Re: MG Windsor EV Review

Good morning, folks.
I took delivery of my T-Green Essence EV today. Overall, I am very pleased with my experience with Jubilant Motorworks, Chord Road, Rajajinagar, Bangalore.

I had reserved my car by paying 21k on 23rd Sep. Since the number of T-green cars are very less, it took 3 months for my car to be delivered. But thankfully, I took delivery before 31 Dec and hence I am eligible for the current price as well as 1-year free charging. I was even contemplating going in for the white color in case T-green stocks were unavailable; however, my sales RM came through in the last minute and arranged for the same.

The RM, and Jubilant Motorworks, were very supportive throughout my engagement. The initial quote they gave included PPF @ 1.06 lakhs, ceramic coating @ 40k, accessories @ 40k and insurance @ 75k - all of which pushed the On-road price to 18.35 lakhs. I politely declined all of the above - the RM was very obliging and did not create any fuss. In fact, he even advised me on which insurance options I could look for and which ones to avoid.

I managed to get a pretty comprehensive insurance from Iffco Tokio for 37.7k!
Breakdown is as attached

I got a pretty good discount for the No-Claim-Bonus benefit which I transferred from my old car - the ever-reliable Chevy Optra 2.0

I was also frugal on the accessories. Here is what I finally opted for, costing a total of 21.7k:

They did not have stock of a few additional items I was looking for, like the parcel tray and bumper protectors. I will probably get them later

With this, my final On-Road price was 16.33 lakhs. My poor Optra went for a paltry 1.2 lakhs, and that is a different story altogether...

So, after a long 3 months wait, my MaxRider finally comes home!
I am yet to take it out for a spin. Will do that tomorrow as we need to get the temple puja formalities completed today. Btw, the odo was at 48 km when I took delivery, which seems good.

I tend to buy and hold my cars for a long time. I am looking forward to a similar association with my Windsor. Hoping for the best.

Congratulations for the Windsor! Looks really nice! The green is best looking I think. We would have gone for it but our Tiago is practically the same colour.

Sounds line the RM and dealer are good people. Here they’re hell bent on taking their insurance.

Congratulation on your purchase. Please check if the insurance covers the battery and motor (usually called something like EV shield or something like that). We have seen posts on TeamBHP where insurance is denied for the battery and motor if that particular coverage is not opted for and these are usually the most expensive components of the car in case of an accident/flood.

Ouch! That must hurt. My car also got scratched last week. Repainting just one door panel will cost 18k. That's way too expensive, even more than Toyota!

18K is way too much. Try GoMechanic. They charge 2.5K for one door, and it takes around 3 days to do it. Also, they claim 100% color match. You can download their app and see the prices. They repaint the whole car for 28k with roof in 8 days.

I have used Motofyx a few times earlier for denting and painting for my i20 and Ertiga, and have found them to be quite good in colour matching etc. However, given that Windsor is so new, not sure how well will they be able to match the colour! will check with them. Thanks!

Re: MG Windsor EV Review

What is the vent like design on the A pillars?

btw this is basically to defrost the side windows so that you can see out of your rear view mirrors at all times. Also helps a bit with circulation

Re: MG Windsor EV Review

Any reviews on the MG dashcam? How is the app experience and all? To those who got the MG dashcam, did you pay installation charges separately? If yes, how much was it? Also, is anyone using the Qubo Dashcam Pro 2.7k. Any reviews?

I did not pay any extra for dashcam installation. Fitting is good, wires are invisible. Total was 13.5k. Quality is good. But experience is frustrating. One needs to make sure he has started recording everytime he accesses mobile app. Else it will not start recording by itself. Next issue is that it stops recording when memory card is full. I tried to find option to record it in rotation but no idea, will ask at service center whenever I will be visiting for first service. Another issue is freezing. It just stops sometimes, no idea why. Its not temprature issue as it has frozen at nights in current winter season. I am more happy with aftermarket budget dashcams on my other vehicles.

Got both the front 4k and back 2k for 13k, nothing extra for installation and reason for going with MG Dashcam was it felt way more value for money and installation/wiring is done by them and completely hidden.
You can have it plugged into the USB-A port or in the Cig. Lighter port, I chose USB-A

So far only 2 things that irk me are, I am not satisfied with the quality. Its 4k for sure, but quality is not as great as say a mobile camera or even a go-pro (like) camera.
Hard to explain, will post some videos/pics but basically you can see a car near/infront of you clearly, its number and all, but anything further (say 2nd or 3rd car away) you cannot read number plate or as easily see things clearly.

Personally, not what I expected from a "4k cam" or maybe my expectations were too high, cause I have seen way better footages from other dashcams.

Attached a Photo captured at night from it at end of post, not the most best of lighting conditions, but gives you a idea of overall quality at night.
I will capture some day shots too, maybe daytime is better.

Second frustration is, to access the cam's storage/clips or even settings, you need to stop the recording and only then can access it. Nothing major but adds extra steps to overall usage.

The phone app is quite basic but works good enough, hell better than many other apps broken or overcomplicating stuff.
The cam itself has a screen to configure the settings, which actually is good rather than doing everything via app.

I will judge daytime's quality too, but if someone asks me, I would say try to get something with better quality at night.
Otherwise, it does its work, is value for money and the biggest advantage is wiring being done by MG itself for both front and back.

Check a setting called Loop Recording, mine is set to 5 mins and it auto-overwrites old recordings.
And yes, you need to stop recording to access gallery via mobile app and then resume recording.
But it does start recording otherwise if its restarted (car on/off).

And do get it checked, mine had crash/restart issues from day 1 (bought 10 days ago) and turned out the Power/USB cable was faulty, they did a home visit to inspect and replace the cable and all is fine since then.

Using 128GB personally, yet to see/know how much it stores but you do need a Class 10 SD card (ideally Class 10 A2)

Thank you! Yes, Iffco Tokio covers the electric motor and HV battery components against water ingression and short-circuit.

I am attaching the terms of coverage if anyone is interested.

Read the terms.

This cover is available only for the first 3 years. What about later? Can water ingress happen only for the first 3 years and then everyone with EVs should move to the Sahara / Thar desert?

Why is this so complicated? The battery is part of the total car that they are insuring under a comprehensive policy. Why does it require a separate rider?

What happens if there is an underbody hit that leads to a damaged battery?
What if there is a rear ending which damages the battery pack?
Will that be covered under the comprehensive policy?
Or the rider?

Don't they realise that battery packs will probably be cheaper to replace 3 years down the line considering the speed at which lithium and LFP battery cell prices have dropped? MG is charging < ₹10k/kWh for the pack (in BaaS) but already there are tenders filed in China pricing LFP battery packs at $62/kWh ( or ₹5.3k/kWh)

Someone needs to take this up with IRDAI and set this straight.

Yes, the insurance premiums for the EV & battery specific coverages are pretty exorbitant and restrictive (first 3 years only from Iffco Tokio; others may be similar, or we can always switch).

I am in no way going to defend the insurance companies here (after all, I have to pay extra premium for my car), but this practice is not restricted to India.

As I understand, in an accident, ICE cars are more prone to mechanical damage, such as engine or transmission issues, while EVs face risks to their battery packs, motors, and high-voltage wiring. Repairs for ICE cars are typically straightforward and involve widely available parts, whereas EV repairs require specialized expertise and are costlier, especially if battery replacement is needed.

In natural calamities like floods, ICE cars are vulnerable to hydrostatic lock, where water enters the engine. Whereas EVs face potential short circuits or permanent damage to their batteries or motors. EV fires from battery failures burn hotter and are harder to extinguish compared to fuel-related fires in ICE cars - so, they are more likely to be declared a total loss (TL) in severe accidents/calamities.

It is these aspects that drive up the cost of insuring EV components separately as an add-on.

With improving technology, one can expect the cost of repairs and replacements to reduce over time, and insurers may be more willing to extend the cover to beyond first 3 years and also pricing may benefit from competitive under-cutting.

One can always hope
