Kia EV5 all-electric concept SUV globally unveiled

Just days after revealing the production version of the full-size EV9 SUV, Kia has now unveiled its EV5 Concept.

The new Kia EV5 Concept is a smaller, more compact all-electric SUV with styling similar to its larger EV9 sibling. The EV5 concept was unveiled as part of the Chinese EV day event and is scheduled to launch in the Chinese market sometime later this year.

Kia hasn't revealed any specifics about the EV5, although reports do suggest it will be underpinned by the E-GMP platform similar to the EV6 and EV9 models from the South Korean carmaker. While the dimensions of the SUV are also under wraps, the Kia EV5 is said to be roughly the same size as the brand's Sportage SUV sold globally.

In terms of styling, the Kia EV5 comes with a boxy yet minimalistic design, similar to that seen on the EV9 concept. The EV5 also comes with rear-hinged doors due to the absence of a B-pillar. The car also gets 21-inch wheels with an asymmetrical design. Inside, the EV5 comes with 90-degree swivel seats, a panoramic sunroof, a pop-up wooden table in the boot, a large display integrating the digital instrument cluster and the infotainment system on the dashboard, and a futuristic steering wheel.

2024 Kia EV5 electric compact SUV revealed in production form.

The electric Kia EV5 gets concept looks, a single electric motor and a battery pack sourced from BYD.

Quote:
The dimensions of the EV5 are as follows: a length of 4,615 mm (181.7 inches), a width of 1,875 mm (73.8 inches), and a height of 1,715 mm (67.5 inches), all built upon a wheelbase measuring 2,750 mm (108.3 inches). These measurements position the EV5 as the electric counterpart to the Kia Sportage within the manufacturer’s lineup.
Quote:
The EV5 is built upon the E-GMP architecture, incorporating McPherson front struts and a multi-link rear suspension, consistent with other electric models offered by Kia. According to the provided specifications, the SUV will be equipped with a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor obtained from Vitesco Automotive Electronics. This motor generates 215 horsepower (160 kW / 218 PS) and 310 Nm (229 lb-ft) of torque, which is exclusively channeled to the front wheels. The maximum speed will be electronically capped at 185 km/h (115 mph). Energy will be stored in BYD’s Blade lithium iron phosphate battery pack, although precise range data is not available at this time.
The official unveiling of the Kia EV5 is scheduled for August 25 at the Chengdu Motor Show.

Looks considerably better and is more practical than the EV6. If they price it around the same or below the ioniq 5, it should see decent volumes.

Haven't been tracking the Kia EV product line so I might be off the mark. But if this is a similar sized product to the EV6 and on the same platform, wouldn't this more likely sit at par with or above the EV6 on pricing and not below it? Just on the standard assumption that anything with an SUV body style will command a higher price than a coupe / sedan styled car?

This, to me, is how a facelift or EV version of Carens would look rather than a SUV.

My observation is based on the news that Kia/Hyundai is setting up a production hub for EVs in India:

https://www.team-bhp.com/news/kia-se...tion-hub-india

While globally, the EV5 and EV6 are the same price, in India, the EV6 is imported as a CBU while there is a higher chance of the EV5 being locally made/assembled and hence having lower pricing. The numerical heirarchy of 5 < 6 will also mollify existing owners of the EV6 who bought at CBU prices.

I also doubt they would price it higher than the Hyundai Ioniq 5 which also uses the same platform and is locally assembled. The Ioniq 5 is also priced significantly below the EV6.

This here seems to be a nice comprehensive video on the EV5, focussed from the Australian market standpoint but giving a nice global perspective too. If they can bring this to India anywhere around the Ioniq price range, they’ll have a pretty strong product on their hand.

Re: Kia EV5 all-electric concept SUV globally unveiled

2025 Kia EV5 starts at $20,900 in China or nearly half the price of Tesla Model Y.

Entry-level versions of the EV5 are equipped with a 64.2 kWh BYD battery pack and have 329 miles of range.

Kia launched the new EV5 in China and has confirmed the base powertrain will be sold in three grades; the 530 Light, the 530 Air, and the 530 Land. The base model starts at just 149,800 yuan (~$20,900) while the mid-range model is 159,800 yuan (~$22,300), and the flagship version starts at 174,800 yuan (~$24,400).
The entry-level model is underpinned by BYD’s LFP Blade battery with a 64.2 kWh capacity, a 160 kW (215 hp) and 229 lb-ft (310 Nm) electric motor, and 329 miles (530 km) of range on the generous Chinese test cycle. It is not yet clear what differentiates the Light, Air, and Land models but it appears that all have the same powertrain.

For those looking for additional power and range, there’s some promising news. Kia will also sell the EV5 with a larger 88 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery with the same 160 kW (215 hp) motor but with a more impressive 447 miles (720 km) of range.

The company is also tipped to offer the EV5 with a dual-motor powertrain combining a 160 kW (215 hp) front electric motor with a 70 kW (94 hp) rear motor and the same 88 kWh battery. Pricing details for these two variants have not yet been announced.
