We will introduce the vehicle in the next two years. It will be a made-for-India and made-in-India product, which could be exported to other markets where it fits the requirements

Affordable Hyundai electric SUV coming in 2022

According to a media report, Hyundai is working on a new electric SUV for the mass market. The carmaker aims to launch it by 2022.

The report suggests that Hyundai's new electric SUV will be based on a flexible platform that would also support conventional powertrains including hybrids. The electric SUV could have a maximum range of 200-300 km.

It has been reported that Hyundai is working on setting up a local supplier base for the new electric SUV. It is also planning to set up a battery manufacturing plant in India.

Hyundai's new electric SUV could compete with the Tata Nexon EV in the Indian market.

Why do they need an affordable 'SUV'?. If Hyundai brings an electric hatch like Nios which is priced sensibly that will attract lot of customers. As the production cost of SUVs are larger compared to a hatch, so its easy to make an affordable hatch.

People pay more for SUVs than hatchbacks. Electric vehicles cost more due to high battery costs, so it will be easier to justify a high sticker price for SUV than hatch. Also, SUVs sales continue to grow each year across the world including India.

2 years seems to be very far. Hopefully the Chinese (MG, Great Wall, etc...) will bring much-needed competition with affordable EV models to Indian market before that. Otherwise, traditional automakers will continue to ignore the Indian market for EV releases.

Electric car design is fundamentally different from an ICE car. Factors like weight distribution, space management, driving dynamics etc, can be far superior if an EV is built from ground up rather than as a compromise using an existing platform. Consider the Nexon EV. Eventhough its electric, it doesn't have a frunk like a Tesla model 3 and has motors tucked under the bonnet.

I will be happy if Hyundai uses these 2 years to come up with a low cost EV architecture instead of converting a half baked ICE car into an EV.

Not just Hyundai, in 2 - 4 years, we'll have "affordable" crossovers from many more brands. I would expect one from Maruti too.

1. Crossovers & SUVs offer unbelievable profit margins.

2. There is actually not as much of a cost difference between a hatchback & crossover. At least not as much as their MRP would have you believe.

I'm honestly not sure why that is though? If you take Hyundai for example, a Venue with similar kit to a Gi10 Nios costs almost 4.5 lakhs+ higher(5.5 for the DCT turbo vs AMT), and in terms of space or equipment doesn't offer much. Sure, the power is a bit higher in the turbo variant of the Venue, but I didn't feel that it was that much better car to drive.

Are people willing to pay that much more for seating up a bit higher? Maybe I'll never understand since I've never liked crossovers.
