Volvo India delays XC40 Recharge launch due to chip shortage

Volvo India has announced that the launch of the XC40 Recharge has been pushed to early 2022 due to the ongoing semiconductor shortage.

The all-electric XC40 Recharge was unveiled in India in March this year. Pre-bookings for the car were supposed to start from June, but the carmaker has now decided to postpone the date.

The XC40 Recharge uses two 150 kW electric motors mounted on the front and rear axles. The combined output is 408 BHP and 660 Nm. Volvo claims that the car does 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, while its top speed is limited to 180 km/h.

The electric motors are powered by a 78 kWh battery that is claimed to offer a maximum range of around 418 km. The battery can be recharged from 10% to 80% in 40 minutes using a fast charger.

Volvo has also confirmed that it would launch the petrol variants of the S90 and XC60 this year. Meanwhile, diesel cars will be phased out by end-2021.

Volvo India's official statement:

Quote:
The global shortage of semiconductors has resulted in Volvo having to reschedule the production of XC40 Recharge. Subsequently, Volvo Car India has also decided to defer the bookings and launch of the XC40 Recharge to early next year. The company believes in giving a committed delivery date to customers once they book. Volvo Car India will continue to deliver the current lineup. Our XC40 and S60 petrol variants are already available in India and we will introduce petrol variants of our premium sedan S90 and mid-size luxury SUV XC60 this year as we are committed to phase out diesel cars by end of this year. This is in line with our ambition to become a full electric car company by 2030.

27.1kwh/100km, that translates to around 3.7km/kwh, and having 78kwh battery pack it gives 288km, that's quite less and very inefficient, hopefully, the efficiency can be improved and was low due to the terrain and the driving pattern.

re: Volvo XC40 Recharge Electric SUV, now launched at Rs. 55.90 lakhs

Hello everyone, I managed to stumble upon the ex-showroom pricing of the XC40 recharge on Volvo's official India website while playing around with the build your own feature. It currently states 75 lakhs as the ex-showroom price and you can access the page through this link :

https://www.volvocars.com/in/build/x...50159611041348

I wouldn't be surprised if this page is taken down soon since there has been no official announcement from Volvo regarding the pricing. They might have been just testing the page so the pricing could possibly vary. I was holding out high hopes that they launch it around the 50 lakhs mark but at 75, it just doesn't make any sense. Just buying the regular XC40 and putting the remaining money in the bank would generate more than enough interest to cover your yearly fuel expenses.

I'm uploading some screenshots in case they take the page down :

You can clearly see the 75 lakh pricing at the top right and also at the bottom on the last image. I also found it interesting that you have an option for Nappa leather interior which is only available on the XC60 lineup and up currently according to my knowledge. Hope someone finds this useful.

The page still exists and the price is same as you mentioned. 75 lakhs ex-showroom is just too much. I, too, was hoping it to be below 60 lakhs on-road price in Gurgaon. The XC60 is priced lower than it. Also, the newly launched Lexus' price makes more sense than this one.

Volvo XC40 Electric priced at Rs 75 lakh? All details leak via official website

Volvo is also expected to launch a plug-in hybrid version of XC40 in India in future

Volvo was one of the first luxury auto brands in India to confirm the launch of a fully electric SUV in India. However, numerous delays meant German rivals like Mercedes Benz, Audi and BMW leapfrogged the Swedish marque in launching their respective EV offerings in the country.

The company unveiled its first electric SUV in the form of XC40 Recharge back in March last year with an aim of commencing bookings from June whereas deliveries were slated to begin from October 2021 onwards. However, since then there have been no developments regarding launch of the electric SUV until now.

Volvo XC40 Electric Price
Volvo has now officially listed XC40 Recharge with its prices and specs on its India website. The fully electric crossover will be offered at a price of Rs 75 lakhs (ex-showroom) and will reach Indian shores as a Completely Built Unit (CBU). New Volvo Electric XC40 will be available in a single, fully-loaded Recharge Pro trim. Volvo is yet to confirm when the bookings and deliveries of the electric SUV will actually commence.

[ATTACH=volvoxc40indialaunchpricefeaturescolours976 8x533.jpg]2287509[ATTACH]

Powering the India-spec XC40 Recharge is a 75kWh battery pack that feeds energy to a twin electric motor setup- one on each axle. This powertrain returns a combined output of 408 bhp and 660 Nm of peak torque. While top speed is limited to 180kmph, the electric SUV can sprint 0-100kmph in just 4.9 seconds.

Volvo XC40 Recharge- Exterior Design
Visually, XC40 Recharge is very similar to its gasoline counterpart barring a few tweaks in its styling. The most noticeable update in the fully-electric version will be a new sealed front fascia which replaces a conventional mesh-like grille. It also receives a ‘Recharge’ badging at front while the fuel refilling lid on the rear panel serves as a battery charging port for the SUV. Along the side profile, it gets similar cuts and creases as the regular petrol-powered XC40 which gives it a sharp look. It rides on 19-inch dual-tone diamond-cut alloy wheels that give it a premium appeal. At rear, it features a pair of vertically stacked L-shaped LED taillamps, raked rear glass panel and Volvo lettering on the tailgate.

Interiors & Features
Inside the cabin, XC40 Recharge will be offered with two interior themes- Charcoal Leather; and Nubuck textile with Vinyl and Nappa leather, both all-black schemes. It gets a very familiar cabin with a minimalistic layout featuring a vertically-oriented touchscreen infotainment display and air-con vents. The Android-based infotainment system is laced with ‘Volvo On Call’ in-car connectivity technology with scheduled Over-the-Air (OTA) updates. Other standard features included are heated seats in front and back, a multifunctional steering wheel, automatic climate control and more. On the safety front, it will offer a 360-degree parking camera, multiple airbags, lane assist and emergency braking system. It is available in five exterior colour options including Black Stone, Denim Blue, Fusion Red, Glacier Silver and Crystal White.

re: Volvo XC40 Electric priced at Rs 75 lakh? All details leak via official website

I saw this link last night and this morning the price has been removed. Rest assured someone at Volvo India is "gonna get a hurt real bad" today

The pricing is way off. For the same OTR price considering no road tax on EV, one can get top end variants of the XC60,X3 or Q5. All of these are a whole segment above the XC40 which is comparable to the X1.

Volvo India heads gave a very different picture to the media earlier that they will price is close to the XC40 and won't be milking by having a huge price gap between the EV and ICE engine of the same model. However, it seems they have gone back on their words and succumbed to the low volume and higher margin play like the rest.
XC40 is 43L ex-showroom and this EV XC40 is a whole 75% extra at 75L ex-showroom.

Disappointing. At this rate the EV market will not take off. The price is a good 10L lakhs off from the fair/sweet spot, even at 65L pricing it would be a handsome 50% over it's ICE version.
I was seriously considering this for a family member but will now go for one of the german options mentioned earlier.

Another way to look at this is the price to performance ratio. 410bhp, 660Nm and 0-100 in 4.xx seconds. There are some serious numbers, beyond your 530ds and comparing well with the A45 AMG. In that sense, the pricing isn’t too off.

Lol. That'd mean nearly 90L OTR. God this is frustrating for anyone interested in the EV space between 35-75L. Apart from the Mini Electric, nothing else exists.

On top of the price issue, current gen will be short-lived as Volvo has already revealed the MY2023 facelift with C40-esque face, interior updates and better charging tech/time.

Doesnt make too much sense if they still proceed with MY22 deliveries.

Fair enough, but that's just straight line performance. This is a family SUV with a powerful motor not a track happy super hatch or even a performance sedan (S5/M340i/C43).
