This is not to defend BYD or Chinese quality, but could not help noticing few things:
  • He keeps repeating EV fires all owner China, without offering even a guess or estimate of how many per year. I understand getting reliable data out of China is hard, but at least he could have said these X incidents out of the Y reports. I wonder if 'Y' is such that it will significantly reduce the sensationalisation.
  • Is this not similar to how if a Tesla catches fire it is news, but ICE fires are statistics?
  • Even when we have an estimate, we have to see number of incidents per car, as EVs in China seem to be more than the rest of the world put together.

  • Aren't the Electric buses in India (and other countries) from BYD? Hopefully data about fires in them will be more reliable.
Overall there is definitely a feeling of fear and defensiveness in the video. There is a rich history of upcoming country/economy branded as cheap low quality, until eventually both actual quality and perception of quality improves. Most recent country to complete this transition is Japan, went from cheap low quality in the 50/60s to 80/90s. Koreans will be the next, and may already there in some categories.

Good summary of this:
Quote:
Why do people associate items that are made in China with being bad quality?

When the States first began to manufacture goods, their goods were associated with cheap and reliable knock-offs by the Europeans who have been doing these for ages.

When Japan first began to manufacture goods, their goods were associated with cheap and reliable knock-offs by the Europeans and Americans who have been doing these for ages.

When South Korea first began to manufacture goods, their goods were associated with cheap and reliable knock-offs by the Europeans. Americans and Japanese who have been doing these for ages.

When China...I think you get the drift.

Every nation that enters the manufacturing game goes through this phase, when their items were seriously of bad quality. The Chinese are getting into the game, but unlike the rest, they came in at a time when more people wants their items CHEAP. Expensive and reliable Chinese-made goods are used in everything hi-tech like phones. Cheap and unreliable Chinese-made goods are flooding the supermarkets, and directly used by consumers who buy these toys, food products, etc.

The association will eventually go away as another nation gets into the manufacturing game. Perhaps we may one day hear of some African nation being known as the nation that produces cheap and unreliable knock-offs.

This youtuber used to live in China and later escaped from China as he was exposing lot of their internal 'stuff' and the Chinese authorities were closing in allegedly, and is settled in the US now. He is definitely anti China and he might have his own reasons/compulsions. You can look at his other videos to get the full picture. Some of them are informative and some are true as I have personally seen.
China and Quality is a double edged sword especially if the product is from a fully owned Chinese entity. But then, since China is now the factory of the world and all eyes are focused on them to pick them apart, quality is used as a stick. Hope the cars sold in India is up to the mark and we can only hope that the quality of the regulations and its implementation by our authorities is also up to the mark.
One major take away from the video is how difficult it is to put out an EV fire. A totally different approach is needed to beat the lithium battery fires.
