-Cross.

I'm happy that electric cars are going mainstream though! Between this and the Kona, the market for electrics will surely heat up.

If priced well, wouldn't mind being an early adopter.

Now spied testing in India -

Especially when MG's own Hector sports that new wave SUV design language but it seems to be an older model.

The new one looks fresh and much smarter than the Hector in my opinion. Also sports their standard XC90+LC200 mashup center console.

On first sight, I thought this was a facelifted VW Tiguan. Had to do a double take. Seems to be clear where their new design language is inspired from.

Found this video from MG eZs London unveiling and it has more details.New MG ZS EV UK Debut at the London Motorshow 2019

I don't think they would be re-engineering this car for India. It does look like a great offering. With liquid cooled packs, it would be able to handle hot Indian environments, unlike Nissan Leaf.

The price in UK is about 25-32k pounds after govt subsidies. I am guessing it will be priced around 30-40 lakhs in India (localisation will probably bring the cost down). The interiors look pretty good at least from this distance. It may attract some X1 or Q3 buyers.

That being said, its success will depend on whether MG is ready to invest in fast charging infra. The "fast chargers" that we have right now are garbage for this car.

MG India’s new electric SUV - eZs spied near Vadodara

MG Motor India recently announced their tie up with Fortum to install 50 KW DC fast-charging stations before the EZS launch. (Link)

Though specs are yet to be announced, reports claim that the eZS will have a range of over 300 km in a single charge via its lithium-ion battery. The China spec MG eZS gets an electric motor that offers 150 PS power and 350 Nm torque. The electric SUV is capable of a 0 to 50 kmph acceleration in 3.1 seconds and it is probably these same figures which will be seen on its India spec model.
