Default Ola's first electric car for India teased

Ola Electric has teased its first all-electric car for the Indian market. The short clip was aired during the 'Ola Customer Day' event, held at Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu.

Ola's upcoming electric car looks rather futuristic with its clean front fascia and swooping roofline. It has twin U-shaped LED headlamps with an LED light bar in the centre, while the rear features slim LED lights that stretch across the width of the car. Also, note the illuminated OLA logo.

Ola Electric hasn't released any details about its first electric car, however, CEO Bhavish Aggarwal has confirmed that more information will be revealed on August 15, 2022.

While the concept of the new EV seems to be ready, we still don't know the exact phase in which the project currently is. There is no clarity as to when the car will go into production either. However, reports suggest that it could be as early as 2023.

Teaser video starts at 54:00

They should first sort out the issues in their scooter and then venture into the 4W segment.

A fire in a 4W is much more scarier, considering the door locks often get jammed.

Unwanted acceleration in a 4W can cause much more damage to human life and property.

And please don’t copy Tesla and Jam Pack all features in a single touchscreen!!

Diwali would be the right occasion for launch of new Ola Car. The pops and bursts would definitely joy to the occasion.
Jokes apart, I hope Ola allocates more budget to their R&D than using existing customer base as guinea pigs.

They would be better off building fire engines first! They do not have a proper process to design and build a scooter thoroughly.

Employee : Sir, our 2W scooter bugs and safety concerns should be fixed soon

CEO : Of course, the car will have 12 colors to choose from !

Employee : But sir, the core technology on battery itself is not stable for a smaller application...

CEO : 1000 INR pre-booking would make millions for us, this will fix our problem. Meeting dispersed

Ola Electric hasn't released any details about its first electric car, however, CEO Bhavish Aggarwal has confirmed that more information will be revealed on August 15, 2022.

Multiple reports of the OLA Car spontaneously combusting across the country incoming in 3..2..1..

Jokes aside they should probably fix the multiple faults of the OLA Scooter that already exist rather than going for a car of all things.

Look around you OLA Electric, your competitors have way better products (that don't randomly catch fire) you've got one hell of a reality check coming your way if you don't fix your existing problems (most of which should've probably been fixed before launch). Till then I will advice anyone looking for a premium electric scooter to avoid the Ola Scooter like the plague and book an Ather 450x or a TVS iCube instead, you know products from manufacturers that properly engineer and actually test their products before launching them into the market.

Hope Ola gets its act together effectively for their car launch and not rush to sell it before fully testing it. That said doesn't the front fascia look like Lucid's Air? No?!

Would people readily buy a Tv, washing machine or Ac if launched by Suzuki, Yamaha or Honda? Would they buy a scooter or car launched by Sony or Whirlpool?

Then how come they are ready to buy an EV from any start up operating in a different industry? Do they think of Evs as mere gadgets and not realize they are serious road going vehicles? Should not the launching company have expertise in that field?

I get your point but IF Suzuki or honda entered the tv or washimachine space I would definitely buy one. Decades of competence and being Japanese would be enough.

This looks like an attempt to turn attentions of both media and investors. I'm not saying Ola isn't capable of it, but it is just too soon even for an existing manufacturer. A car designed, tested, and mass produced from scratch in what, 1-2 years? If they pull it off, it is an achievement.

But will people buy it? nope.

Yamaha already makes pianos, drumsets, AV receivers, bikes, boats, guitars etc.

Honda makes even more variety of goods from lawnmovers, pumps, generators, robots, bikes, cars and even aircraft.

Companies diversifying into other fields is not in itself a bad idea. The problem with Ola is that it suffers from the typical Indian software / IT company mindset of overpromising within unreasonable time frames and underdelivering.

This video provides a lot more detail about what went wrong :

Unlike software where you can brush everything under the rug and just keep releasing updates till you figure out what is broken, hardware such as vehicles involves a lot more testing and you can't just shock and awe your investors by ticking all the hype and marketing boxes and then releasing a pile of crap. When a program has serious bugs, at most you will be losing some productive office time and money. When a vehicle has serious bugs, you are looking at serious loss of life and property.

Definitely more than one concept previewed here, perhaps more of a design study. Usually this is a sign of playing with multiple mock-ups rather than concentrating on one particular model for development/launch.

Here's my take:

Model 1:

Bring it on, Ola. I admire the ambition & aggression of Bhavish Aggarwal and his team.

While Ola is suffering quality & reliability issues, I think we are blowing it out of proportion. For one, even after decades of building cars, VW still cannot make a reliable gearbox? After decades of building cars, several Hyundai Konas caught fire? BMW this year recalled 1 million (yes, 1 million!!!) cars due to fire risks. It's 3 years and Tata still cannot build a perfect Harrier. Should they stop building cars?

Every manufacturer has reliability & safety challenges.

What Ola has achieved in such a short time, with absolutely zero experience of building vehicles, is legendary.

You'll see a lot more of this. EVs are inherently simpler to make, due to lesser mechanical components (not even a gearbox!). Batteries, motors & controllers will become commoditized, like the CPU, RAM & display of your phone / laptop today.

Expertise in any area can be easily acquired by hiring the right people. We all see people jump companies in hordes when a key person jumps.

Its just the intent and investment in a particular aspect from the company that matters. Ola can easily solve their issues if they pause/acknowledge and fix it. Takes time. Such products already about integration using components from multiple companies and they can offer their knowledge and reference designs.

So I fault Ola about their commitment to current issues and hope they fix them at the earliest. Suspension breaking seems like a juvenile thing.

Its more about getting your basics right and then launch and expand product lines. Ola is rushing into the next product without stabilizing the 2wheeler line first !
