Re: Tesla's Indian factory to be set up in Karnataka

Its definitely not going to be a gigafactory. At best it would be a CKD operation with kits coming from China. Either ways, Tesla has to be serious about India to even commit to that sort of an investment. What also needs to be kept in mind though is that Tesla automatically also means solar cells and storage batteries. With our tropical weather, the roofs of most houses could easily be used to install solar panels which could also charge the car essentially driving for free. Lets see what Tesla has in store.

Heard from a friend that Tesla has given a mandate to them to source around 2000 staff (they have given the same mandate to a few other companies) around the Apple(Winstron) Plant area. So looks like an assembly unit.

The battery pack in Tesla model 3 LR is ~500kg @ 2% lithium in one car will be 10kg.

1600tonnes = 16,00,000 kg = 1,60,000 cars

I said 2 lakh cars if you bring some TM3 SR+ cars into the calculation.

Re: Tesla's Indian factory to be set up in Karnataka

Politicians are quick to make announcements without any basis in reality. I hope Tesla sets up a manufacturing unit in India, but am not holding my breath.
I recall several years back when the then-CEO of Intel was visiting India, and was asked if the company would build a factory here. His reply was that they would think about it.
The next day there were headlines in some newspapers to the effect “Intel to set up chip manufacturing in India”.

Re: Tesla's Indian factory to be set up in Karnataka

I believe part of the decision to launch in India is influenced by huge number of road infra projects announced/in-progess across the country. Those combined with Tesla range and charging stations should make these cars practical for long distance.

Manufacturing in INdia also gives a lower cost for global exports even if the localization is not high.

Possibly not in the case of Tesla as their plants are highly automated and the manual interventions required contributes little to the cost when we look at overall picture.

Re: Tesla's Indian factory to be set up in Karnataka

Govt of Karnataka has also announced a couple of times about Rajesh Exports (Bangalore based gold refiner and gold jewellery exporter) investing in a multi billion dollar battery production unit in Dharwad. Land seems to be already allotted to Rajesh Exports for it. Whether it is a genuine project of a dreamer or just noise, only time will tell. Hopefully it is not a massive scam in making.

India ready to give incentives to make Tesla's production cost less than China

Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari has said that India is willing to offer incentives to US EV giant Tesla to make sure than its cost of production in the country is cheaper than that in China.

The minister's pitch comes weeks after the electric major registered itself in the country as Tesla India Motors and Energy Pvt Ltd in mid-January and also appointed three directors to lead its India arm. "The government will make sure the production cost for Tesla will be the lowest when compared with the world, even China, when they start manufacturing their cars in India. We will assure that," Gadkari said in an interview with Reuters.

Reports suggested that the EV maker plans to import the vehicles to the country and sell them via direct sales strategy. "Rather than assembling (the cars) in India they should make the entire product in the country by hiring local vendors. Then we can give higher concessions," Gadkari was quoted as saying.

A latest Bloomberg report stated that the EV maker is closing in on an agreement to make electric vehicles in India for the first time. The report further stated that the automaker has been negotiating with local officials for six months and is actively considering car assembly in the suburbs of Bangalore.

Re: Tesla's Indian factory to be set up in Karnataka

I thought considering the brand value it has and the potential target market in India, Tesla will go the online route for sales. Anyway, a good move by them as a lot of us Indians still prefer the 'Touch & Feel Factor.'
