Tesla Battery Day on 22nd September

So one of the biggest moments of the electric automotive world will be Live streamed at 1:30pm Pacific Time on September 22nd( 2:00am IST September 23rd).

Livestream: https://www.tesla.com/2020shareholdermeeting

There are many expectations for this event, fans have been waiting for the Battery day ever since it was announced.
The Battery day was post poned couple of times, primarily due to the covid situation.

Expectations from the event and their significance in battery improvements:

  • Tesla's improvements in Battery Technology
    • New Battery Chemistry, the Roadrunner Project - Batteries with higher energy density, faster charging, more charge cycles are the need here.
    • Cobalt Less Batteries - With Cobalt comes Human rights issues, technologies such as LiFePO4 batteries already do not use Cobalt.
    • Dry electrode technology - From the patents acquired from Maxwell Technologies, improves production as the drying process of the Battery anode will be quicker.
    • Tabless batteries - Improves faster production of batteries.
    • Batteries with lower resistance - lower resistance means lower heat, needs lesser battery cooling & increases charging speeds.
    • Increase in battery form factor - the alleged Tesla cell which was leaked last week showed atleast a volume increase of 8x, helps in faster production and lesser number of cells per pack.
    • Module less Battery pack - Tesla Model 3 Long range has 4 modules which adds to the complexity, now the battery pack will be like a single module.
  • Tesla's announcement of their own battery production (without Panasonic help) - To me it looks like Tesla requires batteries in the range of TWh. They buy batteries from LG chem, Samsung, CATL and Panasonic, on top of this Elon is expected to announce Tesla's own manufacturing of battery cells.

  • Cost improvements - Tesla do not announce their battery costs, though many people expect it to be around 100$/kwh. With the improvements mentioned in point 1, many EV enthusiasts expect the prices to come well below 75$/kwh, some fans even expect it to be around 50$/kwh.

  • And finally the "one more thing" expectations can be a Tesla Model S Plaid or new interior design for Model S & X.

I am going to watch this event live, this event could showcase what is expected to come in the EV world in another 3-5 years.
If Tesla can make all these above said cost improvements( atleast if some of them come true) the industry will follow in few years.
The battery pack costs anything near to the 75$/kwh will disrupt the automotive industry greatly.

Please keep adding points which I might have missed and your expectations.

Great write up. I wouldn't do this normally but gonna make an exception for battery day and watch it live. Some break through tech is going to announced and I can't wait to see if all the hype has been worth it.

Re: Tesla Battery Day on 22nd September

The Tesla battery day set the pace for EV revolution.

By bringing down battery prices by 56% even if the current battery pack currently costs 120$/kWh, the upgraded battery pack will cost around 55$/kwh . Imagine the battery cost on a 50kwh cheaper EV to cost just ₹2 lakh.

Brief points from event:
Quote:
A 56% total reduction in cost per kwh of the battery pack — massive

A resulting 54% increase in range for the same size pack

Significant reduction in footprint of factories and cost of scaling up production — 69% less investment needed

Silicon anodes with higher capacity and lower cost

New cobalt-free cathodes, including very high capacity all nickel cathodes

Major improvements to the processing part of cathode manufacturing

New sources of immense supplies of Lithium

Making the structural rear of the car from a single casting

Making the battery pack a structural element in the car, effectively making it add no weight to the car

A $25,000 quality EV in 3 years with autonomy capability
Tesla also announced Tesla Model S plaid with 520+miles range, 0-60mph less than 2s, top speed of 200mph. Model S Plaid recorded 1.30.03 time on the Laguna Seca circuit during their test, fastest production car which also includes 2 door sports car.
