Re: Now, VW wants to charge owners $9 per hour for self-driving tech

This is the inevitable future. The takeover by software will ultimately lead to the entry of financial analysts who will advise the OEMs on how cars should be built, based on what their machine learning models throw up about usage patterns. When you go to the showroom to buy a car, be prepared with all your own financial analysis on rent vs buy, full charge vs limited, mind vs heart... wait, you will not even get to buy a car, because the last OEM left that is offering a car for sale would have thrown in the towel in favour of subscription only model under investor pressure.

This is the revenge of non drivers who have for years wondered why we fuss over things like low end torque and steering feedback when the whole point of life is just to get from point A to point B

Driving as we know it would be non existent in a decade or 2. Subscription based services and all those sensors, tracking and autonomy means that the "owner" of a vehicle can lose access to the vehicle anytime.

I'm sensing a world where traffic authorities will be able to tap into your vehicles control and regulate your speed etc. Essentially, vehicles would be just a box to travel in like it was in the early days.

I wonder if auto enthusiasts who are pro-EV realize that there would be nothing to be enthusiastic about driving in a decade or 2.
