Re: MG Windsor EV Review

MG has a great product. However, they should bring the bigger battery option soon. Once the initial novelty wears off, even existing owners will find the current range insufficient.

Also, the price delta between the batteries will hardly be a lakh, which will result in existing customers fuming over getting shortchanged. With the bigger battery, its a wholesome future proofed product that can be enjoyed for its full road tax life cycle of 15 years.

Agree. But given the rush for this product, MG will probably increase the price of this itself by 1-2 lakhs first. They have said that this price is introductory. It remains to be seen whether that's just a blank threat

Most pre-launch reviews predicted this car to be priced several lakhs higher, although with the bigger battery. But not 1 lakh.

If the price of this product increases by 1.5 lakhs, then the price of the car with a bigger battery will be 3 lakhs more.

Nevertheless, people who really need to buy a new car now (sold the old car, or the older car is too troublesome) should consider buying now. Otherwise, wait, the EV options and prices will come down in the next 3-4 years.

AC seems good enough for winter in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. I didn't find any issues. However, we need to check its performance during the summer.

Re: MG Windsor EV Review

Hi
Can anyone confirm if connected car tech allows to precool the car from the app via mobile? Will be a necessity if such a huge glass area is difficult for the air con to cover in peak summers.
If yes, is it available in all 3 variants?

Regards

Yes it works, I have tried the precool feature with the MG iSMART app in the Essence variant.

Re: MG Windsor EV Review

Anyone figured or successfully used Free Charging via partner app ?
I followed the instructions SA told me and tested first public charging from MG e-hub app, via Jio-BP Pulse 60KW charger.
e-hub was showing 100% Free for Windsor banner, I installed the Jio-BP app and then clicking Open Partner app from MG e-hub app auto-opens QR scanner for the Jio-BP app.
So far, this is the workflow SA had told me.

But the Jio-BP app told me I had 0 balance and I added 500Rs. and did the charging, and got charged Rs. 300.
SA had told me not to do any recharge/balance in partner app but without adding any balance the app wouldn't let proceed to start charging.

PS: Got my Turquoise Green color delivered today 15.5L ex-showroom, 60k insurance MG-Secure Elite (via Reliance), 15k TCS, 4k RTO (file charges, actual RTO is 0 in UP) and 41k for accessories as I took a lot (actually quite a few of them were out of stock as my own estimate was 70k)

Not able to edit my post so updating about the Free Charging, talked to e-hub customer care and seems there are 2 types of chargers/partners shown in the app.

1. Completely integrated in e-hub with in-app payment, these chargers are 100% free to use and you can use the "Payable Chargers" filter to see them (they will still be free).

2. Partner chargers with their own (external) app, e-hub app will take you to the partner's app. All of them are still not fully integrated for Free Charging system, so chances are just like me you might have to load some balance and pay for it.
However, you can download the invoice of that charge session (through partner app) and claim reimbursement from MG e-hub, which they do via UPI in 3 days time.

They are saying within a month's time, all the chargers (even external partners) will be seamless and free to use without needing reimbursement.

I just filed for my Rs. 300 reimbursement so lets see.

Reimbursement Form shared by MG e-hub team
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...LP5pA/viewform

----------------------------------
Also, I took the car for a spin with 4 of us in it, and I personally didn't feel any problems with suspensions, on contrary coming from a German Sedan, the potholes or bad road didn't even feel as much as in a sedan, so I was quite satisfied.
I will try to lower my Tyre's PSI (currently 38) to see if it does anything, but nonetheless, I am satisfied.

Now as for AC, here is my feedback from today 6PM-2AM in Delhi-NCR, it took a little hit and miss to understand how to deal with it as at time of delivery we felt it was not cooling enough, specially at rear.
But I think that happens when using Auto Climate Control, the fan doesn't run fast enough as much as you can dial it up manually.
The car got super cold by using 23c and manual fan speed of 4.
Rear seats were complaining of not getting enough air, so we increased the fan speed but then front rows got super chilly.
So what we did was, closed two out of four front vents and diverted other two vents away from us (hands/chest) and that way whole car got super cool super fast.
But yes, real test will be in Summers.

These are all the accessories I wanted, and the ones ticked are what I took (except the sun shades, will get them in summer) as rest were out of stock, but order placed.

Highly recommend the rear bull bar, its very high quality and blends completely with the car's rear black spoiler. Will protect your back from all the 2-wheelers and autos, etc.
One complaint though is that it bugs the Rear Parking sensor so whenever you Reverse, your rear sensor will always be triggered.

Some of the exterior cosmetic items (garnish) were probably not needed, but we got them simply to protect the car and its edges as much as possible. Like the door edge guard, bumper corner protection, etc.

Other than those, we received a Hanging Ganesh Garnish, Vintage Perfume, Tissue Box, MG document folder and a ceramic coffee mug as free gifts, which I think is offered to every car purchase.
Other than the above, we got a complimentary cake, in-dealership Pandit-ji to do the car pooja and small planted pot as well.

So far really satisfied with the car, not just me but my wife and brother in-law/sister too, all of us who are used to the creep comfort and power of 2022 Octavia which we let go.

The screen gonna get some used to though.

Works in the exclusive variant too. Since the excite variant misses out on most connected car features, I doubt whether it would work in that.

Once I turn on the AC using the app sitting far away from the car, it says it will switch it off automatically after 10 mins for safety purposes.

Re: MG Windsor EV Review

Could the new owners (congrats to your folks) give your experience with the following questions that I have:
- How is in-city driving, does the car seem too bulky and less maneuverable (eg in Bangalore traffic) given its large size. Which car would you compare it with for maneuverability, is it Innova or Scorpio or XUV700, or ... ?

- How are feeling about the low position of the head-lights? Does it remain hidden when following a vehicle or the dipper works fine for you?

Hi shubhank008, Congratulations on your Windsor EV purchase. Wish you will have enjoyable experience in years to come.

Do let us know the actual range (100% to 10%) in typical NCR weather (which is still slightly hot during the day and very dusty and smoggy)

Re: MG Windsor EV Review

I took the delivery of my Windsor EV exclusive (starburst black) yesterday. Here is my experience so far.

The delivery:
  • I was surprised to get an SMS in the morning from Digit and after that saw the insurance issued by the dealer is from Digit. However, it mentions motor/battery, tyre, and several other items as add-ons. The price was 60k (5k less than what they told me earlier). This was a not-so-pleasant surprise, but I thought all that matters is the claim settlement, and the dealers usually ensure that claims are handled nicely if the insurance is done from their end. A matter of the first one year. I did not make a fuss about it and focussed on being happy.
  • The only accessories I got were the mud-flaps. They said the 3D mats were expected after Diwali. This meant that I have paid 15.61 lakhs to them, out of which I still have about 5.5k left with them. They will either refund it or adjust it when the mats arrive.
  • At around 2 pm, there were 4 other Windsors getting ready for delivery in the showroom. Including my car, three were black, one white and one green. For those who like the look of the car, it looks great in all colors. In this showroom they kept a black car on display for many days, so I guess more people booked black. Or, it may be a preference correlated with region.
  • The display car inside the showroom is now a base excite version. Got to see the smaller screen, fabric upholstery and non-alloy wheels. It's nothing bad, but stepping up one variant makes a lot of difference.
  • The formalities did not take much time and I was on my way.

Now, coming to my experience with the car. Note that the only cars I have driven extensively are Getz, Cruze AT (diesel, TC), Polo GT TSI (Turbo petrol, DCT) and a Kwid AMT (NA petrol, AMT). In recent years, I have only taken test drives on Seltos DCT, Sonet DCT, Kushaq DCT, Nexon EV and Punch EV.
  • As mentioned in the reviews, the car feels bigger than Nexon EV and it should. However, it is not difficult to manoeuvre in traffic. The steering is good. It is a big and high car, so the handling is not like the Polo or even Kushaq, but that’s not the reason one would buy this car.
  • The suspension is most similar to Seltos among the cars I have driven, may be slightly softer. But I like it. It may not even be the most comfortable in the segment, but it’s not bad.
  • I have no issue with the road noise (the top speed I hit was 77km/h). I think people would complain about the road noise because either they are used to cars of higher segments, or they are not considering the fact that due to no engine sound, the road noise is the only sound we get. Don’t know if Nexon is slightly better, but I have no complain here.
  • The auto-headlamp feature saves me the need to use the screen for the headlamp. Interestingly, it switches on even when the car is going through a road with a lot of shade due to a lot of trees. I would have liked to tune the threshold, but I think that’s not possible.
  • The headlamps are good. I tested it last night and I was very happy with the performance. They are low and that’s not bad.
  • The MG iSmart App is nice. Using such a thing for the first time, so no basis for comparison though. But it works well.
  • I particularly loved the smart flush door handles. Not only that they open when I get closed to the car with the key, they also close automatically when I move away. No need to switch anything off, I just press the park switch and get out. All these years, I had a tendency of worrying about whether I had locked the car after I parked it somewhere. That worry is gone.
  • To take a photo, once I got out of the car and my son inside. The key was with me. As I moved a bit far, the alarm set off. I guess it detected passenger inside while the car was supposed to be locked because the person with the key was away.
  • The exclusive variant does not have ambient light. So, the area surrounding the golden pseudo-speakers look a bit empty. However, that’s only if you knew what to expect there.
  • The auto fan speed calibration of the AC is a bit low if it is sunny outside, bringing a lot of light and heat inside. The fan speed can be adjusted from 0 to 10 I guess, and the auto-speed is usually low. Subhank has written about his workaround on this topic. May be MG should consider a software upgrade here. Manual intervention with the AC fan speed would solve the problem I think (even in summer). The AC is not weak, it’s just the sub-optimal fan speed.
  • I drove 29km this morning in 1:30 hours at the expense of 12% charge, in normal driving and normal regeneration mode. The traffic was slightly heavier than usual. Extrapolating this gives a range of about 240km in average city conditions in Kolkata (not light traffic, but not summer). Over time my estimates will converge to a more accurate value.
  • The heavy regen mode is not bad, but coming from ICE cars, I don’t like regen much yet. For my driving style, I see myself sticking to normal. The Eco drive mode felt clearly underpowered, not my type unless I need to extract range desperately.
  • The bluetooth works fine, no issues there. The quality of the audio system is decent. I would like a bit more bass (note that the exclusive variant does not have the subwoofer) if possible by tweaking some settings (yet to try that).

Thank you very much.
To be honest, there is no way to figure out any kind of realistic actual range, everyone will get different results due to their driving habits or how much pressure they put on motor (some people like to speed away after red light for example) and similarly what AC/settings they use.

I think only after a couple months of use we can figure out our own driving style's average range.
Many people are quoting 250-260KM with mixed highway-city usage.
I for one consider 240KM or even 220KM as a very safe range while planning trips.

If you are range anxious, then you should try what I tell everyone to do.
Open PlugShare website, set your car's max range to 240 or even 200KM and then start browing different routes or trips you might want to do or your points of interest.

All that matters is if there are enough chargers in between your Point A to Point B.

I had saved up lots of trips while waiting for my car's delivery, and I can tell you can even go from Delhi to Nepal (Kathmandu) given none of the chargers in between fail, and thats solely on Public Chargers.
Many hotels do let you do AC charging overnight as well for some money (like 500Rs.)

Sure I would have also preferred a 300KM range, but I don't mind 240 or even 200 as long as I can travel between my points of interest (for road trips), all that changes is maybe 1 or 2 extra stops to juice up the car, for like 40-60 mins (for 2 stops).

Here are some of the trips I had saved up after mapping the public chargers within my safe range (240KM~), only tricky one is Jaisalmer, where the last stretch/distance between chargers is almost on edge of 240KM, but that is also doable in optimal driving conditions (or planning ahead and schedule a RSA call to see if they can bring remote charging to your next stop )
You get 3 years unlimited free RSA, so make use of it. RSA even includes remote charging for a lot of locations.

Very succinctly put and 100% agree with you. I myself did this, as a thought exercise, with a setting of 180-200km( very conservative estimate for the Punch LR i am considering) and have found that 80-90% of my planned trips are easily possible with this range.

Re: MG Windsor EV Review

Does anyone know how or where to sell the 7.4KW charger that comes free ? I cannot make use of it due to apartment rules and already have a 3KW charger installed, so want to sell it off.

Also, did my 2nd free public charging yesterday, such a nice feeling knowing you are driving a EV (supposed to be already cheap) for free.
Got some coffee and food, drove the car to parking of Le Meriden Delhi, put it on charging (for free) and enjoyed my food and coffee in meantime.

Other than some of the controls/screen nuances, really loving the car.
One big safety hazard I realized yesterday is, if you have Child Window Lock on, but turn off/on the car, the setting resets and you need to turn on child lock again and again, which was not the case in my previous car.

We have a curious Shih Tzu dog which travels with us a lot and yesterday he opened the rear windows while we thought they would be Child Locked from our previous ride, but learnt it the hard way that the settings reset.

Secondly, finding the headlamps (specially high beam) really inadequate in Delhi-NCR during evening/night, planning to get them replaced.

Did anyone figure out the sweet spot for Tyre PSI for a softer ride ? For top/18" variant, currently mine are at 35PSI
