Toyota's array of Electric Cars are coming in 2025

Toyota Motor Corp, the undisputed champion of hybrids and fuel cell vehicles is now aiming to get half of its global sales from electrified vehicles by 2025, five years ahead of schedule.

Toyota's plans include new electric crossovers and SUV's.

Quote:
Its cars account for more than 80% of the global hybrid vehicle market.
Toyota's array of Electric Cars are coming in 2025-.jpg

Quote:
From 2020 on, the carmaker will introduce at least 10 new BEVs, six of which will be based on the electrified version of its TNGA platform, dubbed e-TNGA, and sold globally. There will be a host of electric SUVs and crossovers in different sizes, along with a sedan and an MPV
Quote:
Toyota says its EV plans must include a stable supply of batteries, as well as improved battery life and durability and proper reuse. It has found partners in China's CATL and electric car maker BYD to help with battery availability.
Toyota is, however, not changing its long-held belief that hydrogen FCVs will be the ultimate zero-emissions vehicles in the future.

They continue to stress the benefits of hybrids and how they are an effective alternative to all-battery EV's, given a fuel efficiency roughly double that of gasoline cars, lower cost and that they do not need charging infrastructure.

re: Toyota's array of Electric Cars are coming in 2025

Only the time will tell what future lies ahead of us. While the world is gearing up for EV may be it will take some time for them to realise that full EV may not be the future rather something mid-way like HVs which Toyota envisions. I wonder how on earth can we ensure electric charging mechanisms in distant places where electricity is still not uninterrupted if not absent completely. At times pumps leverage solar power or generator power to run but that are in smaller quantity and cannot be relied on for charging other vehicles.

And I am still not clear of the strategy of commerical heavy vehicles. I think till 2035 the fuel driven cars will still stay unless nuclear fission powered passenger vehicles come into existence

. Maybe developed countries like the USA already have & are aggressively building charging infrastructure. But for India, hybrids are certainly the TODAY, while electric vehicles are a distant TOMORROW (in terms of mass market acceptance).

Hybrids can be introduced today, will work within the existing (inexistent) infrastructure and double the fuel economy of cars overnight. It really disappoints me that hybrid flagbearers like Toyota have been so slow on the technology in India.

Toyota pitches in for the need a re-look at tax on hybrid vehicles in India.

Quote:
The total tax incidence on hybrid vehicles is 43 per cent, which is inclusive of GST.
Quote:
under the current circumstances further investments on hybrid vehicles in India are not feasible.
Kirloskar Motor (TKM) Managing Director Masakazu Yoshimura:

Quote:
We want to bring, we have products (in Toyota's global portfolio) (but) at the moment taxation system is not favourable
Quote:
Look at China, they incentivised hybrids, then PHEVs (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) and EVs. Now, they are looking at FCVs (fuel cell vehicles). Strategically they are putting (efforts)

Fully agree with your analysis of hybrids and EVs. However, while Toyota at the best of times has never been quick on its market moves (remember the 6 year long Fortuner launch), I would primarily and almost exclusively blame the government policy approach in this and not Toyota.

There is simply no support for getting more mass market hybrid launches in India. To my mind, the path to EV would have been more realistically served with immediate policy incentives to Hybrids. Right now our efforts to clean vehicular air pollution are working a bit like Birbal's chichdi.

There is no reason why cars from 5L - 20 L segment should not have abundant hybrid options - they already do in many other countries - Sri Lanka is a good example. But the duty structure will simply not allow this at present. I think strong CKD incentives as a starting point will help people bring these products into mainstream and from there on to manufacturing lines.

Re: Toyota's array of Electric Cars are coming in 2025

Our policies are too protective about our market. We still are not adequately open for our market and economy to grow freely perhaps due to native lobbying.

If there is one company that can serve mass production of EVs it would be Toyota. 2025 looks like a reasonable time frame for the infrastructure to catch up provided the governments (states and central) crack down on power thefts and organized corruption rampant with Discoms (power distribution companies).

Finally! Hybrids are so perfect for India. The government should reduce/waive the import duties on these cars so the average Indian gets a taste of the technology and the significant FE benefits. Once they do so, they'll never look at a regular car again.

Toyota, Suzuki, Daihatsu Join Hands To Develop Compact EVs, aimed at developed markets like USA, China and Europe, expect some of them to trickle to India too

- First EV from this collaboration is expected to launch in 2020.

- It could be part of the global compact EVs that Toyota has announced recently.

Quote:
Toyota is working with Suzuki and Daihatsu for developing compact EVs. And since Daihatsu is a fully owned subsidiary of Toyota, we can expect some knowledge sharing between both Toyota partnerships - the one with Daihatsu and the one with Suzuki.
- Under the Toyota-Suzuki agreement, both the carmakers will jointly develop affordable EVs for the Indian

- Similarly, future Toyota-Suzuki-Diahatsu models for the global markets could be India bound as well.

Re: Toyota's array of Electric Cars are coming in 2025

BEV markets around the world today.

-Toyota believes it must quickly ready BEVs that compare favorably with conventional vehicles and that will be chosen by its customers.

-In other words, there is the need for BEVs that can be popularized, regardless of government promotion measures.
Toyota's array of Electric Cars are coming in 2025-ev_011_en.jpg

-Toyota will not be constrained by the conventional business model, under which it would simply develop and manufacture BEVs, wholesale them to dealers, and deliver them to customers.

-An overview of Toyota's envisioned business model for the popularization of BEVs.

- For markets with high demand for BEVs, such as China, the United States, and Europe, Toyota is conducting development toward the popularization of BEVs.

- To respond to customers' needs and to encourage many customers to choose its BEVs, such development is being conducted in an efficient manner that will allow Toyota to offer a sufficient number of variations of BEVs at affordable prices.

This shows Toyota's approach to a BEV-dedicated platform, which it is now planning and developing with Subaru.

Within Toyota, this platform is referred to as the "e-TNGA", because Toyota considers it to be one form of its TNGA, or Toyota New Global Architecture.

-By combining multiple modules, such as those for the front, center, and rear of a vehicle, and multiple major components, various variations of vehicles can be efficiently rolled out.

The planning and development of the BEVs introduced here is being conducted by the Toyota ZEV Factory, which is a Toyota internal organization that specializes in product planning and business planning for zero-emission vehicles.

Re: Toyota's array of Electric Cars are coming in 2025

Toyota two pure electric SUV patents leaked in China.

Quote:
obtained two sets of patent pictures of Toyota pure electric concept cars from the National Patent Office. Both new cars are based on the Toyota e-TNGA architecture, one of which is a compact SUV, and the other is positioned as a mid- to large-sized SUV.
- Compact SUV

- Mid-Large sized SUV

COMPACT SUV:

Quote:
The front face of this compact SUV is closer to the former. The biggest difference is that the front wheel eyebrow is directly connected to the front enclosure and the cabin cover. Coming to the side of the body, the new car uses a hidden door handle and replaces the traditional optical exterior mirrors with a camera; the car uses low-wind resistance style wheels and is quite avant-garde.
Quote:
The rear of the new car adopts a slip-back design, and the through taillights are not absent. The C-pillar is sturdy and highly recognizable. The cross-border style of the car makes the overall visual effect more sporty.

MID/Large SUV:

Quote:
Toyota's new medium and large-scale pure electric SUV uses a closed front face design, and the L-shaped three-dimensional headlights cooperate with the trapezoidal mid-net shape similar to the "big mouth" to create a strong attack on the front of the car. On the side of the body, the new car adopts the popular hidden roof design. The waistline extending from the front cabin cover does not pass through the rear. The black trim under the door panel is smooth, which makes the vehicle extremely dive.
Quote:
The rear design of the new car is relatively simple, and the angled polyline design and the two-color painting add a sense of layering to the rear. In addition, the vehicle adopts a shorter front and rear suspension design, which can maximize the optimization of the cockpit space, while reducing the difficulty of the layout of the power battery.

According to previous reports, Toyota announced that it will launch 10 pure electric models in five years starting from 2020. Among the 6 purely electric concept cars previously announced under the e-TNGA architecture, there are 3 SUVs, 1 station wagon and 2 MPV models. This year Toyota has launched two pure electric models in China, C-HR EV ( parameter | inquiry ) and Ezer E Jinqing. By 2025, Toyota will also launch eight pure electric models.

Re: Toyota's array of Electric Cars are coming in 2025

Toyota launched in Japan the ultra-compact electric model C+ pod, initially for for corporate users and local governments.

The model arrives in two versions, Toyota C+pod X priced at ¥ 1,650,000 (~₹ 11.8 lakhs), and Toyota C+pod G priced at ¥ 1,716,000 (~ ₹ 12.2 lakh).

Toyota also said that the model will be available to individual customers by 2022.

Quote:
The Toyota C+pod is 2,490 x 1,290 x 1,550 mm (length x width x height), and has a minimum turning radius of 3.9 meters, allowing it to circulate comfortably in closed corners in narrow streets, minimizing steering wheel operation when parking and offers excellent maneuverability in daily driving.
Quote:
The electric motor produces 12.5 hp and 56 Nm of torque, and is positioned at the rear of the vehicle, being powered by a 9.06 Kwh battery
Quote:
However, because it is light and compact, it has a range of up to 150 km (WLTC mode), which provides peace of mind for everyday use.
Quote:
Toyota C+pod recharging can be done in a common 110V and 6A outlet, taking 16 hours for full charge. If a 220 V and 16A socket (the same as electric coffee makers) is used, it recharges fully in 5 hours.
The maximum speed of the model is 60 km/h.

Delighted to see this practical car that occupies less road space, consumes less energy and serves the role for about 85% of our driving sorties. With time that 150 kms range will double. Electric cars will usher in, IMHO, a trend towards smaller nimbler cars for city driving, utility runs, commuting etc. After all we really don't need 200 bhp to lug our 80 kilo backsides around*. Cars in the 1940s and 1950s had a segment that was small and practical like the cars depicted below. Today we have got so used to an over dose of bhp that we believe a 100 bhp car in underpowered! Till c.1983 there was no car being manufactured in India churning out more than 50 bhp and it isn't as if we didn't have fun.

With a more environment and energy conscious generation coming up, cars for hire coming up, Ola-Uber getting (hopefully) better, fewer will be buying 200 bhp EVs even - they may hire them for the day or the week instead and more might go owning smaller practical EV cars.

Cars below from not so long ago before size & machismo became vital. My father's generation; might be grandfather's generation for some members.
