I wonder how come BYD is expecting that people would book the car for 50K INR without even knowing the actual price of it !

Are you sure about the cancellation charges? Prices not announced and earliest delivery is another 3 months away. Oh man.. not sure how many would be willing to bite the bullet with this policy.

I was told by the SA at BYD Kochi that the display vehicle would be available from this Thursday at the showroom. Finally, a chance to see the vehicle in flesh.

This is interesting. Appears that they want to keep a low profile, and mean business. They don't appear to be fond of the desi style drumbeat of a press release on the number of bookings every third day.

Interestingly, Warren Buffet's holding company has a solid stake in BYD Auto.

Quote:
Berkshire paid $232 million for the 225 million BYD shares it bought in 2008.

By the end of last year, the value of those shares had ballooned to nearly $7.7 billion. The success of the BYD investment is one example of why so many investors follow Buffett's moves closely because he has a remarkably successful track record over the decades.

While I appreciate BYD unveiling Atto 3, not revealing the price at this juncture is a stupid move by an unknown company in India.
They do not have any brand equity to toy with potential customers.

Also charging cancellation fees of 25K is atrocious by any standards.

Which ICE car can be compared to this model in terms of size, spaciousness, power etc? I would like to do a cost feasibility analysis i.e. how many kms does this need to be driven to break even the higher purchase cost with regards to a comparable ICE car.

For Tata's its easy since none of the EVs are born electric, so we can readily compare Tiago AMT vs Tiago EV, Nexon ICE vs Nexon EV etc.

re: BYD Atto 3 electric SUV to be launched this festive season. EDIT: Priced at Rs. 34 lakh

The specs and features really look good. But 50k booking fees and 25k cancellation for a product whose price isn't revealed is atrocious! I remember calling up the BYD dealer here who wanted me to make an unofficial booking back then for Rs.10k. I had lost interest when he said the car would cost north of 35 lakhs. And he asked me to 'at least book by giving 5k' which was funny as even a 10L Tiago EV had a booking amount of 21k.

Also, is it true that BYD is looking for the CKD route than the SKD route? Is that why price reveal has been pushed to November? Can we expect some competitive pricing for this?

Guess will wait till December 2022 to book based on the prices as there is a cancellation fee of Rs.25000 on the booking amount.

It is true that the cancellation fee is 25k! I had asked the same to the dealer (in BLR) saying either mention the approx. price range or atleast have the cancellation fee waived off in order one to proceed confidently.

They mentioned that the car would be in the 30-32L price bracket as per the info. they have. And they will only know for sure once BYD releases the pricing.

So they are looking for high intent customers. Not a bad move. Will help them gauge the level od BYD brand awareness (however small or big). Also, prevents people from just taking from 50K from SB account and putting it in the queue for a month or so. Purchase funnel quality is important when demand outstrips supply by a large margin. The message that booking to delivery is not like 8 - 12 months also helps send the right signal. In their current state they have limited units they want to sell. Its easier to send feelers on price in the market later on via dealers. The best marketing is wheels on the road. Interesting launch.

How does Atto3 compare with E6? Are there any good sources of information?

For those interested, the Atto 3 should have an official Euro NCAP safety rating within the next hour. BYD are reportedly expecting five stars.
