Re: Nexon EV catches fire in Mumbai; Tata Motors releases official statement

Tata is definitely right to say that this is an isolated incident, however they must figure out if this is the case with EVs that are starting to age. It would have been helpful if the official statement had a bit more details about the car in question e.g. age and KMs run.

Similar to normal ICE cars, even EVs may develop battery flaws with usage over the medium to long term, therefore it becomes crucial to determine if there are any preventive steps to be taken.

I am confident that this will not be a deterrent for potential Nexon EV customers, it truly is one of the best offerings in the EV space at the moment.

'Thermal Incident' is a mild way to put it.
Glad everyone is safe.

Re: Nexon EV catches fire in Mumbai; Tata Motors releases official statement

The fire seems to be in the charger port area probably from the on board charger and not from the battery.
A simple electric arc from a short, loose contact, conductive debris in charge port can cause arcing, which as you know can be hot enough to melt steel.

Plastics, rubber, paint etc will then add fuel to the fire.

A regular I.C engine car can also catch fire by arcing from its 12v battery, like the fires you see due to poor installations of electrical accessories.

The LFP battery pack under the car appears not to be on fire and it's highly unlikely to catch fire due to it's chemistry.

I believe that ageing won't make that big an issue, these fires are mainly caused by manufacturing defects due to poor quality control or poor manufacturing processes.

For reference, batteries on the Samsung Galaxy S 7s started showing issues right at the outset, and not a few years down the line. Similarly, even the battery EV scooters that had thermal runaway events were mostly new.

Re: Nexon EV catches fire in Mumbai; Tata Motors releases official statement

I had stated in another thread that Tata has made a mistake by using Nexon brand in EV. This is the first dent to the Nexon brand. Hope their strategists stop selling EVs in Nexon brand NOW!
Create another brand, please. We see how cleverly you skipped 'Nexon' from the official statement.

Re: Nexon EV catches fire in Mumbai; Tata Motors releases official statement

Hoping this is just an isolated incident. If indeed the car is brand new, it could have been a QC issue. Lets hope they can identify the issue and make any changes if needed.

I have complete trust in TML that even there is an issue they would not issue a recall, but just replace parts for customers when they come for a service

Well, the Nexon brand itself started off with dent because of the stability issues with the vehicle soon after launch back in 2017 (which they fixed later on). There were so many nexons toppling on roads but then TML used these incidents to showcase the build quality saying all the passengers walked away safely. Hopefully they don't use this incident to say that despite the fire, there was no loss to life and showcase how much they care for the passengers

A running car catching fire is not a good sign. Most ev's catch fire during charging.
The owner charged his car in his office and was on his way home , having driven around 5 km.
Lets see what Tata finds is the cause.

Re: Nexon EV catches fire in Mumbai; Tata Motors releases official statement

This is concerning. I really hope this turns out to be one-off incident and doesn't result into being a manufacturing issue. So far we did not have any EV car fire incidents in India. This will be a setback to lot of potential and existing customers. Though I trust Tata to be transparent and address this soon.

Problems and failures are good as long as they are taken as a lesson. This will be a great Case Study on how Tata is going to handle the situation and what measures they can take.

I will hold on to my thoughts and impressions till they provide an update whether it's a vehicle fault or some external factors caused it.

During the testing stages yes, but extremely dangerous when it's a customer driving their brand new car. These kind of failures can cause great harm and danger to life.

Glad everyone's safe. Of course they can say it's an isolated incident, but that's hoping it actually is. If this happens to another one, and God forbid it does, it's not that isolated anymore.
