Swedish electric vehicle company Polestar (Nasdaq: PSNY) officially unveils the Polestar 3 electric SUV, a combination of Scandinavian minimalism and the basic ingredients of a sport utility vehicle that will define the SUV concept in the electric age. The Polestar 3 is not only a more relevant and responsible SUV, but also more attractive... and rightly so.
"The Polestar 3 is a powerful electric SUV that draws attention for its unmistakable Scandinavian design and excellent driving dynamics," said Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar. "It will be manufactured in the United States, which will allow us to increase our presence there. We are very pleased with this new addition to our product portfolio, which will contribute to our rapid growth."
The Polestar 3 is presented with a new aerodynamic profile that maintains the hallmark of an SUV, such as width and the feeling of power. It is the result of an aerodynamic optimization as subtle as it is effective, which includes a front spoiler integrated into the hood, a spoiler in the rear spoiler and rear spoilers.
The materials used in the interior of Polestar 3 have been selected for their sustainability, but also to enhance the aesthetics and the feeling of luxury. They include upholstery in ecological MicroTech fabric, leather with animal protection certificate and wool of proven origin. As required by Polestar's commitment to transparency, the Polestar 3 will undergo a comprehensive life cycle assessment (CVD) when production begins. Throughout its life cycle, new assessments will be carried out and we will not cease in our efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.
The Polestar 3 is polestar's first vehicle to carry NVIDIA DRIVE CPU computers and Volvo Cars software. The NVIDIA high-performance platform for the car is a true artificial intelligence brain. It processes data it receives from the vehicle's cameras and sensors to offer advanced safety and driver assistance features.
The infotainment system is based on an advanced Snapdragon Cockpit platform from Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. As a building block of the Snapdragon digital chassis, a broad set of open and scalable cloud platforms for the car, the powerful Snapdragon Cockpit platform will offer the driver immersive experiences such as high-definition displays, premium surround sound and connectivity throughout the vehicle.
With Volvo Cars entering a new era of safety, the Polestar 3 is born with Volvo Cars' most advanced active and passive safety technology. That includes the latest innovation: indoor radar sensors that can detect submillimeter movements inside the vehicle to prevent anyone from forgetting a child or pet inside the car. The system is also connected to the climate control to prevent heat stroke or hypothermia.
Thanks to the collaboration with leading security technology companies such as Zenseact, Luminar and Smart Eye, the Polestar 3 is equipped with the advanced ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) technology, perfectly integrated through the central computer.
The Polestar 3 comes standard with a total of five radar modules, five external cameras and twelve external ultrasonic sensors that are used for various advanced safety functions. The SmartZone located under the front wing brings together several of the forward-facing sensors, a heated radar module and a camera, now with the characteristic Polestar design. Inside, two closed-circuit cameras protect the driver with advanced Smart Eye visual tracking technology, which is used on a Polestar for the first time to increase safety while driving. The cameras track the movement of the driver's eyes and can trigger alert messages, sounds or even an emergency stop if they detect that the driver is distracted or drowsy.
The vehicle's operating system is Android Automotive OS, developed in collaboration with Google and whose visible face is a 14.5-inch central screen. This is a new evolution of the technology already used in the Polestar 2, the first vehicle in the world with Google integrated, and represents a real revolution of functionality and design for the important SUV segment. It includes OTA (Over-The-Air) updates that allow the continuous improvement of the software and the introduction of new functions without having to go to a service center.
At launch, the Polestar 3 will be equipped with a dual powertrain and more power at the rear. The standard model develops a total of 360 kW and 840 Nm of torque. With the optional Performance package, the total power increases to 380 kW and 910 Nm. It includes adjustable One-Pedal Drive and Electric Torque Vectoring Dual Clutch function on the rear axle, an evolution of what was developed for the Polestar 1. It also offers a decoupling function for the rear electric motor, with which the vehicle can run only with the front electric motor to save energy in some cases.
Advanced chassis control comes standard with dual air chamber suspension, which allows the Polestar 3 to operate on firm or soft suspension and adjust the shock absorbers electronically once every two milliseconds (500 Hz).
"Our goal was to deliver the performance and precision that characterise all Polestar vehicles, but without sacrificing the comfort of everyday driving," explains Joakim Rydholm, Chief Chassis Engineer at Polestar. "To achieve this we use new components, such as the adaptive air suspension, which give the 'Polestar touch' to this type of vehicle."
A 111 kWh battery pack guarantees the Polestar 3 a long range of up to 610 km WLTP[2] (preliminary data). The lithium-ion battery is designed with prismatic cells in an aluminum case with boron steel reinforcements and liquid cooling. The Polestar 3 comes standard with a heat pump that allows you to use ambient heat to condition the battery and climate control. It also has bidirectional charging that offers the possibility of connecting the vehicle to the grid in the future.
As in the Polestar 2, the standard equipment of the Polestar 3 is very complete and includes few options to facilitate configuration and simplify production logistics. All versions include air suspension, panoramic sunroof, indoor and outdoor LED lights, retractable door handles with proximity sensors, and 21-inch alloy wheels. During the first year, the Plus and Pilot packages will be included as standard with a large number of details as practical as luxurious, including a Bowers & Wilkins sound system with 25 speakers, 3D surround sound and Dolby Atmos technology, doors with muffled closure, HUD screen with projection on the windshield and Pilot Assist.
Starting in the second quarter of 2023, Luminar's optional Pilot LiDAR package will also include another NVIDIA control unit, three cameras, four ultrasonic sensors, and cleaning of the front and rear view cameras. This will make it possible to obtain real-time 3D data of the vehicle's environment, especially over long distances, opening the way to autonomous driving.
The optional Performance package further enhances driving dynamics and delivers maximum power (380 kW and 910 Nm), plus optimised air suspension, exclusive 22-inch forged alloy wheels and more details in the unmistakable "Swedish Gold".
The Polestar 3 is the first vehicle with a new 100% electric technology developed by Volvo Cars. Production is planned for the launch markets[3] start at Volvo Cars' factory in Chengdu, China with a progressive increment[3] from mid-2023. The first vehicles will be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2023.
By mid-2024 production will also begin at Volvo Cars' factory in Ridgeville, South Carolina. From that point on, supply for North America and other markets will shift from China to the United States. The first vehicles will leave this factory in mid-2024.
At the time of launch, the Polestar 3 Long Range Dual Motor (360 kW, 840 Nm) will have an indicative price of 89,900 euros[1] and you can start ordering online from October 12, 2022 in all launch markets[3
