Tesla Roadster capable of 0-100 km/h in 1.1 seconds!

Tesla announced the second-generation Roadster almost three years back. However, over the years the company has repeatedly delayed the electric sports car citing various reasons. The latest reports though do suggest that the Tesla Roadster is finally expected to enter production in 2022.

In line with this, Tesla recently displayed the prototype of the Roadster at the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles. While there were no significant changes to the design or interiors of the car, the plaque placed in front of the EV seemed to catch a lot of attention.

The sign provided certain details of the upcoming Tesla Roadster, along with a few claims. According to this sign, the car will receive a SpaceX performance package, allowing the EV to accelerate to 100 km/h in just 1.1 seconds.

The Tesla Roadster is said to be powered by lightweight lithium-ion batteries with its 'Plaid' powertrain. This will feature one electric motor on the front axle and two electric motors at the rear. The Roadster without the SpaceX performance pack will still have an impressive 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 1.9 seconds.

However, Tesla is yet to make any official statement regarding the upcoming Roadster or its acceleration claims.

Now they are just pushing against the laws of physics but I am not sure this would even be achievable in the real world. Getting to 100 in 1.1 seconds will require significantly more power to get over all that inertia and traction will be a huge factor as well.

I'll believe this when it actually gets tested in the real world!

Unless the SpaceX package involves some form of jet propulsion, it should be able to do 100-0 in similar time too. At least in theory.

In addition to this, I'm also wondering what kind of an effect it'll have on the human internal soft organs and inner ear if it does have that kind of an acceleration.

If there is a risk of brain injury during an accident, when the car stops from 100 to 0 in a moment, why not when it reaches 0 to 100 in a second. I agree a moment is much smaller time than a second, but still.

Can tires hold their grip for such an acceleration ?

Elon Musk took to Twitter to confirms the same, 0-60 mph in 1.1 second for Roadster with SpaceX package

Well, I read that Formula Rossa - the rollercoaster ride at Ferrari world Abu Dhabi goes to 0-100 km/hr in 2.0 seconds with 1.7g during the acceleration. I've done that ride and it was fine, so I am assuming that a 0-100 km/hr time of 1.1 second would certainly be fine as well though possibly a bit disorienting. As with Elon Musk's tweet shared by Venkatesh (quoted below) says, it will be intense. Worst case scenario, we'll probably have people getting disoriented and a possibly with some vomiting unless they have a heart condition its probably best to stay away from this car.

Re: Tesla Roadster capable of 0-100 km/h in 1.1 seconds!

It's not possible to get a 0-100 time in the sub-2 seconds without rocket propulsion. Engineering Explained has a good video on this : And there are many others he's done talking about the same thing.

So I'm not surprised to see the clarification that it needs optional rocket thrusters to do so.

Grip will not be the limiting factor as rocket propulsion does not rely on traction for thrust. Just like we can push a hot wheels car to great speeds, a rocket will add speed over the electric motors which will be limited by the mechanical grip of the tyres.

I don't expect the propulsion part to be Street legal though! Hope to see it in action at some racetrack.

Hope it's not just an another gimmick to keep the hype alive.

Re: Tesla Roadster capable of 0-100 km/h in 1.1 seconds!

With that kind of acceleration, will it even be road legal, is the big question.

I wonder if the Space X pack would include body kit too like spoilers, fins like a fighter jet (in case of induced levitation) , special/different rubber for tyres, special break pads/parachute for stopping and suspension etc..

+1

The Formula Rossa does 0-240 kilometres/hour in 4.9 seconds. I have done it too, twice, one after the other. I recommend the first row seat for the best experience.

This car would be a real blast for the enthusiast with deep pockets for sure. Main issue I see with this, nowhere is it going to be possible to go maximum attack anyplace besides a clear race track.

Cheers

Off topic here, sorry for that since I could not find a Tesla roadster thread.

Does anyone feel that the front profile looks similar to the lykan hypersport? Correct me if I am wrong

The looks seem to be heavily inspired by the Ducati Supersport bikes.

Re: Tesla Roadster capable of 0-100 km/h in 1.1 seconds!

I don't find this very encouraging for a road version car. There are already folks abusing the self-driving function over in California which is being discussed in this post (Bad Drivers - How do you spot 'em). The last thing we need to see is folks testing these insane acceleration times on the road and losing control of the vehicle. Also riding a roller coaster is different from handling and operating a vehicle on road. A roller coaster is set on a fixed track that goes around the same route/pattern over and over again without any input from the passengers. However driving a car is different as not everyone can handle such insane acceleration in case they wish to do so. The real question is do we need cars like this on the roads and whether such cars should be limited to the track.

Three words come to mind after reading this.
W.O.W.

Anyone knowledgeable enough to work out the G forces? How does that fare to F1 cars? Would the driver need to wear a pressure suit, like the one fighter jet pilots wear?

On a more practical note, I am presuming the only place where these cars can truly be unleashed would be a race track. Wonder if it comes with specialised tyres to handle all the massive de/acceleration
