Re: Rosso Diablo | 2023 Tesla Model 3 Performance (M3P) | 20,000 miles in 21 months | Ownership Repo

2023 Tesla Model 3 Performance-24,000 Miles (39,000 kms) Report

October 21st, 2024 marked 2-years of completion of Rosso Diablo.

24,000 miles (39,000kms) in 24 months came up pretty quickly. Partly because now this has become primary car for travelling around the city and also use it for going to work which is on and off.

Till date, the longest our Tesla has traveled is up north to Whistler in Canada and south up to Portland which is 150 miles north and 200 miles south at a stretch.

Never got inclined to use it for any longer drives and also into the mountains because my other car does that duty.

Just to refresh here is the post for my detailed review when I had completed 10,000 miles :

https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/elect...ml#post5638412

I will probably use the same parameters to provide a feedback after clocking 24,000 miles.

Acceleration/Performance

Well, nothing has changed. Outright acceleration remains its key USP. I enjoy watching other cars become small dots or disappear when I accelerate at every red light. Old habits die hard. But, heck these cars are meant to be enjoyed this way.

Standstill, accelerate to 70+ mph in little over 3 seconds and then take the foot of the gas (err..accelerator) to slow down. I tell ya’ll it’s pretty lonely at this point as rest of the traffic is nowhere to be seen.

This part will never get old. Love’ it !!

Steering & Handling

Steering wheel weighs up nicely with the 3 options that we have. I love the sports setting where the steering is taut and it takes an effort to turn the wheel (feels almost like hydraulic).

Handling is sharp and I love throwing the car into corners and roundabouts.

Approach a corner or roundabout fast and just lift off the pedal (REGEN works like a charm) and when halfway into the corner, give it a slight tap to rush through the corner.

It’s a thrilling maneuver that I enjoy every single day and makes me feel like driving a proper sports car.

Build Quality

Build quality is just fine. Nothing to complain. Except a creak here and there once in a while probably due to my weight on the seat.

My only pain point at this mileage is the tire noise. I am still using the OEM tires as I plan to burn it to ground before getting my favorite (Michelin Pilot Sports All Seasons). Hopefully these tires will last me until Jan/Feb of next year.

Autopilot

I’m a fan of the Autopilot and an even bigger fan of FSD (Full Self Driving).

Tesla had given a free trail of FSD a few months ago (I reckon, it was sometime in July) and now they have given it yet again.

I’m currently using FSD that expires on November 30th. Oh boy! FSD is truly a marvel and I have tested it inside out and I am yet to find any fault. Previous time, the only issue was it once “phantom braked” but, as of now don’t see that issue at all. This works best when I am coming back from work and freeway is jammed up and I slot it into FSD and sit back and relax. It will take me home without having to do anything (literally nothing, except touch the wheel every 2-odd mins to tell that I am attentive).

Tesla has updated the software and there is a super cool feature called ASS- Shhh not the one you are thinking’..lol ((Actual Smart Summon)-At a touch of the button on phone, the car can park itself and if you need to fetch it from a distance, it will unpark itself and come to you from a distance. Pretty cool…eh?

Best part about the Tesla is regular software updates which is literally once every few weeks which makes the car feel fresh like new.

Charging

In my entire ownership experience, I have charged my Tesla only 4-times at Superchargers . Thrice in Vancouver, Canada and once in Portland, OR.

Superchargers- Car gets charged from 20% to 80% in about 30-40mins even at the most basic Tesla Supercharger (V2) that charges about 150KW.

I haven’t charged at a V3 (250KW) yet which is supposed to be blazing fast and it can cut down almost 40% of the charging speed.

20% to 80% will probably take about 15-20 mins.

Now comes the best part. Cost is always in the range of $7-$11 for this amount of charging.

Love the savings too !!

Tires

My current set has gone to the dogs. I’m bearing the noisy tires because they cost a bomb. As I am having an amazing experience with Michelin Pilot Sports All Seasons on the bimmer, I’m tilting heavily to get these for the Tesla as well.

4 Tires will set me back by $1800 ++.

Touchwood- Zero punctures or any kind of issues with the OEM tires till date.

Service & Maintenance Costs

Zilch. Nada. $0 (Actually, it’s $7 spent till date but, it feels good to call it NADA)..Haha!

I have never been to a Service Center till date. No issues from any aspect of the car. Touchwood again !!

In last 2 years, I have changed windshield wiper fluid twice (Total cost is $7). Here we get lot of rains so this baby has to work overtime.

Perception

Folks automatically assume that you are an Indian and drive a Tesla means you work in Information Technology. There are lot of funny stories behind it but, the reality is it’s correct. West Coast is littered with Teslas. Be it California or Washington- Every 3rd or 4th car is a Tesla and mostly driven by Indians or Asians. Jeez..I hate this perception but, what to do, it’s a reality. LOL!

Downside

Running a Tesla is cheap but, the biggest downside is the insurance costs are expensive as the insurance companies think that Tesla repairs are expensive so their premiums are super expensive compared to a gas car. It's in the range of $150-$175 each month.

Summary : Even after completing 2-years of ownership of this fast performance electric sedan with 24K clicks on the odometer, it feels like I just got the car out of the showroom yesterday. No changes to performance and everything works like a charm.

Knowing that I can drive this car for another 300,000 miles without having to change anything except the tires and other basic consumables feels great with respect to the decision to purchase and own this car. I can confidently say that whoever drives a Tesla will never go back to a regular gasoline car (Performance Gasoline cars not included in this assumption).

Cheers to Tesla and Hope to continue to enjoy this gorgeous machine for many more years ahead. !!!

Crossed 24K sometime last week.

Same thing in the NYC/NJ area. Whenever a Tesla goes by I tell my wife an Asian or Indian person is driving it and when we pass it I'm almost 100% right.

If you go to Edison, NJ which has a huge Indian population the parking lots are filled with Teslas.

Thank you for the compliment on the pictures. Fall in Washington is breathtaking. Please look out for a travelogue on fall pictures later today.

LOL, so my perception is correct. Here is one of the funny stories :

My mom went for a haircut here and she was attended to by a white American lady and they were chit chatting. She asked what her son does. She said, he is in IT. Her next questions- Does he drive a Tesla?

On a side note, I am enjoying the Full Self Driving that is enabled until end of November, 2024

Here is a video of how she takes the roundabouts soooo effortlessly. I use the "assertive" mode in FSD and sometimes it's scary as it loves to keep changing lanes and changes lanes at 70mph which feels really fast. Even in this video, on such a narrow road, check how assertive she is. Slows down and accelerates confidently.

Thats pretty smooth driving. I wonder if anyone had tried FSD mode on a Tesla in NYC

There are tons of videos of folks driving in bustling New York City traffic in FSD.

Here are a couple of short videos of a guy driving his Tesla in FSD in Mid-Town Manhattan. Check it out.

I think it drives pretty cool with minimal to zero errors.

Another one in New York City

Pretty impressive

I used to live in Mid-town Manhattan and was once of one of those pedestrians who used regularly jaywalk, now I only do it while going and coming from work

Congratulations on successfully completing 24k miles in your Tesla. Lets hope that we can read a review about your Tesla crossing 100k miles mark. Just a small query, what is the battery replacement policy of Tesla. Thank you for sharing and keep on munching miles.

Thanks for your lovely words. Why 100K, why not 200K miles?

You will know why I am saying this when I answer your question.

Tesla's Battery Replacement Policy Covers the following :

Model 3 & Y Battery Warranty : 120,000 miles or 8 years whichever is before.

Model S and Model X Battery Warranty : 150,000 miles or 8 years whichever is before.

If the battery degrades to 70% during the warranty period, Tesla will replace the battery with a brand new one at no cost.

Tesla Battery replacement will cost roughly $12K-$16K depending on the model.

Take this as an example. An average American drives about 15K miles per year. Which means it's 120,000 miles in 8 years and that's why automakers calculate using this average and is pretty standard across the country.

Now coming to your question on degradation, While I have not checked mine yet. but, the general average is 15% degradation at 200,000 miles. Wohoooo !!

Which means a 100% battery will be down to 85% after you clock the above mentioned miles.

This also means that we are safeguarded with respect to replacing a battery for the life of the vehicle. Unless, you are an uber driver or someone who clocks crazy miles (I know a few who do 25K to 40K miles in a year).

Here is an interesting link about a general study of Tesla Battery Degradation :

https://insideevs.com/news/723734/te...n-200000miles/

I missed sharing couple of favorite pictures in the compilation below. Taken at the same time as below :

That's really reassuring. Looks like Tesla can really last a lifetime without worries about battery life. Also, the cost for battery replacement seems to be reasonable or is it.

Yes. That's another important USP of Tesla.

Re: Rosso Diablo | 2023 Tesla Model 3 Performance (M3P) | 24,000 miles in 24 months | Ownership Repo

Earlier this week, Rosso Diablo crossed 25,000 miles ( 40,000 kms) in 2 years.

Drives like a charm, zero issues till date and $0 bucks spent.

Never been to a Tesla center and still on OEM tires which needs replacement.

Well, that's a lot of bang for the buck you spent on the best EV vehicle on the planet.

25,000 Miles completed. Total energy used 7,000 kWh. That's less than $700 spent on electricity in the last 2 years. Heck, I'm pumped.

Re: Rosso Diablo | 2023 Tesla Model 3 Performance (M3P) | 25,000 miles in 25 months | Ownership Repo

Tesla Model 3 Performance Tire Replacement at 25,100 miles ( 40,000 kms)

Man Proposes and God Disposes. Well, I think this saying fits apt into my story.

Yesterday (November 30th), I was blissfully driving on the freeway at some good speeds (80mph+) and suddenly I see a message pop on my screen.

“Air Pressure is very low, please pull over safely”

Darn, I had just passed an exit.

As most of you know, we typically get exits every 3-4 odd miles so I moved right to the slowest lane and turned the mode to “Chill” and cautiously took the first exit off the freeway. I found a gas station and stopped there.

I was shocked to see the air pressure had dropped to 12 PSI in rear right tire (RR).

Other 3 tires were showing the correct pressure- 40+ PSI which is the recommended pressure.

I paid $2.50 (Expensive..huh?) to fill air in tire and I could not go beyond 22 psi as it was a bit of an effort and I was doing it for the first time in US..lol.

I immediately called another tire store nearby and he asked me to come over.

With 22 PSI, I started towards that store which was 3 miles away and 12-15 mins away. I kept my eye on the PSI and it rapidly dropped to 12 PSI again. Whew !!

Met the tire store owner and he saw the tire and said, this needs to be checked by Tesla and the tire is gone since I am driving on it for sometime.

My tire purchase was due and we were thinking of making a trip to Portland and enjoy sometime there and also get the tires changed. But, like I mentioned man proposes and god disposes.

Interesting Trivia : This is my first flat (not sure if I can call it a flat as it was leaking air) since I moved to America and also after driving for over 120,000 miles ( 2 Lakh Kms). This would probably be a record in my own driving history.

I called my favorite tire store which is undoubtedly the best in America- DISCOUNT TIRE

I took some instant decisions between Michelin PS4 All Seasons or Continental DSW06+ as both are neck-to-neck in high performance. I decided to go with Continentals as I wanted to have this on Tesla so it’s easier to compare between this and the Michelin on the BMW.

Stock Size : 235/35/R20
Chosen Size : 245/35/R20

I was researching tires for a long time so the decision on the tire and upsize was not too difficult. Upsize was recommended on many Tesla forums as it would guarantee a better ride and cornering grip.

Spoke to Discount Tire while driving a fast air pressure losing Tesla, they confirmed that the aforementioned tires are available (Love DT) and come right over.

I was supposed to meet someone for lunch so that got cancelled and I went hungry and reached DT around 2:00pm. Since I landed without appointment, it took a little over an hour for my turn and I was out of the store by 3:45pm as the actual tire replacement is literally 15 minutes.

Have to thank god it happened on a Black Friday weekend as I got a phenomenal deal with $120 mail in rebate and also strangely the upsize to 245 was cheaper by $50/tire

I also bought the tire certificates which cost about $40/tire so I have a peace of mind for the life of these tires.

So here is the details :

Continental Extreme Contact DSW06+
245/35/R20
50,000 Miles Warranty

Interesting Anecdote : DSW stands for (Dry, Wet & Snow) and it’s imprinted on the tire. Apparently, first the D fades away then S will fade off and finally when W fades then its time for replacement of tires. Cool..eh?

With tire certificates, it’s free flat repair, free tire replacements for the life of tires (50,000 miles).

Free Tire Rotations, Air and Wiper Blades check and replacement is anyways part of the regular deal.

I decided to break-in the tires by driving in “Chill Mode” for next 100-200 miles before I can unleash the true potentials of these tires which come with literally 5/5 rating for Dry, Wet and Traction by users who drives performance cars like BMW, Porsches, Tesla Plaids etc.

Brief Observations after driving the car for 75 miles post the new and delicious rubber :

1. Immediately noticeable is the car has become absolutely silent. Now I can listen to songs at 80mph without any problems of tire noise interrupting the decibel levels in the cabin.

2. Next up is the steering weight (Tesla comes with Light, Standard and Heavy) and in lightest mode, it felt like heavy of previous tires. Standard was even heavier and Heavy option with Sports mode feels like a proper hydraulic system. Extremely satisfied with the steering feel now.

Other than above, I cannot make out as I am driving in chill mode and not going above speed limits and taking cornering gently and accelerating off the line super gently so I can break-in the tires properly.

Another lesson learnt is to rotate the tires religiously in 7k-8K miles.

I will open up the acceleration and maniac mode after another 100 miles and will update how they feel. As per the reviews (a couple of short ones below), it is supposed to perform really well and is always preferred by performance cars like Porsche, BMW, Audi etc.

Good comparison here

Cheers to the new tires and hope they serve the Rosso Diablo well !!!

Drove like this for 10-12 miles with one tire only at 5 PSI.

Totally love Tesla for taking me safely to a tire store and not breaking down on me on a freeway.

Shouldnt the rear tyres be wider than the front as they come from the factory? From what I know, the front is 235 and the rear's are 275 for Model 3 Performance. My Model Y Performance has 255 front and a 275 rear.

Other 3 tires were showing the correct pressure- 40+ PSI which is the recommended pressure.
With such low pressure, you should have noticed a wobble as a driver?

Mine has a recommended pressure of 33-35 psi, I have not noticed a drop to 30 psi (which was a slow puncture documented here (2023 Edition | Your must-have car accessories today)) but was obvious for 22 and 20 psi slow punctures I experienced other 2 times.
