Re: BMW i4 electric sedan revealed

I am looking for that day, the design department of BMW takes the prejudice off their heads that

Blue Accents = EV

and just reveal the cars of body colours with matching/contrasting/aesthetically pleasing accents. They are doing this from the first ever BMW i3 until today. Lesson (never) learnt.

Re: BMW i4 electric sedan revealed

Not a lot different from the concept. And finally, we have a real EV fully developed from the ground up by BMW! It will surely be an alternative for people who feel that the Tesla model 3’s interiors are too Spartan.

Re: BMW i4 electric sedan revealed

BMW design has reached peak retard when they put that stupid grill on a EV that doesn't even require a front grill.

EVs of course don't need the large grills that ICE vehicles need. From a design standpoint, it is quite easy for companies with a ground up design to integrate the grill less design into their vehicles (like Tesla). I think there is a separate thread on that discussion somewhere. However it does become a challenge for manufacturers who have built their entire design identity around their grill. Reducing the prominence of the frill or doing away with it all together will require a large leap of faith and also a significant rebranding exercise to shift focus from the grill!

That's the part I disagree with.

Surely the kidney grill is an integral part of BMW's design identity but BMW's design identity isn't built around the grill. Some nut job decided to make it seem that way and is getting away with it.

Even for argument sake, if the grill is defining BMW's design identity then I present you two rare examples. One from the internet archives and one from mine.

Coming to BMW EVs and the i4 in particular, IMHO BMW has an incredible opportunity to think differently and chart a new design direction. Imagine the possibilities of designing the coolest looking EV without the traditional grill? No. They hold on to the past and end up strapping a ridiculous looking grill that's neither functional nor aesthetic. What the hell is the purpose really?

Re: BMW i4 electric sedan revealed

BMW i4 M50 leaks out as an M-badged electric sedan.

BMW i4 electric sedan revealed-screenshot-20210520-165957.png

Quote:
Following a lengthy development process and an equally long teasing campaign, the BMW i4 was shown in production form in March this year. About a month later, during the Auto Shanghai 2021, the Bavarian company also unveiled the i4 M Sport. The brand is now getting ready for the debut of the i4 M50 and we might have an early sneak peek at the performance electric vehicle.
Quote:
The image you see here appeared on Instagram and was removed shortly after. We were quick to download it and here we are looking at what is most likely the new i4 M50 with a matte blue finish. As you can see, there’s an M badge on the front fascia which goes along with a number of visual upgrades.
Quote:
As BMW Blog points out, the electric sedan features some typical M Sport exterior components, including a more aggressive front bumper with larger air openings and wider side skirts in matte black. There’s also a new set of wheels with a multi-spoke design and diamond-cut finish with gloss black inners.
Quote:
All in all, this car looks even more aggressive than the i4 M Sport unveiled in China last month. The tech aspect remains a mystery, though, but we know the more powerful i4 will have 523 horsepower (390 kilowatts), enough for a 0-62 miles per hour (0-100 kilometers per hour) sprint in about four seconds. In terms of range, the battery will provide enough energy for much as 590 kilometers between charges measured by Europe's WLTP cycle and up to 300 miles of EPA-certified range.
Quote:
As for the lesser versions, reports suggest the model range will be complemented by two rear-wheel-drive variants, named i4 eDrive35 and i4 eDrive40. These two should have less power and possibly a reduced range between two charges. BMW Blog says the full debut of the i4 range is scheduled for June 1 this year when, hopefully, we will know more.

The M50's fifth-generation EV powertrain is largely shared with the iX. It consists of two electric motors: one on the front axle with 255bhp and another at the rear with 308bhp. Together, they develop a combined system output of 536bhp, or 33bhp more than the twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre straight six in the M3 Competition

2022 BMW i4 & i4 M50 electric sedan globally unveiled

BMW has unveiled their new i4 and i4 M50 electric sports sedans for the global markets. The new BMW i4 is the brand's first fully-electric sedan, with the i4 M50 being the performance-oriented version of the same.

The new BMW i4 carries forward a similar design as its fuel-powered M4 sibling. This includes the large kidney grille upfront. However, it now comes finished in a glossy black panel, along with blue highlights all around. Flanking the grille are a set of slim LED headlamps, with BMW's Laserlight offered as optional.

The side profile of the i4 is slightly larger than the standard 4 Series Coupe to accommodate the extra pair of doors. The new BMW i4 also features a sloping roofline and a set of stylish 19-inch alloy wheels (20-inch alloys offered as optional). The rear profile is mainly characterised by the LED tail lights. It also features blue highlights on the rear bumper.

Moving inside, the new BMW i4 comes with a completely new dashboard. It features a huge curved display, integrating the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with the new 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

The infotainment system comes powered by BMW's latest iDrive 8 software. It is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and also features over-the-air updates.

The BMW electric sedan will be offered in two versions - the i4 eDrive 40 and the i4 M50. The electric powertrain on the entry-level version produces 340 BHP and 430 Nm. The i4 is said to have a range of 590 km on a single charge (WLTP cycle) and is said to be capable of sprinting from 0 - 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds.

The more powerful i4 M50 variant will come with a dual electric motor setup, churning out 544 BHP and 795 Nm. The M50 variant is said to have a top speed of 225 km/h while accelerating from 0 - 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. The BMW i4 M50 will have a range of 510 km on a single charge (WLTP cycle).

Both variants, however, will come with a similar charging system. The electric sedan is said to feature fast-charging technology, capable of replenishing up to 80% of the batteries within 30 mins. It will also come with a standard 11 kW AC charger, which will charge the sedan overnight.

BMW has announced that the i4 and i4 M50 electric sedans will go on sale in international markets from November 2021.

Re: BMW i4 electric sedan revealed

Like for like, compared to Tesla Model 3 Performance that I am seriously looking at buying this year, its more than $40k more (thats AUD by the way) and is slower, has almost the same range and is nowhere near when it comes to technology.

I infact was asking myself, and wanted to start a poll on team bhp, would I be considering BMW even if it cost the same as Tesl? And I could not come up with a "yes". Same way if Tesla was another new ICE car manufacturer, I would buy the BMW or any XYZ eyes closed.
