BMW's i boss reveals plans for 12 electric cars by 2023, with an electric version of the 1 Series set to arrive within the next two years

BMW bosses have exclusively revealed that an entry-level, electric hatchback based on the 1 Series is in the product plan. And it could be here as early as 2021.

It will act as BMW's most affordable EV.

The German firm has outlined an electrification strategy under which 12 fully electric cars and 13 plug-in hybrids will arrive in showrooms in the next four years.
BMW is targeting the more premium and more profitable segments initially; the first to arrive will be the iX3 SUV, followed by the i4 saloon and then BMW’s technological flagship, the iNEXT SUV

New spy photos of the BMW iX 2021 reveal the technological interior of the electric SUV.

The Bavarians' first electric SUV again poses very camouflaged, but letting us take a look at a very sophisticated interior, full of exclusive details. The BMW iX will reach customers at the end of 2021.

The images also show the modern design of the multifunction steering wheel with touch controls, which has part of the illuminated ring or the control distribution in the transmission tunnel, disconnected from the center console.

The five-seat SUV, which was previewed by the Vision iNext concept, will offer up to 500bhp from two electric motors that drive all four wheels. According to BMW’s R&D boss, Frank Weber, it will have a 0-62mph time of less than five seconds and a range of more than 373 miles

while broadly similar in size to the X5 externally, the interior of the iX “offers accommodation and load-carrying space comparable to the X7”, thanks to the electric platform, which makes extensive use of carbon fibre in its construction.

The iX sends power to all four wheels; while the drive split hasn’t been specified it is expected to feature a typical rear bias. Top speed is above 124mph. The iX will be offered with different battery options with a “100kWh plus” unit fitted to the range-topping model. With a claimed average power consumption of 21.0kWh per 100km, that model will offer a range of more than 373 miles, compared to 286 miles offered by the iX3’s lithium-ion battery. Despite the extensive use of aluminium and carbon fibre, the large battery means the iX weighs what Weber described “as a good 2.5 tons”.

The top-end variant, possibly with one motor at each axle, will offer a maximum power of 250 PS or 246 hp. The base variant’s motor could be an updated version of the BMW i3s’ 184 PS/181 hp unit.

The BMW iX1 is expected in 2022, a year after BMW launches the all-new X1.

The BMW X1, the entry-level crossover in BMW's SUV range, will move to its next generation in 2022, as confirmed last November.

The Regensburg plant in Germany will start manufacturing the new BMW X1 in 2022, which will be available with both a combustion engine and an all-electric powertrain (such as the BMW iX1).
