Govt. exempts EVs from registration certificate fees

Electric vehicles (EV) will not be required to pay fees for the renewal of their registration certificates. This has been announced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways through a notification.

The notification states that Battery Operated Vehicles (BOVs) will be exempted from the payment of fees for the issue or renewal of registration certificate and assignment of new registration mark. The move is expected to encourage the use of electric vehicles.

The Government of India has announced various sops and exemptions for EVs in the past as well. In order to boost EV sales, the government has waived off registration charges and numerous subsidies are being provided under the FAME-II scheme over and above the benefits offered by the state governments.

If I have understood https://parivahan.gov.in/parivahan/e...s-user-charges correctly, this means a grand saving of 1000/-

Welcome Move. Government should give more incentives for EV's. I would be great if government give subsidy for Electric two-wheelers for working women (Such scheme for general two-wheeler was there in TN last year).
This will make many to switch to EV's

This 'small' incentive may not be substantial for a buyer in rupee terms.

However, this type of activity of doling out small incentives every now and then, has creating a feeling/hype in the mind of prospective buyers, that EVs are somehow being offered at very cheap prices, with more benefits & SOPs to come.

These baby steps coming from the Indian government are proving to be quite useful in building a general public sentiment increasingly in favour of migration to EVs. It will definitely take time for the EV ecosystem to be firmly established in India, but any initiative in that regard is a welcome move. Let's hope we get to see more electric offerings from automobile manufacturers; thereby making the segment a little more affordable than what the current scenario is.

They should say no GST, No Registration charges, NO cess, no road tax while buying an electric car, just get the insurance and you are done.

These chillar changes are all for news paper headlines which is the only thing they are good at, baaki a big anda from head to toe.

Most of these changes you have mentioned fall under the State's purview. While many state's afre showing foresight and are also adding on top of central govt. sops, some khadoos ones like Kerala fleece EV owners just like any other IC powered automobile.

High time the nation gets uniform road transport legislature.

The main incentive that will drive OEMs is GST cuts for hybrid/EV technologies for a period of say, 5-7 years. Again , hybrid technologies have to be defined appropriately to avoid it being misused through the "mild hybrid" jargon.

Re: Govt. exempts EVs from registration certificate fees

The registration fees charged by most states/ UT's for the ICE automobiles are in the region of a few hundred rupees, whereas the road tax comprises a major chunk calculated at a determined percentage of the ex-showroom price, except in Chandigarh, Jharkhand and Gujarat where automobile price before adding up the GST is used to calculate road tax.

Nevertheless, exemption from payment of road tax as notified by the Road Transport Ministry is an encouraging step to prop up the EV sales.

But there is a rider here. The states and UT's have their say as far as the fee levy/payments for all types of road vehicles including registered/ to be registered vehicles are concerned. It is only an advisory from the Centre that states/UT's would or would not follow.

The Seventh Schedule, Article 246 entry 57 of List II (State List) of the Constitution of India delegates the power to levy taxes on vehicles of all kinds to the states.

Quote:

57. Taxes on vehicles, whether mechanically propelled or not, suitable for use on roads, including tramcars subject to the provisions of entry 35 of List III.
The entry 35 of List III (Concurrent List) quoted here below. Principles on which taxes on such vehicles are to be levied are usually proposed by the Centre and hence this provision is in the Concurrent List.

Quote:

35. Mechanically propelled vehicles including the principles on which taxes on such vehicles are to be levied.
