Considering the current offering of EVs Nexon and Tiago are on the older X1 platform. |
I think you are mistaken. NEXON is on the X1 'Vista' platform and TIAGO is based on the X0 platform based on Gen 1 Indica.

Good to know TML has started testing EV on Alpha platform!
Will have to wait and watch what advantage Alpha platform has over the X1 platform. |
True. ALFA platform is more agile and lighter than both X0 and X1 platform. It is more sturdy keeping the weight under check. I think it negates the weight factor that Nexon has with the weight of the platform and battery making it heavy. So a smaller battery can deliver the range that Nexon gives with a larger size battery pack.

I think here, as the platform is lighter, I feel that TATA might give a smaller battery pack than you expect. You can get a choice of 2 battery packs. The first one maybe 25 kwh battery pack and the higher end models may get somewhere between 32-35 kwh. As this is on the AFLA platform, this is where the new range of electric cars on modular platform that has been made for electrification, Range between 350-450 kms can be achieved. If that is done, then it will be a run away success for sure.
This is more important product for Tata than tiago.ev. Given how much people are loving Punch ICE, this will sell incredibly well. I think it will beat tiago.ev in monthly sales for sure. Kudos to TATA for rapidly increasing their .EV portfolio.
I am sold out already, this is great. All the best features and advantages of Punch with the added advantages of an EV powertrain. The only thing which worries me is the TML after sales and services support. I have had a very poor experience of after sales support and Product Quality with my Hexa ownership and this is the single biggest factor preventing me from looking towards Tata again for my next change. But they seem to be miles ahead of their competitors when it comes to EVs.
This is it! With this & the Altroz EV up next, Tata will cover the entire spectrum for mainstream EVs and they will also boast about doing this for 5+ years now! No manufacturer comes close. Kudos Tata! Awesome is just that word.
I honestly feel, Tata deserves #2 Spot, purely on account of their products. What holds them from gaining that distance between #3 & #2 is the poor ASS, which they continue to ignore and are in-fact more arrogant about it. IF they don't fix it - people will shy away from Tata & also from this brilliant products.
Excellent to see a test mule of this at long last. Was beginning to worry a bit about the lack of sightings that the Punch EV programme was on the back burner a bit.
Conservatively can we estimate a launch by the end of this calendar year or will that be too soon?
I'm also intrigued by the fact that I haven't noticed much in the way of Altroz EV noise. Are the Altroz and Punch built on the same platform? Would it theoretically be fairly simple to port over the EV platform components, packaging concerns notwithstanding? A concern I have is, going by the most recent sales numbers, the Altroz does nowhere near the sort of numbers of the Punch, will that mean it's low priority, like will the onus be on getting the Harrier EV out next after the Punch EV? (Asking as a fan of hatchbacks, just don't want to give in on this crossover trend entirely)
It's really heartening to see Tata slowly working to offer EV variants of their entire product portfolio, great news for customers and I imagine shareholders too, considering the brand is not sitting on their laurels in this segment.
I will let go of my ICE Punch top-variant for this eagerly awaited launch.

The squarish element on the front bumper looks like a radar for ADAS. However I am not sure about this. |
I believe it is there to hide the .EV badge.
Is it too soon for the obligatory RIP MG Comet and Citroën eC3 thread? :p

RIP MG Comet, Citroën eC3? I think it might even dent Nexon Prime's sales.
The dealer's have been downplaying news of the Punch saying it is delayed, urging customers to book the Nexon (personally seen it).
Hope TATA does not get carried away by it's anticipated success and overprice it.
Nexon EV's pricing fiasco post Mahindra XUV400 launch.rl:
Did feel bad for a few folks i knew personally.
The only thing I can imagine of complaining about would be the infotainment screen and instrument cluster if they're not updated. Other than that with features like rear discs, maybe auto hold and the driving experience of an EV, this is a runaway success in the making. If they don't go overboard with the pricing that is. They've even added an armrest at the front!

Tata usually place the EV badge on front grill, and they could have masked that badge by the masking tape. The square shaped element is placed on the front bumper for some unknown purpose.

Expect the price to start at 13.50-14 lakhs then!
Nexon EV prime base model starts at 14.49 lakhs.
I have a feeling Punch EV will get 24-27kW of battery. Now the thing to be obeserved more will be that whether Punch EV gets battery fitted below the rear seat and the boot or they go the NexonEV way of putting it under the floor.
Punch will be the first ALPHA platform EV. TaMo talked about modifying ALPHA heavily to get an EV on the ALPHA platform. So we can expect better handling compared to Tiago, Tigor, or even Nexon EVs.
I expect a >30kW battery or more with PunchEV and better packaging than Nexon EV.
The Punch EV couldn't come sooner. Such a great city car that is equally home on the highway, except for that anaemic 1.2l lump!!! Addresses both the performance and fuel efficiency issues of the Punch.

:thumbs up Thanks for pointing it out, didn't even notice it. Also looks far more modern than the Nexon's central console, though lots of unutlised space given that there is no visible cupholders/ storage and all place is taken up by the buttons. Electronic buttons and knobs are supposed to clear up space taken up by mechnanical levers and linkages, yet we see many modern cars wasting space by giving prominence to buttons that can be relegated to the dashboard.
My guess is this will be slotted between Tiago and Nexon, pricing should be similar to Tigor. TML has a headache since this one will easily kill Tigor.
