BMW XM Concept unveiled; Brand's first standalone M SUV with 750 BHP & 1000 Nm

BMW has unveiled its all-new XM concept SUV. The new BMW XM Concept is the brand's first standalone M SUV and is also the first product not to be based on any existing model. BMW says that the production version of the XM concept will be unveiled by end-2022.

The XM concept will be exclusively offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. This comes in the form of a V8 engine combined with an electric motor, capable of producing 750 BHP and 1000 Nm. The SUV is also said to have an all-electric range of 80 km. Once the XM enters production, it will become the most powerful BMW M model in the brand's history.

The BMW XM concept also previews the brand's new design direction for its future high-performance models. The XM concept features a large pair of kidney grilles up front, flanked on either side by the sleek LED lighting. The sides are characterised by the squared wheel arches housing the 23-inch alloys, while the rear features sleek LED taillights and the quad exhaust tips on either side of the diffuser.

On the inside, the BMW XM Concept has premium upholstery all around, along with plenty of carbon-fibre elements. There are also two large screens, one for the instrument cluster and the other being the touchscreen infotainment unit running on BMW's latest iDrive technology.

BMW’s M division will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2022 with only the second bespoke model in its history: the XM.

Honestly, what has gotten into BMW's design department of late? Looks like they are trying really hard to design the next 'ugliest car in the world' . How does a design as horrendous as this even get approved? The kidney grille is already big enough as it is on the 7-series and the X7. Seems like they've taken this meme to their hearts.

Even the big ugly grille jokes have gone stale -

BMW XM Concept unveiled; Brand's first standalone M SUV with 750 BHP & 1000 Nm-screenshot_20211130120001_instagram.jpg

Thankfully, this car isn't just about the ugly grille - it is ugly from almost every angle - the side and rear equally there too! Personally, I find this one of the worst designed concept car of recent times.

Finally BMW designers managed to bring out a concept where people won't focus on the big ugly grille anymore. This one is hideous from every possible angle, inside out!

Curious to know if there are any logical speculation on how such designs get out from studios to a real world, that too from the likes of BMW?

I fully concur, and thanks for posting this. I would have spent the entire day digging images to exemplify the same point.

Frankly, this is going from miscued, to overdone, to ....... downright GROTESQUE.

Do public protests work in Europe? Maybe they could block a highway in Munich, demanding that Gerry McGovern (the Land Rover Design Boss) be brought in, post-haste

Re: BMW XM Concept unveiled; Brand's first standalone M SUV with 750 BHP & 1000 Nm

I Personally like the overall design elements and BMW's attempt for this concept. Also gives us some hint on the how the new gen 7 series will look. Interior design too is moving in the right direction manages a good blend of being special and futuristic

Do note that this will be BMW M's 1st standalone vehicle since the legendary BMW M1, picking the SUV body style was the right business move.

Here are some real life pics;

Note: iDrive display is probably giving away the design of the final production model;

Re: BMW XM Concept unveiled; Brand's first standalone M SUV with 750 BHP & 1000 Nm

It is interesting to read designers describe a world entirely different than what us common folk could see!

This is how BMW describes the rear end design -

Quote:
The rear : powerful stature and newly interpreted design.
The design of the rear end likewise accentuates the car’s powerful stature, and the BMW Concept XM cuts a low and sporty figure from this angle. The rear window is inserted almost seamlessly into the rear end. The fresh interpretation of the design can also be seen in the arrangement of the BMW logo, which is laser-etched into the window below each of the two cant rails. This is a stylistic reference to the BMW M1, to date the only example of a standalone model developed exclusively by BMW M GmbH.

Lower down at the rear end, prominently flared wheel arches draw attention to the car’s powerful stance on the road. Extremely slim and boldly L-shaped rear lights extending across almost the entire width of the rear add to the effect. The lights themselves have a dark appearance when not active, giving way to a precise and uniform shade of red when switched on. Dominating the rear apron are the characteristic twin tailpipes of BMW M models. The dual-branch, twin-tailpipe exhaust system employed here reduces backpressure for the V8 engine and also generates the emotionally rich M-typical soundtrack accompanying the engine’s imposing power delivery. The vertical arrangement and hexagonal interpretation of the tailpipes breathe new life into this classically iconic feature.
And this is the end result.

Re: BMW XM Concept unveiled; Brand's first standalone M SUV with 750 BHP & 1000 Nm

Looks like a bad Hyundai concept with a BMW-ish grille.

Honestly, the Koreans are the only ones doing proper design innovation and bringing out good looking cars.
Look at the Genesis cars, and the new crop of EVs from Hundai and Kia.

Mercedes cars seems to be losing definition and is looking more and more like Blobs with triangles for headlamps. especially the EQS sedan.

And BMW seems to be just throwing random shapes onto a wall and calling it design. Reminds of all crap created in the name of "Modern Art".

Only Porsche and Audi seems to bring some good looking cars. But, Audi seems to be stuck in time with minimal changes. Dependable and good looking but becoming a bit boring.

But at least their E-tron looks good.

Re: BMW XM Concept unveiled; Brand's first standalone M SUV with 750 BHP & 1000 Nm

From thumbnails of this concept, I thought man that BMW must have been involved in nasty roll over accident only to realise it's the actual design of the car
The only design element I like on this monstrosity is the silver arch over the windows - my creta has just the same silver arch Only Honda's and Hyundai's designs are visually pleasing at this time - the new Honda Civic and the Genesis cars from Hyundai.
As far as the car and whole BMW design goes, I'm sure it'll find buyers. Purists will never like it but the gen z will lap these up in no time. Quirky and different is the current instant hit !

This concept proves that it is about time for BMW to start thinking outside the kidney grille. Honestly, they need to have some fresh perspective and spare the legendary design the world loves. BMW... please.

This looks like a pixellated image generated by a poor quality video game when it tries to render a moving object.

I am sure old crappy video games must have been the inspiration behind this.

Their primary source of inspiration is quite obvious:

BMW XM Concept unveiled; Brand's first standalone M SUV with 750 BHP & 1000 Nm-240332440.jpg

In all seriousness though, we all scoffed at the new 7 and the X7- don't think that has affected their sales numbers much. The X7 sold upwards of 21k units last year in the US, and 48k worldwide. For a frame of reference, Range Rover sales fell to around 49k worldwide. Huge grilles are the new way forward for most automakers. The only cars that could buck this trend are of course EVs, which don't need a grille.

From the rear three quarters it looks like the Creta but on steroids. The 2d design sketch makes it look even more similar but i didn't save that image yesterday. Will post if I find it.
