Ioniq 5 is the first vehicle to apply the Hyundai Motor Group's electric vehicle platform E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform), and maximizes the use of indoor space through an optimized space design. In addition, the theme of'Living Space' for all passengers has been added to have a differentiated interior design unique to an electric vehicle.

Hyundai Motor Company introduced the IONIC 5
▲Flat Floor, which eliminated the interior tunnel part, which was the structural limitation of internal combustion locomotives,
▲'Universal Island', a console that can move back and forth
▲Slim cockpit (Dashboard component module of the driver's seat)
▲ The electronic shifting lever (SBW) arranged around the steering wheel was applied to increase the convenience of indoor movement and to utilize the interior space in various ways.

Re: Hyundai creates EV sub-brand called Ioniq

Hyundai would have been in an enviable position if the JV for Autonomous EV's with Apple went through. But as they say, not everyone can keep a secret. Apparently, this was the reason Apple unceremoniously dumped Hyundai. Everyone knows how Apple safeguards its secret.

Re: Hyundai creates EV sub-brand called Ioniq

Ioniq 5 revealed

IONIQ 5 is available with a range of power electric (PE) configurations to fit the mobility needs of every customer, with no compromises on performance. Customers can select from two battery pack options, either 58 kWh or 72.6 kWh[3], and two electric motor layouts, either with a rear motor only or with both front and rear motors. All PE variations provide outstanding range and deliver a top speed of 185 km/h.

At the top of the electric motor lineup is an all-wheel drive (AWD) option paired with the 72.6-kWh battery, producing a combined power output of 225-kWh and 605 Nm of torque. This PE configuration can go from 0 km/h to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds.

When equipped with two-wheel drive (2WD) and 72.6-kWh battery, IONIQ 5’s maximum driving range on a single charge will be around 470~480 km[4], according to the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) standard.

Re: Hyundai creates EV sub-brand called Ioniq

The E-GMP platform allows both 400-volt and 800-volt charging capabilities, with Hyundai claiming the Ioniq 5 can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in around 18 minutes on the fastest (and rarest) 350kW chargers.

More interestingly, though, is the Ioniq 5’s ‘vehicle to load’ function. Hyundai can supply you with an adapter for the car’s charging port, allowing you to actually use the Ioniq to charge other things. Yes, there is a power outlet inside the car, but this adaptor allows you to charge things like e-bikes and e-scooters, along with power tools and even another EV in desperate need of juice.

Re: Hyundai creates EV sub-brand called Ioniq

3000 examples of launch edition will be available for delivery in summer to select few countries at a price of €58,995.

Freely translated from this article here
Quote:
The first copies of the Ioniq 5 will be delivered in the summer of this year. The Netherlands can count itself lucky. Our country, together with France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Norway, is one of the few countries where a special introductory version of the Ioniq 5 will be available, the Project 45. This series, consisting of only 3,000 cars, is the first series to be available. The price of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 Project 45 is € 58,995. The equipment includes 20-inch wheels, a roof with solar cells and the extensive head-up display. The prices and starting price of the regular versions of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 will follow later.
The introductory price of launch edition looks steep to me. I hope that the normal series production models will be priced around €40-45k to attract attention to Ioniq. Otherwise it's a tough sell as Tesla model 3 is easily a better option in both lower and higher capacity packs.

Why?
  • Okay range. Hyundai cleverly leaves out WLTP range for the 2WD 58kWh battery pack. For comparison, Tesla model 3 Standard range (55kWh) has 440km (WLTP) range and Long range (78kWh) has a 580km (WLTP) range
  • No mention of Heatpump or Conventional resistance heaters. Current gen model 3 comes with heatpump. This is very important thing for winter weather conditions to improve range.
  • Okay performance. 0-100kmph for 2WD 58kWh model is 8.5seconds. That's ICE territory. Top of line AWD 72.6kWh model sprints 0-100kmph in 5.2seconds. For comparison, Tesla model 3 standard range does 0-100kmph in 5.6s and Long range 4.4s respectively.

Though Hyundai launched Kona electric in India, I highly doubt if they will launch Ioniq 5 in India. Kona can easily fit into crossover segment and justify higher price points. Whereas Ioniq 5 (looking at pricing) will only fit in the Compact luxury segment which is already not very well received I think. Let's wait and watch.

Re: Hyundai creates EV sub-brand called Ioniq

Does this mean they stop or will rename the current IONIQ cars? IONIQ has been around as a model for a few years. Its Hyundai's version of the Prius offered as a PHEV, Hybrid and all Electric car.

Re: Hyundai creates EV sub-brand called Ioniq

Those round interior door handles seem to out of place in a car with such a squarish origami like design.

The whole interior seems to be quite tame with all the rounded corners. On its own its great, but apart from the screens and instrument cluster(s), its doesn't look like the interior of the car we see from outside.

Re: Hyundai creates EV sub-brand called Ioniq

In my previous post, I was critical on the price, range and acceleration performance. I got some time to read through their press release and looked at photos in detail. This post is about the things that I love about Ioniq 5. First of all, I have to say that I was quite enthusiastic from seeing their concept project 45 car. When the news came that Ioniq 5 will be resembling the project 45 car, I was sold on the neo-retro looks. I think this will be one of the nicest modern/minimalist looking cars which is going to be on the public roads soon. Apart from the exterior looks, the following are the interesting things I liked about it:
  • Spacious interior. Hyundai used the electric powertrain to their advantage to reduce overhangs, increase wheelbase and provide a lot of interior room for passengers.
  • Movable middle console with flat open space between driver and passenger. I enjoyed using a BMW i3 which also had a similar open dividerless front footwell. It offers a lot of percieved space and roominess in the cabin. Moving the middle console is icing on the cake as it makes the cabin even more modular than of BMW i3's
  • Clean and modern interior with a lot of rounded edges, which is easy on the eyes to look at. Though I did not like the split display much, I liked the small magnetic patch at the driver end for some post its / magnetic stickers / fotos
  • Front Seats with leg rests that come up is a very nice touch. With my 1.91m height and long legs, I sometimes feel my model 3 seats could have had a bit more longer thigh support.
  • Adjustable rear seats. This is the next best thing after Honda's magic seats in a 2 row type car seat.
  • 800V DC charging. That's pretty sweet for charging at those superfast 350kW fast chargers which are popping up in several European countries now a days.
  • 3.6kW power outlets. One inside and one outside. This is a very handy feature I miss on my model 3. I think there is only Honda e which has a similar power outlet, but only one socket within the car.
  • Optional solar roof. Depending on how much output this can provide, it could turn out to be a useful feature for those sunny days, where you could keep your in-car cooler running without any power from battery

If Hyundai prices it well, this would be my next car after my Tesla model 3, given there is no other car maker coming up with a very good overall package like this.

Online reservation for Ioniq 5 launch edition opened in NL (and probably also the other 4 countries). The launch edition is offered in 4 exterior colour and 2 interior colour options. Here are some of the screenshots from the configurator:

This is by far the most informative Ioniq 5 video and gives a good impression of things missed in the premiere and press release:
