Re: Europe is going Electric! EVs are seeing big market-share gains

Fears of EV material shortage loom large in Europe. Semiconductor shortage affects the VW Group:

- VW, Audi cut German output on semiconductor shortage

- Audi is placing 10,000 employees on reduced hours until the end of January in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm.

- Volkswagen is sending roughly 8,800 employees at its plant in Emden, northern Germany, into short-time work until January 19.

Quote:
Plans to phase out internal-combustion-engined cars could be scuppered by the location and supply of some key materials required to produce electric vehicles.
Quote:
Europe’s lack of natural substances compared with other areas of the world, especially China, which is the biggest supplier of 10 such materials to the EU.
Quote:
China is the second-largest global producer of cobalt and lithium, both of which are required for EV batteries, accounting for 7% and 37% of their production volumes.
Quote:
The EU has calculated that to meet its targets for EV batteries and energy storage, it will need up to 18 times more lithium and five times more cobalt in 2030 and almost 60 times more lithium and 15 times more cobalt in 2050, all while global demand for rare earths could increase tenfold

“It just reinforces that we need a mixed market of powertrains,”

Quote:
Clean, mildly hybridised internal combination engines, full-on hybrids, some plug-in hybrids, some pure EVs for certain duty classes and hydrogen [fuel cell EVs] as well. We must develop a competitive, diverse market

Re: Europe is going Electric! EVs are seeing big market-share gains

EU brings law to ban ICE sales by 2035, seems to be too late, why not 2030? Good that they are not exempting synthetic fuels.

Quote:
The European Parliament on Wednesday threw its weight behind a proposed ban on selling new cars with combustion engines in 2035, seeking to step up the fight against climate change through the faster development of electric vehicles.

EU lawmakers also endorsed a 55% reduction in CO2 from automobiles in 2030 compared with 2021. The move deepens an existing obligation on the car industry to lower CO2 discharges by 37.5% on average at the end of the decade compared to last year.

But Germany’s auto industry lobby group VDA criticized the vote, saying it ignored the lack of charging infrastructure in Europe. The group also said the vote was “a decision against innovation and technology” a reference to demands from the industry that synthetic fuels be exempt from the ban, which European lawmakers rejected.

Re: Europe is going Electric! EVs are seeing big market-share gains

Germany, the birth place of petrol engine, Dec 2022 BEV + PHEV sales reached 55%.

Tesla Model 3 and Y are the best selling BEVs.

Re: Europe is going Electric! EVs are seeing big market-share gains

EV market share in 2 major European markets (Germany and UK) is very interesting. Despite negligible subsidies, the BEV market share is similar to Germany which has a decent amount of subsidies. Tesla Model Y is the 3rd best-selling vehicle overall (ICE or EV) in UK for 2022

By 2025, BEV's (full-electric) market share will cross 50% in most of Europe. In China, it will happen in 2024 only.

Germany:
December 2022 = 33.3% BEV and 22.2% PHEV
Full-year 2022 = 17.7% BEV and 13.7% PHEV

UK:
December 2022 = 32.9% BEV and 6.5% PHEV
Full-year 2022 = 16.6% BEV and 6.3% PHEV

Improving public charging infrastructure is a major reason and gives confidence for new users to dip their toes.

Re: Europe is going Electric! EVs are seeing big market-share gains

Excellent news from Europe on BEV's ( pure EV's ) !

Europeans were initially going with PHEV's but now market has shifted, BEV's will easily overtake PHEV (plug in hybrids) India will not even see them in any substantial numbers, as it should be, as it was just a passing tech, which companies used because they could not manufacture pure Electric platforms soon enough.

Europe and China are way ahead in EV's (BEV) .
I think once customers know, they can charge at home, and its cheap, and have more choices on reliable (and cheap) EV's , smart customers know where to put the money !. They think long term, and not short term like strong hybrids and PHEV's.

2023 will bring many new entrants to European market like BYD, NIO, Xpeng, and Polestar, Volvo cars (owned by Geely) and many more Chinese brands who would be eager to show the Europeans their latest technology and battery advances. Tesla will surely have more competition in 2023, and 2024 !. But that's good news for customers.

let's see how it plays out !
One thing for sure, Europeans are switching to clean energy and renewables like wind, solar on massive scale, which will also power their Grid ( and also EV's)

On a serious note, if the intention of the government is really to move to a greener transportation model and lower oil import bills, they would abandon this nonsense ethanol blending plan and start straight with a more serious EV plan. But hey this is the government, no point expecting them to have long term vision where it doesn't benefit them, I suppose!

Re: Europe is going Electric! EVs are seeing big market-share gains

Europe officially passes 2035 ban on new petrol and diesel cars.

After years of reviews, the European Union has formally banned the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2035 – though some could live on with the help of new technology.

Re: Europe is going Electric! EVs are seeing big market-share gains

Germany threatens to hold up EU's combustion-engine.

Germany’s transport minister said Tuesday that his country won’t back a planned European Union ban on the sale of new cars with combustion engines from 2035, after failing to get assurances from the bloc’s executive for an exemption on synthetic fuels.

Italy to vote against EU plan to ban thermal engine cars.

Italy intends to vote against European plans to outlaw the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in 12 years.

Quote:
Tomorrow in Brussels, at the meeting of ambassadors of EU countries, Italy will express a position against the proposed European regulation banning the production and sale of cars and vans with internal combustion engines by 2035.

Re: Europe is going Electric! EVs are seeing big market-share gains

Renault changes plans and promises not to abandon gasoline engines.

Initial idea of selling only electric cars in Europe has been put aside,

Announced in 2022 as Renault's strategic plan for the future, the idea of selling only electric vehicles in Europe by 2030 has just been officially abandoned.
Quote:
According to the executive, the commercial strategy for the next 10 years has been revised and once again includes the production of vehicles equipped with traditional gasoline engines. According to Cambolive, the goal now will be to act on two fronts (combustion and electric) and cover all segments of the market.
Outside of Europe, the launch of hybrids is also on the cards. In Brazil, for example, the E-Tech Hybrid technology is being widely speculated for the Niagara pickup (successor to the Oroch) and for an unprecedented medium SUV that will hit the market by 2025.

Re: Europe is going Electric! EVs are seeing big market-share gains

BEVs and PHEVs had a great year in EU 2023.
EU bought around 2M EVs and 1M PHEVs in 2023 alone.

Tesla model Y was the best selling BEV, while Ford KUGA was the best selling PHEV.

Roughly around 40% of the total EU market together.

2024 will be very exciting with BYDs serious push in EU as well as ASEAN, MIDDLEEAST markets too
