Mumbai sees 115% jump in EV registrations in 2020-21

The number of registrations of electric vehicles in Mumbai during the year 2020-21, has risen by 115%. 1,442 vehicles including 90% two-wheelers were registered during the year compared to 672 in 2019-20.

Out of the total number of electric vehicles registered in the year, 885 were done between January and March 2021. The Tardeo RTO registered 463 with the Andheri, Borivali and Wadala RTOs registering 426, 321 and 232 vehicles respectively.

According to transport experts, it is the increasing cost of petrol and diesel that is responsible for the rise in the registrations of electric vehicles. While the price of petrol neared the Rs. 100 per litre mark, diesel is priced close to Rs. 90 per litre.

Electric cars are cheaper to run compared to cars with internal combustion engines. Besides, the government has encouraged the setting up of charging stations in building compounds, and at petrol pumps at subsidised rates.

Mumbai has also seen the gap between the numbers of registration of CNG and diesel vehicles narrowing. While the number of CNG vehicles registered stood at 10,363 units during the year, the number of diesel vehicles stood at 11,785 units. In 2019-20, the total number of CNG vehicles registered was 22,548 compared to 31,440 units for diesel vehicles. Fleet owners and aggregator cabs are now choosing CNG cars over diesel ones.

I think similar growth numbers were reflected on our EV two wheeler sales charts about a month ago. While these number are small for the size of our market, its encouraging to know people are trying something new. For minimum wage workers who need efficient, affordable personal transport, an EV on two wheels is the way to go. They can put aside or forget about uncontrolled fossil fuel pricing. They should cost next to nothing to maintain too.
