Tesla to design ‘Chinese-Style’ cars in China for global markets

Tesla’s seemingly new-found fondness of China comes now in the form of a Design Centre.

Tesla plans to open a design and research center in China to make “Chinese-style” vehicles.

Tesla sought to recruit designers and other staff to help fulfill the goal, and called for applications by Feb. 1, but did not identify the center’s location.

Musk believes these Chinese-designed vehicles could be sold worldwide.

A design sketch included in the recruitment notice seems to offer one potential look at how a ‘Chinese-style’ Tesla model could look. The car presented features a similar front end to the forthcoming Model Y but appears significantly smaller.

re: Tesla to design ‘Chinese-Style’ cars in China for global markets

Electric vehicle sales showed a 4.7% growth in the Chinese market when the overall car sales fell 8.4%.

That's significant growth and potential in a huge market of 25 million cars annually. No wonder Tesla is fond of China, in addition to the obvious cost advantages of making cars there for export to the Asian markets.

What's a Chinese style vehicle?
Hope it's not an acronym for ugly and weird.

Also I hope, these China style offerings remain in China only.

Well, having seen a few of these offerings by Chinese electric car makers, I can assure you they look great and futuristic.

NIO is a new BEV company based out of Shanghai and I have seen it inside out. It looks really cool. BYD offers many models including Buses. Some of them you can see in Pune, plying as city buses. They look decent to me.

If I hadn't seen the design sketch I would have thought that the Chinese style could also mean vehicles with long wheelbase as the Chinese have been fond of extended wheelbase over standard wheelbase of premium cars. They probably are planning for mass market hatchbacks and/or smaller SUVs.
