Hyundai creates EV sub-brand called Ioniq

Hyundai just launched a new brand "IONIQ" for dedicated battery vehicles. Under the IONIQ brand, Hyundai Motor will introduce three new dedicated models over the next four years with more innovative models to follow.

IONIQ 5 / IONIQ 6 / IONIQ 7:

Hyundai will be launching a range of numerically named EVs under the new brand, with the even numbers used for sedans and the odd numbers for SUVs.

The first model under the IONIQ brand will be the IONIQ 5 midsize CUV that will launch in early 2021. IONIQ 5 is based on the concept EV '45', which Hyundai unveiled at the International Motor Show (IAA) 2019 in Frankfurt as a homage to its very first concept car. IONIQ 5's designers took inspiration from the past and integrated it with cutting-edge parametric pixels, a unique design element that Hyundai designers will continue to incorporate into future IONIQ models.

In 2022, Hyundai will introduce IONIQ 6 sedan, which is based on the company's latest concept EV 'Prophecy', unveiled in March; followed by IONIQ 7, a large SUV in early 2024. Prophecy's iconic exterior design is characterized by its aerodynamic silhouette of perfect proportions.

Likewise, IONIQ vehicles' designs will have a common theme of 'Timeless Value'. The vehicles will be inspired by past models, but they will be a bridge to the future.

E-GMP platform:

IONIQ brand models will sit on an Electric Global Modular Platform, known as E-GMP, that will enable fast charging capability and plentiful driving range.

The EV-dedicated platform will allow Hyundai to reimagine the vehicle interior as "smart living space" with highly adjustable seats, wireless connectivity and unique features such as a glove box designed as drawers. The platform paradigm shift will extend into the user interfaces that will be simple, intuitive and ergonomically designed to help occupants feel at ease.

Hyundai is creating a new sub-brand for electric vehicles (EV) called Ioniq. Starting next year, the Korean carmaker plans to launch a range of models including all-electric SUVs and a sedan under this brand.

The brand will now spawn a family of vehicles that will include a mid-size all-electric SUV called Ioniq 5 planned for early 2021, a sedan based on the Prophecy concept called the Ioniq 6 scheduled for 2022 and the Ioniq 7 that is due in 2024.

The Ioniq range of cars will be based on Hyundai's electric global modular platform (E-GMP). These cars will have fast charging capability.

Hyundai has used the Ioniq name plate for a 5-door car that comes with hybrid, plug-in hybrid and all-electric powertrains. These variants will remain in production.

The Ioniq Electric and Hybrid were showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo (Hyundai Ioniq @ Auto Expo 2018). The Ioniq Electric uses a 38.3 kWh battery and an electric motor that has an output of 134 BHP and 295 Nm. The hybrid variant is powered by a 1.6-litre petrol engine and an electric motor with an output of 43 BHP. The engine is paired with a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Hyundai did promise up to 600 horsepower (447 kilowatts) from the E-GMP platform.

E-GMP platform would be somewhat future-proof, and as such it is capable of 240-volt, 400-volt, and 800-volt high-speed charging

Details of the Ioniq 5:

- Pre-booking of Ioniq 5 First Edition by January 31st next year, when most of the vehicle specifications will be revealed.

- The Ioniq 5 First Edition, which is sold only for 150 units, has an overall length of 4640mm, an overall width of 1890mm, an overall height of 1600mm, and a wheelbase of 3000mm.

- Is equipped with two motors to form a four-wheel drive system. The maximum output is 230kW (about 313ps), and it reaches 100km/h in 5.2 seconds from a standstill

-The battery capacity is 58kWh, and the WLTP-based single-charge driving distance is 450km.

-Optional 73kWh battery pack running up to 550km will also be released.

-It supports 800V quick charging and can charge from 10% to 80% in 18 minutes, and the Solar Roof

-ioniq 5 First Edition is expected to be delivered to customers around June-July next year.
