Overall Electric Car Sales Trend

• Bumper sales for EVs in the month of October-24. Almost all manufacturers except Hyundai, Kia, Audi and Citroen had a bumper sales month. The EV sales grew by 74% MoM and 40% YoY.
• The EV sales crossed 10k+ for the first time in last two years

Sales Trend for Mass Market

• Tata had the 2nd best month of the year in terms of sales.
• MG had the best month till date. All thanks for Windsor. This shows all you need is the right product at the right price.
• Mahindra also had the best month till date. All thanks to heavy discounts on XUV400.

Sales Trend for Premium Market

• BYD has the best month till date. This is with Seal and Atto3 only. As eMax7 is just launched this number will increase further.
• BMW and Mercedes are killing it with their sales number. Such high number in luxury segment.
• Kia and Hyundai need to wake up their number are nothing to write home about.
• Volvo and Audi are struggling massively just 17 and 4 cars sold respectively when their rivals sold 289 cars combined.

The fact that Tata has sold more vehicles than the rest all combined, by a factor of third, is mind-boggling.

It's a great month for EVs. Hope Hyundai and Kia get into some action and bring the mass market products soon so that we can some competition going. I am eagerly awaiting Kia EV3.

Could the spike in sales be due to the introduction of new car models from various OEMs? We will see if the trend continues in the coming months. It’s great to see the uptick in EV sales. If it had been a bad month, I’m sure there would have been plenty of articles predicting the doom of EVs, but not this month.

Are there specific numbers on how many ZS and Windsors were registered? The numbers seem totally off from the dealer dispatches by a big factor.

The numbers are respectable for 50 lakh rupee EVs. Not sure if the EV6 numbers are with the reduced ex-showroom prices.

Since I hold some quantity of TM shares and which have been on a downward spiral for the past few months, I was keeping an eye on their sales figures. Specially after they introduced Diwali offers.

But if you check TM website for their sales numbers of EV, it shows a decline percentage of 2%.

So my question is the data captured by "Vahaan dashboard", for "vehicles dispatched" by OEM or "vehicles sold", because both doesn't seem to corelate.

VAHAN data corresponds to vehicles "registered" at RTO for that month, so it's the actual sold inventory. Hence the discrepancy observed.

Vahan Data is RTO office data. All RTO offices in each state except Telangana report the car registration data to central database. The database provides slicing and dicing based on maker, vehicle type and fuel type. The database doesn't let you drill down to model per manufacturer though the data will be there for sure.

This data is way different from dealer dispatches. Dealer dispatches are car sold by manufacturer to dealer. It doesn't matter if there was actual buyer or not. For MG, high windsor dispatches will include dealer demo and display vehicles

Conclusion - dealer dispatches are nothing but inventory added each month. Vahan Data is actual sales to the end customer. It is high time, we move off from dealer dispatches to actual retail sales.

Compare these numbers with BMW and Mercedes which are selling many more cars (i4, ix1, EQC, EQB etc.) with much higher price tag.
Conclusion - When somebody plonks 40L plus on a car. They look for the tag not for the technicalities and features. Hence high sales for BYD, Mercedes and BMW.

Almost all over the world, car manufacturers announce monthly sales based on the dispatch numbers only. Only Tesla counts the customer delivery as sale as they don't have dealership model.

Also, dealer dispatches are represent sales relatively more accurate than the registration numbers as registration numbers will be much more delayed compared to actual delivery of the vehicle in most cases. There may be cases where dealer dispatches to be slightly higher when a new model launches for a month but sooner than later, those will settle into actual numbers.

Indeed. As a Nexon EV Max owner, my loyalties are with TaMo. They deserve credit for single-handedly building out the EV market in India from scratch in just over 4 years.

The Windsor EV becoming the largest selling EV in its very first month shows a) this is not a ‘winner takes it all’ market yet, and b) there is enough headroom for more models to expand the EV pie without cannibalizing existing models.

In the end, the customer is the biggest winner here.

I don't follow sales dispatches for other parts of the world. But my brother in law works for a fortune 500 company which is into data analytics for cars. The big manufacturers like Honda, Ford, Nissan and many more pay them to get sales analytics by Manufacturer, Model, Region, Dealer and various other factors for North America. This helps them in driving sales strategy. They use data from car registries like carfax and more. In short, car sales data is highly reliable and relevant outside India as well.

Now for India, Vahan is a govt of india initiative and the data is getting pumped into it on a real time basis. When I got my car in 2023, I got a message from Vahaan the date I bought the car which means Vahan registered the vehicle sales on the same day of my buying the car. So there is no delay in getting the sales data into Vahan. It is closest that you can get actual on ground sales.

Hence one can take out Vahan data 2-3 days after the month end, you will get the exact sale data per manufacturer except Telangana (for whatever reason they are not on vahan). Telangana reports their sales data in an excel. Their data is by model by manufacturer by date.

Amazing data. So more than 15% of BMW and Mercedes’s sales are EVs. BYD is doing very well - despite them losing 2-3 customers for every person who buys because of uncertainty on whether they will be allowed to continue in India. JSW’s taking a majority stake in MG has probably contributed as much to MG’s sales growth as the launch of the Windsor. As a Ioniq 5 owner, am of course concerned at the drop in sales for Hyundai and Kia. For me, the Ioniq is a fantastic and well priced product - am shocked they have not been able to sustain 150-200 units of sales.

Well fantastic car no doubt but is beyond the reach of most Indians (it is definitely beyond my reach). I am not sure why Hyundai is not targeting the lower segment. They brought the Kona and then just disappeared after that.

Problem in India is EVs per se don't sell in and that is why Tata Motors doesn't feel it feasibile to get Gen 3 EVs or Skateboard platform cars to the market. Only if they are able to sell 70% of theirs EVs abroad will it be feasible for them. Mahindra success with their Skateboard EVs too hinges on exports. The Gen 2 EVs that are on EV platforms (eg. Acti.ev or XUV 300 platform) that share the upper body with ICE vehicles only are feasible in the current scenario. Windsor sells worldwide under different brand names and hence will workout in India too. Mahindra and Tata too need to do the same to have economies of scale. Else the project will not workout.

Telangana data is more of excel data with single row for each car sold. You can do much deeper analysis into the sales.

Some interesting observations
1. It was bumper month for EVs in Telangana as well 675 EVs sold. 331 Tata EVs, 234 MG EVs and 110 Other EVs were sold
2. 117 MG Windsors and 77 Tata Curvv.EV were sold
3. Out of 117 MG Windsors, 3 were Excite and 16 were Exclusive. Rest all were Essence variant
4. Out of 77 Tata Curvv.EVs, 43 were top variant Empowered+A and 14 were Empowered+ variant. Only 5 out of 77 were 45KW variant.
5. Hyundai and Kia sold 0 cars in October 24 where BMW, Mercedes and BYD sold 62 cars
