Reuters: Apple could launch an electric car in 2024

According to a media report, Apple could launch an electric car in 2024. The Apple EV is part of what is known as Project Titan. Following Bob Mansfield's retirement, the project is now headed by John Giannadrea, Senior Vice President for Machine Learning and AI strategy.

The EV is said to feature what is claimed to be the "next level" battery technology. The report states that the new battery technology could bring down the cost of batteries drastically. It would also increase the range of the vehicle. The battery is said to use a "monocell" design. It allows for more active material to be packed inside the battery, which would give the car additional range. Apple is reportedly examining lithium iron phosphate (LFP) for its battery.

The Apple EV might also have self-driving capability. It could use multiple LIDAR sensors derived from Apple's internally developed LIDAR units.

Whatever might be the battery even the car will use the 'lightning cable' to charge!

So Tesla lost its spot as the most valuable car company in the world on the day it was included in the S&P500

Whoa! I read the title & thought it might be a mere rumour, but since Reuters has reported the same, I'll sort of believe it.

Still, even if the news is true, Apple will not be building cars & selling them the conventional way. The auto business is way too capital intensive, complex and has slim profit margins...not really something that Apple (or its shareholders) would be keen on.

Let's see. Maybe Apple will sell its technology to other car makers? Or they will target an extremely profitable niche?

Elon Musk says he had once reached out to Apple to see if it would acquire Tesla, it was during dark times for Tesla Model 3 but Tim Cook had refused to meet.

Elon Musk said monocell, which Apple plans to use in its design, is electrochemically impossible as max voltage is ~100X too low unless they are bonded together.

Two variants are planned. One without Apple Car Play will cost one kidney. The higher end version with apple Car Play will cost two kidneys. This is for the white car. If you want any other color of choice, you will be charged one lung too as extra.

But the bigger question is, will the battery and charging cable be included with the car?

Let's hope Apple brings some disruptive technology to the EV segment just like it did with the original iPhone.

Re: Reuters: Apple could launch an electric car in 2024

Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has claimed that the launch of Apple Car is unlikely to happen until 2025-2027.

Kuo said that Apple Car specifications have yet to be finalised, adding that he would not be surprised if the vehicle's launch timeframe is pushed out even farther to 2028 or later.

Kuo cites three main issues with Apple Car: uncertainty about the launch timing, uncertainty about the supplier and vehicle specs, and uncertainty around Apple's competitiveness in the EV and self-driving car market.

Quote:
The analyst further suggested investors avoid buying Apple Car-related stocks at this time stating that the market is "overly bullish" about the Apple Car's launch schedule.

The analyst had predicted a couple of years ago that the Apple Car would launch in 2023-2025. But as per his latest survey, the current development schedule of Apple Car is not yet clear and even if its development starts this year and goes as per plan.

Apple accelerates work on car project, aiming for Fully Autonomous Vehicle. Company looks to refocus project on self-driving capabilities.

New car chief Kevin Lynch pushing for debut as early as 2025.

Quote:
For the past several years, Apple’s car team had explored two simultaneous paths: creating a model with limited self-driving capabilities focused on steering and acceleration -- similar to many current cars -- or a version with full self-driving ability that doesn’t require human intervention.

Re: Reuters: Apple could launch an electric car in 2024

While I am personally very excited for Apple to launch an EV car, IMHO the launching of a passenger car is completely a different ball game from that of launching a mobile phone or a tablet.

Typically the launch of smartphones and tablets from Apple is shrouded in secrecy and tech enthusiasts and the media play along very nicely building the excitement around these launches. Apple has perfected this art over a decade or so.

Probably, the same cannot be said of passenger cars - given the host of statutory requirements, safety aspects, live tests across geographies in different environmental conditions, the evolving technologies (especially around the battery tech) etc. to be complied before the actual launch. May be we are looking at a very long timeline from now - perhaps north of 2025?

As such, I presume what worked for Apple on smartphones may not work for passenger cars. The smartphone manufacturing can be outsourced -but, can they outsource the entire car manufacturing? If that's doable, then, probably the Daimlers and VWs would already be doing it to catchup with TSLA.

PS: I am a crazy Apple fanboy
