Mahindra Atom electric quadricycle spied testing in Chennai

Showcased as a concept at the 2018 Auto Expo, Mahindra is now getting ready to showcase the production spec Atom electric quadricycle at 2020 Auto Expo next month.

Just a few days after confirming the launch of its first quadricycle, the Mahindra Atom EV, a camouflaged prototype has been spotted testing near Chennai. The Atom was showcased in the form of a well-equipped upmarket last-mile connectivity concept at the 2018 Auto Expo.

Fast forward by two years, the quadricycle segment is officially a thing in India and Mahindra is set to become the second automaker (after Bajaj Auto) to take a shot at this space. In fact, the Mahindra Atom looks set to become the first electric quadricycle in the country when it launches in the third quarter of 2020.

Reva v3 !

So Mahindra looks to have given the Reva a new lease of life in this form. A lot will depend on the range, and if good, should see the numbers too.

Next to this, that white Brezza in the background is looking like a Hummer. Please Mahindra, stop making EVS on tiny cartoonish shapes and on ICE-failed cars like Verito etc. Instead, give us EV on good-looking XUV300 to take on the current EV trio.

Indian roads are all about brawn. The bigger the car, the better. This tiny car will be lowest in the pecking order and will be bullied even by autorickshaws. Instead, give us EV on Scorpio, XUV etc. That will be segment first in India.

atom looks very close to a E2O.
But will it have performance like E2O?
Now E2O was no GTI, but I have generally not found it lacking in city driving.
It would hit about 70kmph on road with ease, could overtake rickshaws and trucks with ease due to that low end torque and was super narrow and hence could fit in tight places.

But the quadricycle name worries me, it just means that it has not passed a single crash test. While I can understand if it has not passed any test at 50kmph, but this thing looks like it will damage it's occupants at even 10kmph

I saw this vehicle on test this Monday near Mamandur (Chengalpet to Chennai route). Looks like a toy car and felt the E2O looked better . Could not take pictures as I was driving my car.

I think the car (?) was driving at its top speed and there was an audible whine from the motor. The driver was a hefty guy and I felt he looked cramped inside.

There was a good fleet of Mahindra Vehicles being tested (I think I could make out the New XUV500, XUV300, etc., in Camao) that day considering the Mahindra Research Valley is located in the Mahindra World Campus near SingaperumalKoil in the same NH.

The Mahindra Atom has been spotted testing at Mahindra World City near Chennai.

The Atom is an electric quadricycle that was showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo. It is a 2-door vehicle that has been essentially built for last-mile connectivity.

The Atom has a sloping roofline with a narrow rear windshield. It has triple-pod tail lights and reflector strips positioned on the bumper. The spy images also reveal a rectangular hatch.

The Mahindra Atom could be powered by a 15 kW electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack. Like the concept, it could get a swappable battery pack mounted in the rear. Being categorized as a quadricycle, the Atom is expected to be limited to a top speed of 70 km/h.

This vehicle looks like perfect option for personal compact urban mobility. They should not launch as Rickshaw Replacement only. It has potential as the perfect option for day to day office goers and shoppers in the city. Compact footprint and electric drivetrain will be boon for this use. Hopefully Mahindra does justice by not only launching barebones but with some flesh on it.

Well,
No floor carpets, No head rest and safety, only lap belts, spare wheel as a decorative element in the interior, spartan two spoke steering; Mahindra is making sure that atom should not trigger a revolution of personal urban mobility. Kudos Mahindra for sticking to your roots.
