The first images of the Volkswagen ID.4 electric SUV have leaked online through a set of documents.



According to the documents, the ID.4 will have an overall length of 4,592 mm and will be 1,852 mm wide and 1,629 mm in height. The car will have a wheelbase of 2,765 mm.



The ID.4 features typical Volkswagen design with clean lines. Despite being an electric car, the design incorporates a more conventional looking front fascia. The SUV has a coupe-like roof line and at the rear it has smoked tail lamp clusters with a light bar that runs across the width of the car.



The ID.4 is likely to be offered with an electric motor that powers the rear wheels. It is expected to produce 200 BHP and 310 Nm. A dual-motor version with all-wheel drive is expected to arrive later down the line. It could have an output of 302 BHP and 450 Nm.

The ID.4 is rumoured to be offered with an 83 kWh battery pack offering a range of up to 500 km (WLTP cycle). Customers are also likely to get more battery options with lower capacities.

Is it just me or does this design have a lot of similarities to the Tata Harrier..the curvy raked roofline, the rear three quarters and in fact almost the entire silhouette.

It just feels a bit inspired and not a typical VW design in my opinion.

On the other hand the dieselgate fiasco has nudged the VW group to expedite its foray in EVs.

A beautiful looking car. EV's are offering designers the opportunity to modify looks especially the frontis piece. We have an exciting decade ahead of us where automobiles go. How often in the history of all forms of transportation do you witness such radical change in an industry unfold rapidly before your eyes. I think it is worth while {at least for me} to wait out a few years before I change cars and see the full repertoire of EVs and Hybrids that come before deciding.

This design definitely has the wow factor. The decade ahead seems to be a fantastic one. Not even covid can dampen the spirits when you see the host of EVs our way with such stylish looks and mind boggling torque figures!!

As VW begins the production of the ID.4 in Germany, the compact SUV, which will also be built at Volkswagen factories in the US and China, is the second car built on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB electric platform, following the recently launched ID 3 hatchback.

The ID 4 will initially be offered with rear-wheel drive and a range of up to 311 miles. Volkswagen says production of the SUV began on time, despite the disruption caused by the corona virus.

Zwickau was previously home to the Passat. Volkswagen has spent €1.2 billion (£1.1bn) converting it to house an MEB-platform production line with an initial capacity of around 300,000 vehicles.

Pre-production of the ID 4 has also begun at Volkswagen's factory in Anting, China, and production is due to begin in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 2022

Some thoughts about the car,

-Lengthier than Tiguan and Tucson at 4592mm with a wheelbase of 2765mm.
- Battery size would be around 45-50kWh for Indian car. (assumed given the range)
- Batteries supplied by LG Chem just like in the ID.3.
- I expect prices to be around ₹45 to ₹50l ex showroom.
- No exact timeframe given by VW India yet but I expect it to be launched after the Taigun.

Good design is also always functional — in an electric vehicle, drag is a key factor for range. ‘The electric design evolution of the ID.4 also means that we have focused very strongly on the aerodynamics,’ explains the head of Volkswagen Design. The ID.4 achieves an excellent drag coefficient of 0.28. The most important factor for this is the flowing basic shape of the vehicle body and passenger compartment, which is significantly drawn in toward the rear. This is complemented by many precisely executed details. For instance, the bodies of the tail light clusters together with the large roof spoiler ensure that the air flow is cleanly separated.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk meets with VW CEO, gets preview of ID.3 and ID.4 electric cars.

Tesla’s CEO was also apparently given a preview of the ID.3 and the ID.4 electric vehicles at the airport.

Musk and Diess both had good things to say about each other in the past.

During his short-lived attempt to take Tesla private, Musk reportedly did consider Volkswagen has a partner.
