Mercedes-Benz is set to launch the EQS electric sedan in India. The vehicle has been listed on the brand's India website with the words "Coming Soon" mentioned next to it.



The EQS is the first model to be based on the EVA (Electric Vehicle Architecture) platform. It gets LED headlamps with integrated LED DRLs, connected together by an LED strip and LED taillights, again connected by an LED strip.

On the inside, it gets the brand’s latest Hyperscreen, making up the entire dashboard with three digital displays. These include the instrument cluster, the touchscreen infotainment unit and a third display for the front passenger.



In global markets, the Mercedes-Benz EQS will be available in two variants – EQS 450+ and EQS 580 4MATIC. Both are powered by a 107.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Mercedes-Benz claims that the EQS electric sedan will offer a maximum range of 770 km (WLTP Cycle) on a single charge and a top speed limited to 210 km/h.

The EQS 450+ comes with a rear-mounted electric motor producing 334 BHP and 458 Nm. The EQS 580 features dual electric motors (one at each axle) and churns out 523 BHP and 856 Nm.

Looks like Mercedes wants to spoil Tesla's entry into India! We can just hope that the technologies start to trickle down soon enough into something most of us can afford.

That's an awesome news! 770km of WLTP range along with green credentials might attract a few takers at 1.5 crore rupee mark. (assuming it will be launched at 100k GBP in UK) Very excited for this launch.

I suspect this car will do very well in our market. This is on my wishlist along with winning a lottery. I thought Porsche Taycan would be the first mainstream EV car from Europe to be launched in India but it just feels right that Mercedes gets that honour. I understand there have been few notable EV launches including EQC by MB but I think EQS will be taken much more seriously by both customers and also Mercedes Benz. I wish them luck.

Edit: it's funny that MB and BMW seem to be the most committed and engaged foreign automotive brands in India while even the mass market brands like Honda, Ford, VW, Toyota do not inspire confidence among customers about their commitment to our market.

I think I would place a bet on 1.99cr or 1.79cr for the entry level variant. The 223 is yet to arrive in our market yet so that has to sit around the 1.4-1.5cr pricing. It is technologically a huge leap from the 222 so the 223 will sit in the 1.5cr range. The EQC which is far more basic and on an older platform was 1cr here. So I can easily move my bet upwards of my current one and not lower for sure. As far as I understand, any EV irrespective of price would get some tax benefits etc which might bring the OTR of the car down compared to the S class, but dont expect MB to pass that benefit to the customer else the 223 wont sell. I am sure that a prospective 223 buyer wont be someone who would always want to use the range of a ICE powered car and hence the EQS with a real world range of approx 500kms would be equally suitable.

Checked with a friendly dealer here, it's not coming soon, not until at least Q3 2022.

Mercedes-Benz evaluating local assembly of EQ models in India.



Mercedes will launch the flagship EQS sedan in India next year. Company evaluating electrified models in lower segments as well. Local assembly of EQ models also on the cards.

Martin Schwenk, MD and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India said that the EQS is a “strong possibility for the brand” in India. “I have actually no doubt that it (EQS) will be (launched) in many markets, and India could be one of them as well,”

We have not finally decided ‘when’ and ‘what’, but we will, for sure, take something (from the global EQ line-up) and also look into the possibility of local production,”

The EQS is unlike any other Mercedes-Benz ever put together in India.



- EQS production to require dedicated assembly line and manpower training
- S-Class is for the chauffeur-driven, but EQS will be a “driver’s car”
- EQS will attract considerably lower taxes than the S-Class

The EQS needs a different approach since it’s a high-tech product. As such, the company will be upgrading its manufacturing set-up to accommodate the EQS.

Martin Schwenk, MD and CEO, Mercedes-Benz said, Considering production, the EQS is a new animal.

The focus is to come with a car which we can sell in relevant numbers – something that gets it out of the niche and brings it into the mainstay,” commented Schwenk.

Mercedes-Benz will launch the EQS in India on August 24.

Launch model will be the AMG EQS 53(580 & 450+ will follow). Also, 53 will be first all-electric AMG in India.

The locally assembled EQS 580 will arrive around October.

For anyone in the market for S-Class, 7-Series or A8, this is a no brainer if their usage range is less than 250km, economically as well as comfort wise. It is very refreshing to see major OEMs launching their flagship EVs in India.
