Re: MG Windsor EV Review

Yesterday I read on a news article on cartoq that MG is working on 50Kwh variant and might launch it in first half of 2025.

Any news from the dealers about the same?

In delhi ncr most dealers have very little genuine information regarding anything related to Windsor.

Even allocation to dealers is very poor. In Noida most dealers are hardly delivering 1 or 2 Windsor in a day. Although they say they have more than a 100-150 bookings already. They might have production constraints or artificially creating shortage to show very high demand supply ratio.
When first checked the car , the dealer said that minimum waiting is 3/4 months. While Booking another agent in the same showroom said that they are confident of providing delivery for exclusive or essence variant in white/black colour within 30-45 days if we provide them with all requisite papers soon so that they may pre-approve loan. Some of the dealers have ready delivery of excite variant.

None of them have any reliable information on
1. Any expected price increase post December 2023.
2. " Lifetime warranty" if it will offered to post December deliveries. Or if it will be offered to non BAAS buyers also.
3. No information on installation support. Some say installation is free only for Essense variant. Length of cable provided for free with each variant or type of charger.

Everything is so much in dark.

I personally don't think the prices will increase post December as market is already cooled off with not much waiting for any car now. If you see in case of most cars even newly launched ones there has not been any price increase since last 6 months. Infact most companies are offering discounts even on popular models also.

Looking at the scenario it might actually be a good idea to wait for 50Kwh variant. Without much price increase or premium over what they are offering now.
If they price it anything more than 15-16 lakhs atleast in Uttar Pradesh (zero registration charges) they will be going into the Territories of hybrids(Grand vitara or Hyryder). Even hybrids are easily available now without any waiting and even discounts. They would seem to offer better value in case the price of 50Kwh is priced more.
I don't think they can delay the launch of 50kwh much as newer launches from maruti and Mahindra are anticipated soon
What are the thoughts of others regarding this?

There is a possibility they might sending more deliveries in markets where there is no taxation advantages to hybrids or where EVs offer significant tax advantages over other such as diesels or petrols even.

As per Mumbai dealer MG will mostly refrain from launching a bigger battery pack for Windsor as that might canablise ZS EV sales and other new launches planned for next year.

Re: MG Windsor EV Review

Even I heard the same from my dealer.

But in case MG delays 50kwh after launch of newer EVs from Mahindra or maruti which might offer better value. They will fail to fully capitalise on the new car euphoria.

Anyway MG is hardly selling any MG ZS EV. The numbers are just too low. It might be a better idea for them to launch 50kwh of Windsor soon, capitalise on new car euphoria before newer EV launches. Discontinue ZS EV and relaunch it at a later date in updated avtaar.
Also there is another uncertainty about central policies. There are voices within government of discontinuing Taxation Sobs to EVs gradually or introduce similar taxation benefits to hybrids. Such a move will reduce EV sales considerably. So it's better for a company like MG to go full blast at a new launch product before any such move from central government.

Re: MG Windsor EV Review

I have mostly decided to delay Windsor purchase. I am most likely going for 6E and just won't be following up on Windsor anymore. Will allow them to take as much time as possible and not cancel the booking outright. I am guessing they will launch 50kwh version and not risk going for any price hikes.

Just keeping my fingers crossed that Mh government doesn't impose any road tax on EVs.

Re: MG Windsor EV Review

So completed my 2500KMs in 28 days, majority of it driven in Delhi-NCR with night drives and what not, overall very pleasant experience and a perfect bang for buck.
Only some shortcomings I see are in the Screen Software and its options itself, for which I am sending feedbacks to MG hoping they address them through software updates.

Now recently did our first roadtrip Delhi-Bathinda-Delhi, total 850KMs driven overall.
Fantastic experience, with most of the backseat passengers (and frontseat too) sleeping in comfort during the trip, as we all were pretty tired due to couple weddings in a row.
I for one am not able to sleep in moving vehicles (cars, trains, flights) yet even I was able to get some sound sleep at the backseats.
It's no exaggeration, but the backrow is the real comfort row in Windsor.

Regarding charging, we stopped at Rohtak and Hisar for breaks (100KMs~ apart) and charge up, both points had 60KW chargers. Same sports when returning too.
Regarding range, I guess I still have a bad habit from driving my Octavia that I push the Windsor's motor quite a bit for instant torque, so much so that these were our numbers:

Delhi to Rohtak - 200KM range (2KM/%), avg speed was 100-110kmph on expressway
Rohtak to Hisar - 230KM range (2.3KM/%), avg speed was 80-90kmph, nice highway but still some vehicles and points of breaking/regen
Hisar to Bathinda - 280KM range (2.8KM/%), avg speed 65kmph, mostly state highway but still quite empty. Interesting thing is my friend was driving this stretch and he drove quite calmly (coming from a cng/petrol car)

Similarly, during our return, my friend drove Sirsa to Rohtak roughly 200KM~ and was again able to attain 2.8KM/% range even when driving 70kmph avg this time, I think your driving style affects the range a lot.

No range anxiety as ample of charging points, Hisar to Bathinda was 175KM with no chargers on route but as backup options I knew we could detour a bit to charge if needed.
Bathinda had 2 chargers, so no problem.

One huge advice, you really need to plan your trips with a EV with keeping backup options in mind.
My trip plan was done using MG eHub due to Free Charging, but I had also looked at PlugShare for more/wider charger availability for backup if needed.

Nonetheless to say, full 850KM trip was done on Free Charging.

Re: MG Windsor EV Review

Quick question for those who have bought their Windsor EVs. How is the ride quality in the back seats on city roads? I plan to get this for my parents and my main concern has been the slightly stiff ride quality i experienced during the test drive. Can anyone confirm on this esp if they have had older people in the car and heard their viewpoint?

Re: MG Windsor EV Review

My dealer in Noida Sector 5 (Crystal) is now asking for full payment today for 10-dec delivery for white essence model, otherwise he is saying delivery is possible only in Jan end or Feb. My booking was made on 12th Sep. Any suggestion on what should I do?

This has been a standard ask of many MG dealers. In fact, I was made to pay without any commitment or visibility on delivery date. I got my vehicle 10 days after making full payment.

That's great to hear! Especially after hearing a lot of criticism from reviewers. What tyre pressure was the car set to, during this trip?

Any comments on NVH? People are saying wind noise gets quite bothersome post 100km/h, does it? What about road noise?

If you've done this trip with any other vehicle in the past, how would you compare the Windsor with that?

Car was delivered at 36psi but I have been keeping it at 33psi as per some feedback of other users who otherwise felt car too stiff in NCR potholes.
But on highway/expressway, the tyres reached 36 psi by themselves due to friction/hot air, so good to keep at 33psi

Car drives through a breeze on highways or rather any good roads, even speedbreakers/potholes it handles like a champ unless and untill you face those god damn thick cemented ones, which I think would make any car jump like a coaster.
Wind or rather road noise being heard within cabin is quite common in EVs, other than a few exceptions. It doesn't bother a bit and tbh I didn't even remember/realize it till you or anyone would mention.
Normally you would have some music (even if at low volume) playing or someone to talk to or constant barrage of horns, so rarely you would ever notice it and probably within 1 week it will become like ambient noise.

The only "road noise" I noticed a bit was when driving on expressway/Asphalt, which again I think is quite common.

The car is very solidly built, you realize that by the weight of its door, bonet (however small it is), boot door and more so when you notice the thickness of its body frame (open the door and look at the thickness where normally there are skid plates or you put foot).

Also, I notice a lot of people complaining about rear thigh support, but again neither did I or any passengers notice it, the sheer positive feedback I have gotten in my circle, specially for rear seats, is just 100/100, specially the fact you can actually rest real good on long trips and catch some sleep.
I noticed it during this trip, but even the head rests are real good for head support specially if you wobble/bounce back and forth they act as cushions (as in they also move a little bit) rather than being stiff in position.

-------
My only other point of reference would be my Octavia 2022 for Delhi to Jabalpur (800-900KMs) but I don't think it would be a fair reference as I did that trip driving solo (with wife) so can't fact in any rest/no-tiredness factor like windsor.
The octavia was obviously more sportier to drive on empty highways, but also suffered a lot even with a little bit of bad roads or potholes (windsor actually handles them almost like a proper suv).

One indirect advantage with EVs I guess is you are "forced" to make stops in between to charge up, which also lets you stretch and relax a bit, otherwise in ICE cars you would be more time-skeptical to reach as fast as possible.

I liked the driving comfort a lot. No fatigue at all. Comparison is with Ecosport. The space inside gives a very good feel. Rear seat is just superb. My sub 4m SUV now feels like a mini car. Very very easy to drive car. It is a highway car and deserved a bigger battery pack. However for my driving I don’t think I can use the entire range without a break in between.

I drove Astor and then realised how stiff the suspension is in Windsor. Astor just glides over the uneven roads. Windsor is better than Ecosport ( so was not bothered by it) but doesn’t compare with Astor. I should reduce the PSI and see. Even downsizing the alloy size and increasing the profile might improve ride quality but it is a costly affair.

I always hated the ICE automatics but EVs are different may be because of the instant torque we get. The ICE automatic take a fraction of second to shift down and give that push while overtaking. In EVs u can just go zoom whenever u decide to. This is a general feature with all EVs I believe not specific to Windsor.

ICE manual has its own charm though. The sound and grunt in the ICE when redlining add to the experience and nothing can match it.

I think it's a wise decision to wait if you are not in a desperate situation to buy a new vehicle. Also many new Ev's are coming up in few months.. and by then MG dealers might also get their heads in place.

Since the govt has remained the same in Maharashtra it's highly unlikely to see any change in EV policy.

I had a short trip of 90 km with all 5 passengers last week. Around 30 km was in city limits and you can feel the mild stiffness of suspension in bad city roads. (I'm coming from Honda City which had better suspension). Tyre pressure was ~ 36 psi. I'm also planning to reduce it to 33 and see whether ride comfort changes. But in highways car just glided over small humps and all. No issues at all.

It is unlikely but it can be done to compete with the launch of Suzuki E-Vitara. Even a price cut is unlikely as the Windsor has been price just right.

At today's Mahindra 6e and 9e launch the base variant with 59KWH battery started at 18.9L ex showroom. Compared to that the Windsor 38KWH starts a 13.5L. So unless the E-Vitara which has a 49KWH battery launches at say 13 to 14L ex showroom I don't see the Windsor getting a price drop.

Currently the Windsor's competition is the Nexon EV which it is systematically dethroning because of more features for less price. The current Nexon EV is 17L top end variant with 45KWH but let's not forget that an EV 1.0 platform and Windsor is an 3.0 born ev platform. The next Nexon will be an EV 2.0 platform same as Curvv and Punch. So to compete with Nexon the Windsor will have to keep a lower price. So, increasing battery capacity will make it difficult for them to maintain low price.

The Windsor Indonesian version has a 50KWH, electric tailgate, ADAS with autopark feature. So the next things coming to the Windsor will be these.

Also, this is exactly the reason I don't think the 50KWH version is coming at least till end 2025 or early 2026. The market is changing every month and hence, I expect the 50KWH version to launch at the same price of the current Windsor top end variant that is 15.5L or max 16L and the whole 38KWH lineup should decrease by 1 Lakh when 50KWH launches. The E-vitara pricing will govern this to heavy extent. Nobody understands Indian consumer better than Maruti and every car manufacturer boardroom fears them.

MG might skip ADAS once again to keep a lower price. I have seen many people not opt for ADAS although the autopark feature might change this notion.

1. I don't think price will increase post December also my delear said even if it does it will be max 25-30K.

3. So I got my site survery done recently. You get the 7.4KWH fast charger free with the top-end variant, and with the rest of the variants, I guess it is a 50K add-on.

You get upto 10meters of free installation beyond that cable cost is around Rs. 600 meter. During the survey they will tell you to get a 2 pole 40amp MCB with 10sq mm copper wire for intake and 6sq mm copper wire for earthing fitted before they come for installtion. Outake will be done by charger installation team.

If your incoming house load is less than 9-10KWH they will ask you to increase by talking to the electical company as the charger will use 7.4KWH and the house may use anywhere between 1-3kWH and lastly, they will send you a final quote on your email with bank details which you have to pay after getting the vehicle delivered. Post that they will come and install.

If you are getting one, go for it. Because no dealer is giving guarantees.

I asked around and the conclusion is nothing is going to change in EV policies in Maharasthra until the next financial year
