I'm really curious to know how the almost daily charge cycle affects the battery health especially since the Kona comes with an NMC chemistry. During the recent service, I asked the service advisor to check the state of health and expectedly it was showing 100%. Would be nice to know how much of that buffer gets used up after a while.

Off topic : Can anyone guide me on what were the discounts offered on the last of the Konas? Looking at a 2023 kona in MH where the dealer claims on road was 25L when the car was discontinued. I find this hard to believe.
TIA.

Last heard values were almost close to 20L + Road tax applicable in that state.
Unless you are getting very good discount, you should reconsider putting such a substantial amount on a highly outdated model.(Unless of course you like the vehicle dynamics that is.)

The below article gives a good insight on this. Depth of discharge is an important aspect, it is better to keep the battery between 20 - 80 %.

https://batteryuniversity.com/articl...ased-batteries

As per Hyundai manual, it is recommended to charge the battery to 100% using AC if the percentage drops below 20%, or once a month is recommended.

Re: A 1000 kms round-trip to buy a Hyundai Kona | EDIT: 10000 km review on page 5

Apologies to my good friend GKR9900 for hijacking this thread temporarily.

As you all know, after much consultation, test driving, agonising, and hours of yakety-yak with him, EV Fan, and various other Distinguished Members of the League of EV Gentlemen, I bought my Hyundai Kona in March.

I've mostly used it in the city since. I did 2 drives to Krishnagiri and back and managed it on one single charge both times. But it is not a big distance. I also did two Bangalore Mysore Bangalore trips but I did charge the vehicle at Mysore at the Mall of Mysore.

It has taken me until last week to find the time to go to Ooty in the Kona. And Ooty and Coorg are my most visited destinations.

The car’s state of charge was at about 75-80% when we started because I had charged a week earlier and used the car here and there in the city.

As usual, it was only me and my wife and our relatively light luggage.

We stopped at Swad Mysore for a quick breakfast. Sadly the Jio BP charger there is still not functional.

We then stopped at Shell outside of Mysore for a fast charge up to 83%. It was at 17% and it took 40mins so we had some coffee and hung around chatting with the serving lady. And then we attacked the rest of the drive including the steep Sigur Ghat. The Kona performed perfectly. The instant torque and responsive behaviour are very very enjoyable.

Upon reaching our destination I saw that we still had 99kms of range left. Later that day I charged the car back to 85% for our local usage. And then after driving about 85-90 kms locally up and down the hills the next day, I found the charge had come down to 62% so I charged it back up to 83% to be prepared fot my return journey.

Then we did the return journey and it was very nice to see how the natural regen helped maintain the SOC and range down to Mudumalai.

We reached Mysore (Shell) with around 199kms range left. I guess I could have attempted the Mysore Bangalore run. But I chose to be prudent and charged the car for about 25 mins while we ate a small meal next door. Returning to the car we found it had reached 83% so I stopped charging and drove back to Bangalore, reaching home with 111kms range left.

I find the eco mode and level 1 regen is nice and I do use the regen paddles much like one would use the gear paddles in an ICE car. I frankly drove all the way on the highway at speeds around 85-95kmph. Im really not into Hypermiling and all those things to increase range.

I just want to enjoy my car without caring too much and falling victim to this insidious ‘range anxiety’.

In the hills, I always stay well within the sensible speed limit, irrespective of all my years of experience, driving around those hills.

The Kona feels solidly planted and handles very nicely indeed with its low centre of gravity - battery located under the car. It is absolutely fun to drive on the highway and in the hills too. I never thought I would like an EV so much. But I certainly love my Kona.

One has to change the driving thinking and driving style in an EV as compared to an ICE. It is not necessary to start with full charge and nor is it necessary to top up to full every time. Just keep using and charging when needed just like the mobile phone or watch. No need to get obsessed and tense with trying to ‘will’ the charger to take the car to 90-95%….it is much easier if one breaks all these taboos.

Also, I mostly charge using public and private charging infrastructure - fast chargers usually and once in a while plugging it into my office. But then considering I drive an average of 500kms a month in this car my charging also happens only around once or twice a month or so when in the city and obviously as described here, more frequently when on a road trip.

One allows for charging stops and food breaks. And generally goes at an easier pace. And the interesting thing is in an EV one tends to hear better and somehow enjoy the journey more calmly with some nice music and conversation and watching life go by, unlike in a fast ICE car where one feels instinctively like listening to the engine growl and play with the gears and generally ‘send it’. But then, one can accelerate fiercely when needed and accomplish overtaking maneuvres with consummate ease. EV acceleration is ‘teeth blisteringly addictive’ as I have opined in the past. (But it also drinks the juice nicely if one fiddles too much with the accelerator.)

In conclusion:

I'm happy overall with my first Blr-Nilgiris-Blr EV trip.
The total charging cost incurred was around 1600-1800 Rupees…and the performance of the car in the hills and thise lovely curvy twisty roads was excellent. The Ground clearance is more than adequate for my needs. The smooth acceleration is lovely. The vehicle is Stable and planted and highly confidence-inspiring.

If it had been AWD instead of FWD then that would have been the icing on the cake. But, as expressed before, I love the FWD Kona’s size and proportions much more than I do, those of the AWD Kia EV6 and the RWD Ioniq5.

Best of all, compared to my erstwhile petrol AT Thar, where a trip like this always costs me 10,000Rs and more, this Kona is a whole world apart.

From the perspective of my pocket and the fuel costs, I am very happy that I sold that Thar and bought the Kona.

Ok so you did the elusive Bangalore Ooty trip. I recall you always wanted an EV that can do it with zero charge stops. Did you find the one charging stop irritating. I suppose not. It’s just a quirk non ev owners have until they eventually move to EVs.

Congrats on your ride. The white Kona is lovely.

Finally, that elusive trip has happened. I remember the talks we had on how the ability to do this one trip without breaking a sweat would be the decider in your purchasing an EV. I'm glad to see you come out of it with flying colors. Drive on mate!

Not sure if you bought it, but it is a well rounded and accomplished car. You should be able to get it for 18-19 odd lacs considering that it is the last one left. Yes the On Road price at one time was 25 lacs.
But while it is a lovely car, it is outdated now and discontinued too, so you should be able to grab it at a solid discount.
It is a very solidly built car and a real pleasure to own. I love mine.

Congrats on the Kona!

It's a competent EV with great efficiency.

What I love about the car is the ability to regulate how much power the car draws on both AC and DC.

This is very useful when plugging it into old electrical circuits at hotels, homestays etc.

Charging infra in and Bangalore has developed significantly. Couple of trips and you won't be checking any apps or planning these things out.

Hope you have many happy miles on your car!

Hi GKR9900 - (apologies for again hijacking your thread..) But I seriously cant appreciate the Kona more! It is a great car.
I am right now on its second mid-long distance trip.
I drove my Kona to Wyanaad for a wedding.
Only me and wife and usual luggage of 2 suitcases and two small bags. Had Charged on last Saturday to 96%. Statiq at Doubletree Hilton Sarjapura Road and the cost was Rs 408/-. Kms reading was 3572 kms. Car was idle after that.
Started yesterday morning with about 95% charge at 530am with the kms at 3576. Lights on. AC on. Music on. Wipers on. Eco Mode throughout (which is more than enough). Cruise at 97-98kmph. Used the Nice road to get out of Bangalore and the Mysore Highway after that. Reached Shell on the Nanjangud to Ooty Road - I was down to 37% so left the car to charge at Shell. The car was at 3744kms. 172kms covered since the last charge.
Went and ate breakfast with my friends and came back an hour later and it had reached 96%. Paid 723/- - Shell charging is somewhat more expensive. Drove to Wyanaad after taking one wrong turn by following the road naturally towards Chamarajnagar - ha ha! I never normally do things like that but yesterday instead of taking the lower left road I just followed the road contours to the upper right on to the bridge towards Chamarajnagar.
Anyway then I had to drive much faster than normal to catch up with the friends. Met them after the Gundlupet turn off. And drove through Muthanga and Kalpetta and Sulthan Bathery and Banasura Dam and all that to reach the destination. Beautiful forests and lovely curvy roads.
(I saw one Grey and Black Kona inside the Wyanaad Sanctuary going towards Gundlupet. But did not take a photo though I did flash my headlamps as an acknowledgement of the ‘same-brand-car’. No answer though!).
I ve not been to the Wayanaad region in 27 plus years. And it was nice to re visit. Love the Kona and its behaviour on these roads. Loved using the paddle shifter-like regen-controls to leverage braking and brake-retardation. Feels really good and being and active user of the paddles on my Cooper, it comes naturally on the Kona too.
Went and parked at the Tata Power charger at Taj Wayanaad. The Kms reading at the Destination is 3899kms. Covered 155kms on undulating terrain and at higher than normal speeds.
Started charging but the charger would not work. So had to get it reset by the ‘base’. Found I was at 40%. So charged back uo to 97% in an hour and a half. Paid Rs 563/-. Now the car is idle.
Lets see how far I can get with this on the way back. Spent so far Rs 1694/- on this trip.
Distance covered between Bangalore and Mysore via Nice Road etc between the two charges was 172kms. Distance covered after that is 155kms. Total kms travelled is 327kms. The cost has been Rs 5.18 per Km.
To cover the same distance in my Petrol Thar (now sold) I would have used probably 50 litres of petrol and spent Rs 5200/- Any day the Kona offers a good saving apart from being more comfortable, silent and totally fatigue-free. I am thoroughly enjoying the ownership and my wife is greatly appreciating the comfort of this car.

Re: A 1000 kms round-trip to buy a Hyundai Kona | EDIT: 10000 km review on page 5

Returning from Wayanaad today with a reading of 3899kms on the clock, we drove 155 kms till that same Nanjangud-Mysore-Shell pump.

A very Good experience driving the Kona on the lovely Wayanaad roads. And seeing those lovely young elephants peacefully browsing by the road side was a really heartwarming sight. I love elephants. God’s beautiful creatures.

And seeing as the SOC was 47% we chose to eat lightly at Ruchi Mane and charge up for 30-35 mins before heading towards Bangalore.
Brought it up to 81%, paid Rs 408/- and drove off along the Expressway to Bangalore.
Uneventful overall. Excellent speed limit observance and lane discipline shown by all the road users today.
The Kona of course, is superbly responsive, handles really well on the curvy bits and its explosive acceleration leaves all the other traffic far behind instantly. One can be fearless particularly when overtaking.

Reaching home with a 4225 kms reading I note there was 75kms range showing which means probably 37-38% battery SOC. Will charge it again and see later.
Thing is for the entire trip of 654 kms the total spend was only Rs 2124/- in total. So we are seeing Rs 3.25 per km on this trip. Which I think is very very reasonable.

Now that I have done 2 proper road trips with the Kona I am very comfortable overall. With just a little thought and a little care when planning, plus inculcating a certain light level of ‘flex’, one need not succumb to the ogre of ‘range anxiety’.

Charging infra is improving day by day. And considering the comfort of the EV and the cost efficiencies involved, I am very happy to have purchased the Kona and am genuinely enjoying the driving experience.

Lucky you. Both for the Kona and for the elephant sighting. An EV is in many ways the best option when going out into the wild next only to say a bicycle. Silent and clean.

The story of almost every EV owners out there. Decide to take the plunge, having butterflies in the stomach on their first road trip, then getting used to the (minimal amount of) planning, and finally wondering what the fuss was all about. The advantages of the drive train just blows away any other minor disadvantage.

Now tell me would you ever want to go back to driving an ICE car particularly if you cannot afford those German ones. You do not have to reply, I know the answer.

My garage has one classical growly german which I love and one lovely compact Japanese 4x4. And of course the EV. I want to hold on to all these.
I get joy from EV’s and ICE cars.

Re: A 1000 kms round-trip to buy a Hyundai Kona | EDIT: 10000 km review on page 5

I am glad that shankar.balan has periodically updated this thread when I got too busy doing it, but here's my contribution!

It has been quite some time since I took my light fury for a longish trip. There was a Perumbavoor-Trivandrum - 460 kms round trip - that I had planned a while back to see some of my relatives at Trivandrum. But work and family commitments kept pushing it back. As fate would have it, I ended up doing 3 such trips within 3 weeks due to some family reasons. With each trip, I patted myself on the back for picking up the Kona.

The first one was on October 2nd. I didn’t spend much time planning as I was fairly confident that the Kona would make the trip without charging as it could easily do 320kms in a full charge. But boy, did the car surpass my expectations! My dad and I were traveling together and we decided to take MC road, as the Alappuzha Kollam road was having heavy construction. There were also ample chargers along this route, should the need arise. This route also had many hills, so the frequent ups and downs could help in regen. We decided to start at around 6 am. The entire journey took around 6 hours including a charging stop/breakfast that lasted 25 mins.

After completing the family visits at Trivandrum, we headed back the next day.
A 1000 kms round-trip to buy a Hyundai Kona | EDIT: 10000 km review on page 5-at_temple.jpg

While returning, caught up with EV fan at his home before coming back to my hometown. The return trip took slightly longer at 6.5 hours.
A 1000 kms round-trip to buy a Hyundai Kona | EDIT: 10000 km review on page 5-efficiency_figures.jpg
The efficiency for the trip was around 10.3 km/kwh (forgot to click the pic of onwards trip). This was with 2 adults on board, mainly eco mode, AC at 23.5 degrees, and driver-side ventilated seat on throughout the journey. Extrapolating, these figures are good for 400+kms, which was spectacular.

During our return trip, had a puncture on the left rear tyre.
A 1000 kms round-trip to buy a Hyundai Kona | EDIT: 10000 km review on page 5-nails_in_tyre.jpg
The TPMS promptly alerted us about the puncture.
A 1000 kms round-trip to buy a Hyundai Kona | EDIT: 10000 km review on page 5-puncture_repair.jpg
Luckily, there was a tyre repair shop close by and the puncture was fixed.

The second trip happened on 13th October. All other settings were the same as the last journey except for the fact that the return was in sports mode, and there were 5 adults on board.

The round trip took almost 12 hours.

Midnight juice up

The third trip happened on 19th October. By now, I was getting hung up on the sports mode and didn’t want to dial down to eco mode anymore for long journeys, especially with other passengers in the car. The efficiency figures were again stellar.
A 1000 kms round-trip to buy a Hyundai Kona | EDIT: 10000 km review on page 5-eff_trip_3.jpg
The return trip included some peak hour traffic and idling, so the time taken was also longer.

20000kms service update
Before the third trip, I completed my 20k kms service at Popular Hyundai, Kochi. This was a free service and the payments were only for brake fluid, air filter, and windshield washer fluid which came up to Rs 3300. The problem was after that when I went to New Bharath tyres to get the rotation, balancing, and alignment done. These guys always used to do a fine job, but this time the car was pulling to the left post-alignment. I couldn’t notice the pull until I got to a reasonably spaced road, but by then I was almost home and couldn’t go back to them to get it corrected.
A 1000 kms round-trip to buy a Hyundai Kona | EDIT: 10000 km review on page 5-tire_rotation.jpg
Got the alignment checked again by a local tyre shop and it was corrected.

Ending this post with a rant to Hyundai. I know they have to make space for the Creta EV, but the Kona is such a sweet sweet car. Why did you guys have to pull the plug on it? Even with the small (by today’s standards) battery, it eeks out unreal efficiency numbers without driving as if there’s a landmine underneath one’s feet. I have become an EV fanatic (no pun intended to EV fan), and I have gone ahead and purchased a Comet EV a few months back. More on that in a later post.

Nice to see you enjoy Kona! My Kona has completed 20000 kms and it has been a joy. Just completed ahmedabad to Ujjain and omkareshwar trip and it was a 1050 kms trip with utmost comfort. Bp jio chargers were available and with proper planning and a range of more than 340 kms, I could complete the trip easily
Wishing you many happy miles ahead. Yes! Kona is still one of the best in our market and I feel Hyundai had to pull the plug to make way for creta ev.
