Jaguar Land Rover & Tata Power to set up EV chargers in India

Jaguar Land Rover has formed a partnership with Tata Power to set up EV chargers in India as the British carmaker prepares to introduce electric vehicles in the country.

Tata Power will set up EV charging points at 27 Jaguar Land Rover outlets in 24 cities. AC and DC chargers ranging from 7 kW to 50 kW capacity will be installed at designated premises. Tata Power will also assist with setting up other after sales related support services.

The new infrastructure is expected to benefit owners of the Jaguar I-Pace, which will be launched in India in the second half of 2020. The carmaker also plans to launch more Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) in the future.

Additionally, Tata Power plans to have a network to over 120 charging points across public, captive, residential & corporate segments.

Well begun is half done, as they say.

However, the number of charging points being planned to be set up appears grossly inadequate to sustain a substantial EV population across the country. There should be an EV charging point at each petrol pump, ideally, I think. Tata and JLR should perhaps look at signing the required agreements with oil companies in India for them to be able to install charging points at all petrol pumps.

One of the discussions EV charging partners are having is that, charging stations are not suitable at petrol pumps due to fundamental design differences. Petrol pumps are designed for continuous flow of vehicles, where as EV charging stations are to be designed for some stationary time. It can surely be a stop gap arrangement for a while but not in long term. So, would you be willing to invest upwards of 10 lakhs for setting up of charging stations at petrol bunks!

I think charging points for four-to-five vehicles, which would remain stationary for a good while, can easily be accommodated within the present design of petrol pumps. Whether that would be sufficient in the long term is a moot point.

It's always a challenge to come up with a foolproof solution on day one, but got to appreciate Tata's efforts in moving in the right direction. NexonEV is a fantastic product at that price point and now charging stations being mooted multiple cities. Looking forward to the day when one can drive on even if the charge indicator says 30 km left as universal charging points will be present all around the nation!
