Next-gen Volvo XC60 to be a pure-electric SUV; will not get IC-engine options in any capacity

Volvo is said to be working on the next-generation XC60 for the global markets. According to a media report, the new mid-size SUV will arrive in 2024 and will be offered with an electric powertrain.

The report states that the new-gen Volvo XC60 will be a pure electric SUV, with "combustion engines not being offered in any capacity". This decision is in line with Volvo's plan of becoming an EV-only brand by 2030.

While details of the next-gen Volvo XC60 are still scarce, reports do suggest that the SUV is expected to feature the brand's latest interior and safety technologies. This could even include semi-autonomous driving capabilities and other passive safety features.

Volvo recently announced a joint-venture with Swedish battery manufacturer, Northvolt. The JV between the two companies is said to produce 'state-of-the-art' battery technologies. The new-gen Volvo XC60 will be the first model to receive the battery cells developed by the joint-venture, which will go on to power other Volvo and Polestar products as well.

The joint venture between Volvo and Northvolt will also result in the setting up of a Gigafactory, in a yet-to-be-decided location in Europe. The plant will be capable of producing 50 GWh of cells per year - enough to power over 5,00,000 large EVs.

For a brand that is relatively small (compared to direct rivals), Volvo sure does make bold moves. Their commitment to safety, the 180 kmph speed limiter, dropping diesels altogether....the list goes on.

This too is a bold announcement as frankly, the demand for IC engines is still going to continue in many countries across the world (India included). Even in developed nations like USA, electric cars pose many challenges.

Big part of the electric push for Volvo comes from its Chinese parent. China - as a country and culture - is going absolutely all out on EVs. They missed the boat on petrol cars, but don't want the same to happen in electrics.

BOOM goes the Dynamite. Bold it indeed is.

XC60 PHEV is still one of the best as a compact family touring car. With Electric only, the 'touring' aspect blurs out.

Best case scenario would have been to leave the Pure EV's to Polestar and keep a ICE+ EV+PHEV line-up in Volvo. But then again, I can merely have opinions. I'm sure Volvo has this figured out.

Hearing about the XC60 going electric sure does remind me, why no love for estates!

No doubt SUVs are the hot stuff today, but their CrossCountry estates did blur the line between an SUV and Estates — a more aerodynamic package especially between the V60CC and XC60 since the XC90 did have third row option over the V90.

Also makes me recall this cute render of a Polestar 2 Estate. Am I the only one who admires an estate here?

As other users note, this push is likely linked to the Chinese Geely ownership but also, might I add, due to the fact that Scandinavians are also seeing huge EV push specially Norway.

Recently, the brand announced their partnership with Northvolt to develop and produce more durable batteries.

The first model to wear them has already been confirmed and it will be the successor to the current XC60.

Release planned in just over 2 years.

Given the popularity of the current combustion-engined XC60, Volvo is likely to keep it on sale for a period alongside the new EV.

Electric Volvo EX60 mid-size SUV due by 2026 as XC60 successor.

Volvo's best-selling model globally – the XC60 mid-size SUV – is due to be joined by an electric alternative by 2026, as the Swedish car maker prepares to ditch petrol power.

Quote:
The new model – all but confirmed to be badged EX60, in line with the larger EX90 and smaller EX30 SUVs – is planned to initially be sold alongside the current XC60 in overseas markets, as they phase out petrol power.

it is planned to be the first Volvo model to benefit from batteries designed in partnership with Swedish company Northvolt.
