Rolls-Royce has announced that its latest product, the Spectre, will be a two-door coupe that is fully electric.





New Spectre EV to use Rolls-Royce’s modular 'Architecture of Luxury' platform.

Rather than using the Cluster Architecture (CLAR) platform that underpins parent company BMW's new i4 and iX EVs, Rolls-Royce is sticking with the modular 'Architecture of Luxury' aluminium spaceframe, used for the current Phantom and Cullinan, that will eventually underpin all Rolls-Royce models.

Details on what exactly will power the Spectre remain under wraps.

Torsten Muller-Otvos, CEO, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars said, “We would never use an existing car from the BMW Group and convert it into a Rolls-Royce. That doesn’t work for us.”

Production car to feature fastback design like the prototype.

We will hear more and more brands going all-electric in the next 2-3 years. They may be saying they will continue to develop and sell ICE vehicles and platforms along with EVs currently, soon they will realize, it's no longer economical to maintain multiple platforms especially with declining ICE sales and growing EV sales.

Other than both are British and Spectre, what does James Bond and Rolls Royce have in common?

Apart from the fact that it looks unmistakably familiar from front, the angles from side are more slanted (A-Pillar and bonnet) for the first time. This might be due to the fact Aero becomes even more important to extract more range from an EV.

Rolls-Royce Spectre to take Wraith's place in lineup when it arrives.

Rolls-Royce CEO, Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes, told "A coupe is very emotional car and for us, it was very important that we make a statement,"

The Spectre will take the place of the Wraith coupe in Rolls-Royce's lineup. "It is not in any way the successor of the Wraith. It's a different proposition for our clients. It will feel very different, it will look very different," Mueller-Oetvoes said.

Rolls-Royce has reimagined its iconic Spirit of Ecstasy figurine to grace the bonnet of its new all-electric motor car, Spectre, 111 years to the day the Spirit of Ecstasy was first registered as intellectual property of Rolls-Royce on 6th February 1911.

The figurine has been remodelled with a lower, more dynamic stance that brings her much closer to the drawings made by her original creator, the illustrator and sculptor Charles Sykes, in the early years of the 20th century

The new Spirit of Ecstasy stands 82.73mm tall, compared to her predecessor’s 100.01mm. Her robes, which flow behind her in the slipstream – often but erroneously characterised as ‘wings’ – have been subtly reshaped to make them more aerodynamic and realistic.

The most visible change is her stance. Previously, she has stood with her feet together, legs straight and tilting at the waist. Now, she is a true goddess of speed, braced for the wind, one leg forward, body tucked low, her eyes focused eagerly ahead.

The new version created for Spectre will appear on all future models: the current design will still be used on Phantom, Ghost, Wraith, Dawn and Cullinan and their Black Badge alter egos where applicable.

Rolls-Royce Spectre EV concludes winter testing.

Rolls-Royce has stated that the winter testing is the first stage of testing for any model they develop. The tests have been carried out at BMW’s facility in Arjeplog, Sweden – 55km out of the Arctic circle. Temperatures in the region range from -26 degC to -40 degC and Rolls-Royce does this extreme weather testing to ensure that all systems work at a basic level despite the external conditions.

The winter test only constitutes a quarter of the total testing this new luxury EV is going to go through. Rolls-Royce claims the model is set to go through 2.5 million km worth of testing prior to going into production.

Electric Rolls-Royce Spectre to be new-age Phantom coupe, will go on sale at the end of 2023.

In terms of styling, the split headlight design of the Phantom Coupé will return on the Spectre.

The new Spectre will have a 700kg battery mounted in a flat floor much of the work is ensuring the basic components – such as the windows, doors, heating and cooling, and rubber seals – work as they should in an extreme environment.

“We have 25 times more algorithms in this car. There are 1000 high-level functions with up to 25,000 sub-functions. There are 141,200 send and receive functions in this car, each with a tolerance of 25 milliseconds and they should not fail.” This is known as ‘RollsRoyce 3.0’ and refers to the firm’s new way of developing cars in its upcoming electric era.

Rolls-Royce has confirmed that the car will ride on 23in wheels in production

In total, some 2.5 million kilometres (about 1.55 million miles) of testing will be done and more than 30 prototypes will be built.

Müller-Ötvös said Rolls-Royce is already taking orders and deposits for the Spectre, including from people who are new to the brand.

All-Electric Rolls-Royce Spectre, is undergoing its second testing phase on the French Riviera.

Forming a crucial part of its 2.5m kilometre global testing programme, a total of 625k kilometres will be driven on and around the French Côte d’Azur.
