Stupid, I can’t see the car for all the smoke. What are they trying to prove? What you save on petrol, you now need to spend on tires?

This particular car has 7 motors and 1400bhp. How can they have 7 motors on 4 wheels.

Mustang Mach-E 1400 has seven motors – five more than even Mustang Mach-E GT. Three are attached to the front differential and four are attached to the rear in pancake style, with a single driveshaft connecting them to the differentials, which have a huge range of adjustability to set the car up for everything from drifting to high-speed track racing.

Developed in collaboration with RTR and built off a Mustang Mach-E GT body-in-white, the prototype targets 1,400 peak horsepower. The chassis and powertrain are set up to allow the team to investigate different layouts and their effects on energy consumption and performance, including rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive. Drift and track setups have completely different front end configurations like control arms and steering changes to allow for extreme steering angles in drifting. Power delivery can be split evenly between front and rear, or completely to one or the other. Downforce is targeted at more than 2,300 lb. at 160 mph.

The 56.8-kilowatt-hour battery (installed) is made up of nickel manganese cobalt pouch cells for ultra-high performance and high discharge rate. The battery system is designed to be cooled during charging using a di-electric coolant, decreasing the time needed between runs.

An electronic brake booster is integrated to allow series regenerative braking combined with ABS and stability control to optimize the braking system. Mustang Mach-E 1400 features Brembo™ brakes, like the Mustang GT4 race car, and a hydraulic handbrake system designed for drifting that integrates with the powertrain controls to enable the ability to shut off power to the rear motors. Mustang Mach-E 1400, which is set to debut at a NASCAR race soon, serves as a test bed for new materials. The hood is made of organic composite fibers, a lightweight alternative to the carbon fiber that comprises the rest of the vehicle.

I just can't imagine the amount of INSTANT torque available at the tap of the foot. It will be nothing but insane! Some more pictures of this monster of a car...

Its called an axial flux motor or something like that. It has magnets mounted 90 degrees to the rotors (with conductors). Its like wankel engine and a Piston engine. I am guessing that by the statement " 4 motors in pancake style" means that they have 4 rotors on the same shaft to the rear diff. So the torque is just insanely multiplied. Google university has lots of links. However the theory, i believe ,dates back to Nicola Tesla himself.

P.S : Being an electrical engineer myself, i am still trying to figure out the working principle part. I am pretty sure it was not in B L Thareja or H Cotton when i studied it

Yes, able to imagine what could be happening here. May be it's like each motor working as a piston(or a cylinder) to rotate a single crank shaft. I thought of another possibility with kind of planetary gear set, 3 motors rotating the smaller gears which turn the bigger gear.

I never imagined this far, looks like putting small motors with a different gear ratios and connecting to a kind of crank shaft, we can achieve better efficiency, better power band by switching the motors on and off.

Re: The Ford Mustang Mach-E

Looks like Ford has hit it out of the park in the first outing itself.

Apart from the name (should have dropped the stang) and that weird outline on the grille and air dam, I quite like this one.

This should give Tesla some sweating... not sleepless nights just yet. Tesla is ahead in terms of efficiency and autonomous driving but if electricity is cheap, will it swing people to Tesla? Autonomous driving doesn't appeal to me in its current form and i think true autonomous driving is at least 3-4 years away. Given these realities, which one would you choose? A tesla or something like the MachE or the BMW iX3/I4?
