Re: Review: The Tata Nexon EV

Questions:
1. What is the typical highway range on one charge

And for those who have done Mangalore-Bangalore or Udupi-Bangalore, climbing the ghats - how many times do you have to charge for this one-way trip ?

(Our neighbour seems to have an issue with the range on his Nexon EV)

I have done Bangalore > Mangalore > Bangalore on my Tiago.ev LR 24kw battery

Bangalore to Mangalore - Just one charge at Hassan to 90% is enough as the downwards Ghats provide enough regen to make it to Mangalore with 20-25% left

Mangalore to Bangalore needs two charges ( three if you cant do a overnight slow charge @ mangalore ), one at end of the Ghat up to 75% and one mid way near Kunigal upto 75%, this is enough to reach bangalore with 20-25% spare.

all this is 75-85kmph driving keeping AEC at 105 overall ( my typical HW range for 24kw battery is 220-230 for 95% battery @ 105whkm )

Re: Review: The Tata Nexon EV

Is there a map showing Tata's charging stations in Karnataka? Also all of India?

What's the time it took you to do this 90% and 75% recharge?

Also, which is the charging station after the ghats towards B'lore?

each charging session was roughly 45 mins to 1 hr, since I did a round trip in a day I had to DC fast charge for the first leg of my return journey too

These were locations onwards to Mangalore started at 100% SOC

Stop 1 @ 35% SOC charged till 93% SOC 45 mins

Sky birds Hassan Zeon - https://www.plugshare.com/location/364158

Returning from Mangalore to Bangalore

Stop 2 @ 25% SOC charged till 100% SOC 1.15 hrs

Mangalore Cauvery Tata Power 25KW https://www.plugshare.com/location/519940

Stop 3 Post Ghats @ 35% SOC charged till 93% SOC 1hr

Sourabh Delicasy TATA Power 30Kw - https://www.plugshare.com/location/546666

Stop 4 @45%SOC topped up till 75% SOC 25mins

Paakashala-Zeon - https://www.plugshare.com/location/354869

Reached home with 35% SOC

--------------------------------

Stop 4 can technically be avoided if you do a conservative driving on a Nexon, Tiago needs a quick 20 min top up.

Stop 2 can be avoided if you are doing a overnight stay in Mangalore and have access to slow charging

Hope this helps

No need of excessive hypermilling. Just regular driving it’s possible to get 100-105whkm overall for the trip.

It’s is easily possible in Tiago just avoid cruise control and keep in regen 0 until you reach Ghats. On ghats keep regen 2. Regen 3 only for steep downhills. For uphil again regen 0

For my Bangalore Chennai round trip I got AEC of 94whkm using same method

Speeds between 75-90 max

Re: Review: The Tata Nexon EV

Battery replaced again!

About a year back, I had posted (Review: The Tata Nexon EV)about our Nexon EV's battery failure for the second time in 2 years. Well, I can update the records with 3 failures in 3 years - our car's main battery had to be replaced again, now total of 3 times in 3 years and approx 64000kms.

This time fortunately it took only one week for the replacement (last time it was one month). Didn't have to pay anything since battery is covered by warranty for 8 years. Still it does not give me confidence that a main part like battery pack had to be replaced once every year.

Anyways we were planning to change the car in 3 years. So planning to move out of the Tata camp. Mostly going for a MG ZS EV.

Re: Review: The Tata Nexon EV

This is too bad, any particular reason TATA Motors pointed out for this multiple battery replacements? Have you identified any early warning signals?

I have driven from Udupi to Hassan on my Nexon EV Prime-30 KW. Started from Udupi with 100% charge and Fast charged at Hotel Aditya in Ujire (50%- 100%). Reached Hassan via Shiradi Ghat with around 35% balance charge . (With 4 passengers and AC). On the way back 100% charge at Tata Motors Hassan was sufficient to reach Udupi via Charmadi Ghat with still 16% charge left.

I have also travelled from Udupi to Madikeri by Fast charging at Tata motors Mangalore 70% to 100% and reached Madikeri with around 17% charge left. On the way back from Madikeri to Udupi 100% charge at start was sufficient to reach home.

Climbing uphill on ghats consumes too much power.

There have not been any communication whatsoever from Tata motors or the service center - in fact the most frustrating part for me is not that there were 3 failures, it is that there is no system in place to update the customer about what was the problem, is there something to be done to avoid it, when the vehicle will be returned etc - basically, unless I keep checking, I dont get any updates at all. In Summary - No, I have no clue why this is happening.

Early warning signals - not really. I had done fast charging once before the most recent failure, about a 3-4 days back I did fast charging (to 80%), then I never charged it to 100%. Could that be a trigger? I really don't know.

I have a Nexon MAX. Normally I get ~300km per full charge.

For Bglr-Mglr: One charge at Kunigal Paakashala/Harsha Grand (to 100% from 70%) is enough as it goes downhill.

For Mglr-Bglr: Start with 100% and one charge at Skybird Shantiram during lunch (20% -> 90%) will do. I normally stop at 70% and stop again at Kunigal for a coffee break with charging.

I feel, all EV owners should monitor the charging and discharging curves on a regular basis and should take their cars down to <5% SOC once a month at least. One of the symptom of possible battery issue is the sudden jump in SOC while charging and the other is sudden drop in SOC at lower SOC levels. In my case, If I had not let the battery drop below 15% , I would have never known that there was a issue with my battery. I hope, I wont face this issue after battery replacement. Please find below the SOC sudden drops and jumps:
UPDATE : Got my Battery replaced by TATA . It was hassle free and at Zero cost . Drove 200+ Kms after replacement down to 15% SOC without any issues . Will drive it below 15% next time. Please find the screenshot of the SOC :

Re: Review: The Tata Nexon EV

Tata's new plant where Nexon is built includes 100% error proofing, image-based defect capturing, real-time equipment health monitoring and quality and logistics IT systems. Hope this sorts out issues faced by Tata Car owners

Re: Review: The Tata Nexon EV

I am seeing sudden drop in charge percentage when SOC drops below 17%. I had raised the same complaint before 5-6 months back. I took to Malayalam Motors Vazhakkala. The car was inspected by the Tata engineers and they mentioned they updated some software and asked me to ensure that the car is charged using slow charger to 100% consecutively for 7 days. It appeared to solve the problem though I rarely took it below 20%.
The same issue has reappeared again and fortunately I was able to capture that in a video. You can see that the charge dropped from 17% to 5% in around 5.2 kms (Kindly excuse the poor videography skills. I was just hoping to capture the evidence to show it to the Service engineers).

Also something that I have noticed is when the charge reduces rapidly, it gets charged rapidly as well. Say I plug in for 15-20 minutes from 5%, it reaches back to 17-18% in 15-20 minutes. Not sure if it is always the case but I have noticed it whenever there is a sudden fall in SOC.

I have not reported it yet (The incident happened last week) as it is not a problem above 20% of charge and as I am yet to get time for the same. It would be of great help if you can recommend a competent service station/SA that I can deal with in Ernakulam/Muvattupuzha, Kerala to get this issue sorted out. For now I am planning my commute in such a way that I can safely reach back home with 20% balance.
