Re: MG Comet EV Review

The banter war images circulating on social space were never from official tata motors marketing team nor from MG motors india.

Why would tata motors do so in first place they are suppliers of battery pack to MG for comet ev.

Tata has just clarified

Re: MG Comet EV Review

Absolutely wonderful! A refreshing product on par with the great 800 and the Nano, although the two of them enjoyed different levels of success.

For its target demographic, this product matches to the T. Comfortable getting in and out for two, electric and automatic, refreshing design, and well built. The vibration and noise free electric EV is at ease in bumper to bumper city traffic, while its gas guzzlers are busy burning dead trees.

Lack of a dedicated luggage space isn’t a big deal for a city commuter. The range is decent, and the speed limit wont be a problem for most. I am a bit disappointed on the music system, specially when they have given this car a good infotainment unit, as per the review.

Feedback to my reviewers - it’s not really an unproven technology if a million of them have already been sold, just this model.

Best of luck to MG. Hoping they sell several thousands of these every month.

Re: MG Comet EV Review

It is priced sensibly but somehow I am still not able to digest the awkward-looking exterior, two-door concept (in India), and range.
I feel Tata Nano will look better in the EV version, if at all Tata launches.

I will still go with Tiago EV if I am in the market for a better range, practicability, full four-door hatch, proper boot, and a proven product

Re: MG Comet EV Review

The car sounds all well and good in theory. Small, EV, quirky. All the elements you need for a modern Urban commuter. What concerns me is the actual driving bit.

Now if I spend >8 lakhs on a strictly urban 2 seater car, I most definitely will use it for all urban commutes.

We all are aware of how rowdy Indian traffic is. Is it safe taking one of these on the Intra City "Highways"? (EEH, WEH, Eastern Freeway, Vashi and Airoli bridge for Bombay folks)

Driving a 40hp EV that will stop accelerating at mid-double digits and has 145-section tyres on 12-inch rims on the aforementioned roads seems like a scary proposition to me.

So, is this product targeting a super niche audience or am I missing something?

Re: MG Comet EV Review

Thinking should I say ...

"Tata can kill this car overnight by reducing Tiago EV by 25-35K summer offer"

Or

"Did Tata miss the boat by not bringing the Nano EV out?"

Either ways, after 15 years 4 months India has seen a Truly unique car. After the Nano this is probably the most Hatke-se, Out of the box thinking automobile where the GenZ theme is written all over the product. It is so Ola & Ather of the 4 wheeler Industry. I mean, just look at it. Nothing about Ola/Ather is Activa'ish or Pulsar'ish - Quirky/Witty/Smart - thats the next generation of Auto industry for you.

What Maruti did in 83/84 to the Amby/Fiats...
What Pulsar did to the Ind-Suzuki/RX100/KB100/CD100...
What Activa did to the Kinetic Honda/Chetaks/Geared bikes...
What the Opel Corsa/Ford Escort did to Maruti...

This 'thingy' is truly right up there, sales numbers be Dammed! This will set the bar high for so many lesser noticed things in a Desi Car.

Re: MG Comet EV Review

Car screams Chinese dabba being packed for Indian lunch Jokes part, don't see this sustain for a long time being a 2 door with more EV options coming up in the near future. Tiago EV is more practical and decent looking compared to Comet and this car will attract unnecessary attention on road amongst the masses in a wrong way. After the initial hype settles down, not sure how many units MG will be able to sell this. Possible buyers will be first time college goers or homemakers, as this cannot be someone's primary vehicle.

Much has been said on the potential or the lack of it, of the Comet. As a past owner of Nano, I can say that it was one good car! It had the potential to change the urban mobility but the marketing failed it. I hope comet picks it up and finishes the job which Nano could not.

PS: I like Tata but I like this competition too!

Auto-riskshaw from the outside.
Mercedes from the inside.

A very quirky design. Would be interesting to see if Indians will put their stigma aside and buy this over a more conventional looking car despite the comments they will face from society.

PS: As a hycross owner, I am very jealous of how good the window switches look and how all the plastic panel gaps look even and well put together.

Re: MG Comet EV Review

It is confirmed in the training of employees that there will be two models. The base one won't have keyless entry, rear camera for sure and maybe some lesser smart features. The prices are for base model and the higher one would be priced somewhat higher.

Re: MG Comet EV Review

I’m sure the Mercedes SmartforTwo elicited similar reactions. As I am sure the Mercedes original A Class itself must have done.
And the Nano did. And the Bajaj QUTE.
Go back to history and there plenty of cars of this kind. Bubble cars like the Messerschmitt, GoggonMobil, BMW, Isetta etc.

All being said, this Comet might be a good solution to our crowded cities, much the way the APE mini trucks are, in Italy.
It will certainly be better than an Auto Rickshaw.

The thing is this 8 Lac price. There lies the real rub.

Re: MG Comet EV Review

Happen to visit the BLR MG showroom where one comet was on display. Following are the observation and inputs from sales team (needs to be verified)

1. Quality of material seems exceptionally well. Doors are heavy & thick. Buttons and other gadgetry is also of good quality. No one can say its a cheap car.
2. Some how photos do not do justice. Being in front of the car, actually shows its a good shape and good utility city car.
3. Sales person told that there will be 3 variants. The price revealed is for the base variant. The display variant & the one advertised everywhere is the top variant.
4. Although information about battery warranty is not known but guess is for 5 years.
5. Rear seat has adequate space for short ride 1-1.5 hrs max. Due to less depth, the thigh support is not there & knees are inclined upwards which will not suit longer ride duration.
6. Ingress to rear seat can be challenging for senior citizens.
7. Door handles are strangely placed due to which while closing the door user cannot hold it and the door closes hard with loud sound (every time).

Re: MG Comet EV Review

I didn't liked the exterior. Maybe seeing it in person may change my opinion. As I didn't like the new Verna in pics but on road it looks quite futuristic and appealing.

Really liked the interior though how sustainable it is in our dusty and pollution ridden conditions has to be seen. That's why I will always prefer black interior in Indian cars.

Would I buy it if I was in market for an EV.
No.

Reasons-
1. Not sure how safe it is if there is a head to head collision. By the looks of it I am not really hopeful.

2. Boot space is a must. Even if it's just something like 250 litre or so.

3. Not a fan of 2 door styling. It's an inconvenience if more than 2 people are going to sit.

4. In most video reviews I saw suspension is quite bouncy. If true that's a bummer.

5. No fast charging option. Should have given us the option atleast.

For 80k more Tiago Ev sounds like a better option for me. However, I am glad MG launched this. If it's a hit or a flop time will tell but atleast we the customers are getting more options which is always good to see. And this may suit someone else priorities completely unlike me.

Re: MG Comet EV Review

Great review. One thing I couldn't find out in the review was if this has hill hold assist. The Tiago doesn't have that.

Re: MG Comet EV Review

I thought I'd never say this but i absolutely adore this car, as a 2nd or 3rd car, this just screams perfection .

p.s I'd never drive an automatic or an electric car over a manual but this thing is still really enticing for what it offers as well as the price.

Hopefully MG finds some buyers for this and keeps it alive
