Default Breakthrough: First fully rechargeable Li-CO2 Battery

First fully rechargeable Lithium-CO2 battery with 7X range has been reported from University of Illinois, Chicago. Source 1 , Source 2.

Lithium–CO2 batteries are attractive energy‐storage systems for fulfilling the demand of future large‐scale applications such as electric vehicles due to their high specific energy density. However, a major challenge with Li–CO2 batteries is to attain reversible formation and decomposition of the Li2CO3 and carbon discharge products. A fully reversible Li–CO2 battery is developed with overall carbon neutrality using MoS2 nanoflakes as a cathode catalyst combined with an ionic liquid/dimethyl sulfoxide electrolyte. This combination of materials produces a multicomponent composite (Li2CO3/C) product. The battery shows a superior long cycle life of 500 for a fixed 500 mAh g−1 capacity per cycle, far exceeding the best cycling stability reported in Li–CO2 batteries. The long cycle life demonstrates that chemical transformations, making and breaking covalent CO bonds can be used in energy‐storage systems. Theoretical calculations are used to deduce a mechanism for the reversible discharge/charge processes and explain how the carbon interface with Li2CO3 provides the electronic conduction needed for the oxidation of Li2CO3 and carbon to generate the CO2 on charge. This achievement paves the way for the use of CO2 in advanced energy‐storage systems.
To give some perspective, state of the art Li-ion batteries have an energy density of 256 Wh/kg and Li-CO2 batteries have got 1876 Wh/kg. In other words a Hyundai Kona with a Li-CO2 battery would have a range of 450x7.3 = 3300 km (for most of us that would be 2 months of drive).

Now this is what I like to hear! For EVs to become more acceptable amongst the influencers (us BHPians), who undertake long roadtrips, a long range is a must have. Recently did a 1300 km trip and it would have been impossible in a conventional EV without extending the duration by atleast 2X days.

A 1000+ km range car which can be recharged under 10 hrs would be a good start. I'm of the firm believer that India is much better suited for hybrids than pure EVs, but if such tech comes up soon, I might have to change that.

Such technologies will surely solve range anxiety of current EVs. Also, if what the authors claim is true i.e. 500 successful recharge cycles, a simple math for the Kona example gives a staggering battery life of 3300 x 500 = 16.5 lakh kilometers. I guess most of the vehicles wouldn't need a battery change at all.
