It sure looks like a hatchback, but the dimensions speak otherwise. For comparison,

Hyundai IONIQ 5:
Height, 1625 mm, Width, 1890 mm; Length, 4635 mm; Ground clearance, 160-168 mm; Wheelbase, 3000 mm;

BYD Atto 3:
Height, 1615 mm, Width, 1875 mm; Length, 4455 mm; Ground clearance unladen, 175 mm; Wheelbase, 2720 mm;

It’s bigger than the Atto 3 in all aspects expect ground clearance. Crazy right?!

I expected the car to be similar in size to a normal crossover. But boy I was wrong. It is almost a full size SUV hiding it's sheer scale by the clever design. I took only one picture during the whole test drive visit and that is to show the sheer scale of Ioniq 5. To the right is a Hyundai i20.

For the sake of it, here is a comparison with an X3 & Q5:

It's a nice comparison with regard to their performance.

BYD Atto 3 vs Hyundai Ioniq 5

1. 60 kWh vs 72 kWh battery pack
2. 201bhp/310 nm vs 214 bhp/350 nm Torque
3. 521 km vs 631 km range

For that you pay an additional 11 lakhs.! The range differentiation is a big factor. Although real world difference has to be seen.

The other big factor is the charge support- the BYD tops out at 80kw whereas the Hyundai can go upto 350 KW making it more future proof.

2720mm wheelbase vs 3000mm (that's as much as an A8).

The Ioniq is in a different league of car for space and comfort, comparing those numbers barely makes sense.

So you are saying that I did not do a trip from Bengaluru to Udupi/Pondicherry/Thanjavur/Pune/etc. on my Nexon EV?

Just open plugshare website, and you will see loads of DC fast chargers and that number is ever increasing.

Re: Driving Impressions : Hyundai Ioniq 5

Ioniq 5 that is going to be sold here is the older 72.6kwh battery version and charges at a max rate of 221kw DC, the newer version sold else where has a 77.4kwh battery and charges at max rate of 233kw DC.

So I guess the Electric Bus chargers out there can charge the Ioniq 5 and EV6 at its max charging speed. But I doubt the Bus operators would allow them to use the chargers.

All the press and websites are incorrect when they say the Kia EV6 and Ioniq 5 can charge at 350kw, when infact it cannot charge at that speed.

Well done on your trip, did you charge at 800v DC anywhere ?
________
I don’t see why EV owners are getting so defensive about my comment on Hyundai’s marketing pitch when infact it is to everyone’s benefit if car makers provide us with accurate and relevant information. Sure it’s good to know the future capabilities but why side line the realities. I don’t think they even mentioned what AC wall box charger they will provide with the car and how long will charging take on that!

11kW charger (which is free and will be installed at parking spot) will take 6h55m according to the brochure. They haven't mentioned the time taken using the 3kW charger.

But they have mentioned that a 50kW charger will take 57 mins but that is for 10% to 80% charge not 0 to 100.

Mod Note: Our Hyundai Ioniq 5 Auto Expo Report has been taken live at this link. Please continue the discussion over on the new thread. Thanks!
