Hyundai & Kia to introduce 6 electric cars by 2024

Hyundai and Kia have reportedly lined up six new electric cars for the Indian market. These EVs will cater to different segments of the market and are likely to be introduced in the next 3-years.

At present, the Kona EV is Hyundai's only all-electric offering in India. The second model is likely to be the Ioniq 5.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 (2023)

The Ioniq 5 is based on the E-GMP platform. It comes with a 58 kWh battery pack that powers a 168 BHP electric motor. The all-wheel-drive version packs 297 BHP and comes with a larger battery pack. Depending on the battery pack, the car can cover 385 km or 481 km on a single charge (WLTP cycle).

Kia EV6 (2022)

The EV6 shares the same modular electric architecture as the Ioniq 5. It too comes with two battery options and a dual-motor configuration. The peak output is 317 BHP and 605 Nm. The AWD version offers a maximum range of 510 km. The EV6 GT is the top-of-the-line version with 577 BHP and 740 Nm.

Both the Ioniq 5 and EV6 will be imported as completely built units (CBU).

Kia e-Niro (2023)

The e-Niro is Kia's version of the Kona EV. It uses the same 39.2 kWh battery to power an electric motor that produces 134 BHP. This variant offers a range of 289 km. The e-Niro also gets a larger 64 kWh battery option which has a range of 455 km. It powers a 201 BHP electric motor.

The updated Kona EV is expected to be launched in 2022. Both cars will be imported via the CKD route.

Mass-market EVs (2024)

A new mass-market EV based on a low-cost skateboard platform is also under development. It will be offered by both Hyundai and Kia in the sub- Rs. 15 lakh price bracket.

The mass-market EVs will be heavily localized to keep costs down and are likely to offer a maximum range of around 200-220 km.

Re: Hyundai & Kia to introduce 6 electric cars by 2024

This is news is so encouraging. Since I live in Delhi NCR (Noida to be precise), I am totally clueless on whether to go for petrol diesel car or wait for real EV's to show up. If any of these show up south of 30 lakhs with a run of 350-400KMs(my daily drive is 80KMs and on
highways, I hardly drive for more than 3 hours before taking break) on single charge, I am all in.

Kia e-Niro (rhymes with Robert De Niro ) looks a bit like the Late Ford Figo:

The Kia EV6 looks absolutely terrific and can go 0 to 60 mph in 4.82 seconds! Remember the guy who took his electric scooter to his apartment kitchen? With the EV6, you can plug your Microwave Oven into it:

But the problem in India is the Charging Infrastructure. Forget charging points on highways and remote areas, even the flat societies are unwilling to install charging points for few families:

Re: Hyundai & Kia to introduce 6 electric cars by 2024

Indeed encouraging and also confusing when one is ready to buy a petrol car, XUV700 I meant. I think I will swing to EV when I know it gives 600 kms range, long enough to travel to my native in one charge. Last year I thought it would take minimum 8 yrs for such a car and affordable of course to be in the mass market. But now I think EVs will be more common in 3 to 4 yrs. I hear Mahindra is planning for an XUV700 EV. Not sure when it is hitting the roads.

Re: Hyundai & Kia to introduce 6 electric cars by 2024

Due to the Ioniq 5 and EV6 being CBU units, they will be very expensive and since electric cars are already expensive to boot, they will become unaffordable for many. The Kia e-Niro and the mass-market ev will be affordable but not compelling because of the limited range.

Hyundai to launch six EVs in India by 2028.

The Korean auto major will invest Rs 4,000 crore to develop dedicated EV- as well as ICE-derived platforms in India.

the mass-market EV which will launch before the end of 2024 and will be built here using an existing ICE platform. “Some IC-derived EVs are also going to come, probably three would be IC-derived BEVs,” these more affordable EVs would still have a range of 350km.

Apart from providing a 7.4kW AC home charger to customers, Hyundai has also set up public 50kW DC fast charging stations in four cities (with Indian Oil), installed AC fast chargers at 108 dealerships in 15 cities (free for Hyundai customers) and is providing a 24x7 road side assistance pan-India, along with a vehicle-to-vehicle and portable charging solution for its EV customers in six cities (free for three years).

Re: Hyundai & Kia to introduce 6 electric cars by 2024

An EV, that offers 350-400 KM real world range and in the price bracket of 15-20L is a great sweet spot. If this is combined with reliable highway charging infra every100 kilometres will tilt the equation in favour of EV for those aspiring to buy ICE SUVs.

Another range of EVs in the price brackets of 8L-13L with a real world range of 250KM primarily for city run will actually trigger mass adoption.

As the prices come down for Li-Ion batteries and evolving battery tech, I foresee the above happening in India within couple of years' time from now.

Finally, the biggest shift will happen (I guess it is already underway in some way) when the two-wheelers, auto rickshaws, and 3-wheelers that do last mile deliveries convert to EVs.

Re: Hyundai & Kia to introduce 6 electric cars by 2024

Hyundai Ioniq 5 can cover 488 km on a single charge

The US EPA has released the estimated range for the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5. The agency has concluded that the electric car can cover 488 km on a single charge.

Hyundai & Kia to introduce 6 electric cars by 2024-20210223062647_hyundai_ioniq_5_2022_front.jpg

The Ioniq 5 is based on Hyundai's E-GMP platform. The car is available in rear-wheel drive and all-wheel-drive configurations. The rear-wheel-drive, long-range models have the highest range.

The Ioniq 5 comes with two battery options - 58 kWh and 72 kWh. The single-motor version packs 211 BHP and 350 Nm, while the dual-motor setup generates 298 BHP and 605 Nm and is claimed to reach 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds.

Hyundai and Kia plan to introduce six electric cars in India by 2028. The Ioniq 5 is likely to be one of them. It was showcased earlier this year and could go on sale in 2023.

Re: Hyundai & Kia to introduce 6 electric cars by 2024

An EV with 300-350 kms range is more than enough.
What we really need is -
1. Technology to produce batteries using easily available materials (like sodium-ion) to keep cost and material scarcity at bay.
2. Ability to charge 50% of the battery capacity in 10-15 minutes .
3. Good charging infrastructure.
4. Usage of renewable energy to power the charging stations.

Kia has registered the EV6 trademark in India.

The Kia EV6 is built on the Hyundai Motor Group's new E-GMP platform, it shares a lot with its Hyundai sibling the Ioniq 5.

Re: Hyundai & Kia to introduce 6 electric cars by 2024

Kia, while it is already proven aggressive and committed to India, is again not taking any chances and wants no stones unturned.

Given the specs (especially that 700+ km range), is definitely a transformational and disruptive product for India. Hope it comes with a competitive price tag as well, (Probably 30-35 lakhs ONR) will be a deal-breaking positioning.

Well it is ~530km WLTP certified range for the 77.4kWh battery rear wheel drive model which is also plenty, in my opinion. Pricing can be a bit on steeper side, say ₹50 lakh if it comes as a CBU however they can have good pricing if it comes as a CKD.

This is one EV that I am keenly watching. It has all the makings of a success. The looks, specifications, range, charging time. It is very encouraging to see EV technology maturing at such a fast pace.

Pricing will be 50 lakhs minimum for the base variant as Kia is bringing it as CBU. For CBU cars with CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) less than $40,000 there is 60% import duty. For cars above $40,000 CIF, import duty is 100%.

So, for the base variant with smaller battery if CIF is $40,000 then the minimum price will be $40,000 x 0.6 = $64,000 = ~48 lakhs. It will be the same for Hyundai Ioniq 5 which is also CBU.

Kia and Hyundai are only bringing Kona and e-Niro as CKDs and they will most likely priced starting from Rs 25 lakhs which is similar to the current Kona.

Absolutely. My primary car change is now 6 years away at least but my secondary car will be in for a change in 3 years. If we can get an EV in this price range I will snap it in a heartbeat. Will be a perfect City car.

I love the commitment from Hyundai/Kia towards India. Only if Honda and Toyota start doing the same we can have some exciting choices.
