BAIC EU5 R500 Electric Sedan spotted undisguised in India

Beijing Automotive Industry Corp’s (BAIC) EU5 R500 electric sedan has been spotted undisguised in West Bengal, India.

The blue touches on the badging denote that it is an EV.

Both the headlight and tail light clusters are LED units, while there are LED DRLs at the front as well

Measuring 4650 mm long, 1820 mm wide, 1510 mm tall and with a 2670 mm wheelbase, the BAIC EU5 R500 has a 53.5 kWh battery pack that powers an electric motor which can produce 214.5 HP and 300 Nm

Available in 4 trim levels – Basic, Fashion, Comfort and Luxury – the EV comes with a claimed range of 416 km (top 2 variants have about 450 km range). It also has brake energy regeneration. DC charging time is a claimed 30 minutes to add 30-80 percent juice, while normal charging time (0-100 percent) is 9 hours.

The interior is a complete rip off from the previous gen A-Class hatchback and CLA, from the round aircon vents, touchscreen location, right till the wood trim! I guess the car is headed to Bhutan or Nepal.

BAIC makes cars for Mercedes Benz in China so these parts are most probably lifted straight out of Mercedes part bin.

Actually looks a lot like a Corolla to my eyes. Swap out the badge for a Toyota one and imagine it - exterior and the interior both.

Wonder what price segment this car falls under.Any pointers?

I just hope if they do land here, they get a CCS-2 port rather than GB/T as pictured. Last thing we need is a charging format war.

Having associated with some of these Automakers and Part suppliers in China, they do blindly copy (in their language, getting inspired) and reverse engineer from major Global Automakers. But the material and the product quality varies by a huge margin, they just need it to feel and look like its Original Counterpart. IMO only Geely was putting some thought into developing something of their own.

Lot of imports to Bhutan and Nepal pass through West Bengal as the nearest port of unloading is either Haldia or Kolkata.
It's quite a common sight to see Daihatsu's, Mazda's, Subaru's and HiLux's headed to our neighbouring countries.
As far as I know, till now BAIC has not made its intention public for entering the Indian market.
