Volvo Concept Recharge previews the brand's new design for its next-gen EVs

Volvo has globally unveiled its 'Concept Recharge', giving us a preview of the brand's new design language for its future EV lineup.

Volvo stated that the new design language has been custom-built for electrification, without accommodating IC engines. The new generation of Volvo EVs will come with completely new proportions featuring a flat floor, longer wheelbase and shorter overhangs at either end. The upcoming EVs will also come with a lowered bonnet and a redesigned roof, optimising aerodynamics.

As seen from the images, the Volvo Concept Recharge features a 'shield-like structure' at the front, in place of the traditional grille. This helps accentuate the newly designed 'Thor Hammer' LED headlamps upfront. The side and rear profile also carry forward minimalistic styling, in line with Volvo's new design philosophy 'less is better'.

The new design philosophy is applicable to the interiors as well. The new proportions on the Concept Recharge, along with the flat floor, offers more space and better seating positions for all passengers.

The concept car also showcases a massive 15-inch stand-alone touchscreen display at the centre. This is expected to come packed with Volvo's latest connected technology, along with a host of other features. Volvo will also introduce LiDAR sensors in its EVs in the future, as part of its autonomous driving technology.

The unveiling of the Concept Recharge is in line with Volvo's plans of going fully electric by 2030. The Swedish carmaker had announced earlier this year that it plans to discontinue IC-engines and hybrid powertrains from its lineup, transitioning into an EV-only brand by the end of the decade.

Looks odd. Especially the extremely high window line and the tiny windows.

I do understand, that it is a concept after all & production models could be a bit more digestible.

What's this obsession with the Teslafication of the interiors? They look absolutely appalling. You'd think the swedes would do a better job with Nordi Minimalism if that's the look they want to go for.

Looks different enough to spark an interest. But those alloys (or whatever they are) are an abomination!

Looks a little bit like their CrossCountry wagons if you ask me. Appears closer to a V90CC wagon than their XC90 SUV.

Concepts are wonky sometimes though, and the abrupt end at the D pillar instead of a more aerodynamic slope might be hindering from seeing the wagon in this render.

Start from 1:00 to hear Mr. Robin Page, head of design explain in detail.

The center console reminds me of Tesla. The headlamp however is true to it's Thor's hammer style that are in use with their current models. The vehicle does look reasonably big and spacious. However most of the design elements rarely makes it to the production spec. Hope this car turns out to be appealing and priced well.

Volvo to give next-generation EVs names rather than numbers.

Hakan Samuelsson has confirmed that Volvo would diverge from its long-running XC nomenclature for SUVs by giving the new car “a name, like a child”.
