Default Tesla produces 1 millionth car.

Tesla just reached the 1-millionth production milestone. Elon Musk revealed this via tweet congratulating the Tesla team for producing their 1 millionth car. It's a Model Y, whose deliveries are expected to start this month after the reveal a year ago. Tesla hit the 1 lakh milestone at the end of 2015.

Millionth vehicle is Model-Y

Tesla has rolled out its 1,000,000th electric car from its manufacturing facility in Fremont, California. The picture of the milestone-achiever Tesla Model Y was shared on Twitter by none other Elon Musk, the CEO of arguably the best EV brand in the world. The Model Y crossover is the fifth product from the brand, following the likes of the Model S, Model X, Model 3 and the upcoming new-gen Roadster.

The company had set up its Tesla Giga Shanghai manufacturing facility with the aim to commence Made-In-China (MID) Model Y deliveries by January 2021. This would be followed by an annual production rate of 2,50,000 vehicles by the next year. Tesla planned to launch the MID Model Y by the end of 2020 but had to back off a bit due to the coronavirus outbreak. In fact, the targeted timeline of January 2021 could also see a shift if the epidemic escalates in impact.

, a game-changer if I ever saw one! The fact that Tesla has 1 million customers is huge. But what's even bigger is that they have paved the way for the next 10 million EVs. Tesla's real achievement is how they changed the perception of EVs. Before, EVs were either science projects, "compliance" cars (small numbers to meet government norms), boring, slow or all of these points combined.

Tesla made EVs cool & sexy. Once you make customers demand electric power, all other car manufacturers have to follow. Tesla has changed the direction of the industry.

Sadly this is still true for most of the industry. Major companies like Mercedes, BMW, Honda, Toyota, etc... are still releasing only compliance cars. For example, Mercedes delayed the release of EQC and BMW cancelled iX3 for US to meet emission norms in Europe. Same with Honda and Toyota setting up EV factories only in China.

The major exception to this is VW group (VW, Audi, Porsche). They made lot of proactive investments into EVs and battery deals and releasing their EVs in all major markets (EU, US and China).

Tesla's success is partly fueled by reluctance of traditional companies to invest heavily in EVs.

This could be the 'New Kodak Moment' for legacy automakers. Though Kodak had a digital camera division, they didn't invest in it and clung on their film business (their major revenue then). One day, their film business collapsed and Kodak had to declare bankruptcy.

The "New Kodak Moment" is that moment when you realize that customer behaviors and preferences changed so dramatically from your assumptions that it's too late to change.@briansolis

Well Done Tesla! Am amazed at the vision and determination of Mr. Elon Musk. He is one guy whom the current generation and many future generations will take inspiration from.

He has achieved much more in the EV space that many mainstream manufacturers with deep pockets could not. Goes on to prove the old adage 'Where there is a will, there is a way'. Now other manufacturers will be forced to invest on EV technology even though they may not be WILLING to.

But why bring Coronavirus into the name of this thread? Its like saying Trump won the election amidst a coronovirus outbreak. Doesn't seem to make sense to me.

And the best thing about Tesla is that they do not get complacent and rest on their laurels, but continue to innovate. Though now they have an uphill task of pricing their vehicles competitively with their USD 7.5k credit expiring (or has it already expired?).
Other manufacturers will surely exploit this advantage. Though with superb packaging and amazing range provided by Tesla vehicles, doubt even the 7.5k would make much difference over a period of time (cost of ownership). Also, the Model Y is sure to overwhelm EV buyers once again.

What is more commendable than producing million vehicles is that they(Tesla) literally forced the industry biggies to realign their strategies in favor of EVs who were until then resisting to change.

No wonder, just like before-Christ and after-Christ, automotive history in future can be divided into two parts named Before-Tesla and After-Tesla.
